Then one evening, he went into the bar and saw a man playing chess at a table, but he could not see anyone in the chair opposite him. He went nearer to look and was very surprised to see that the man was playing against his dog. When it had to move one of these chess pieces, it stood on its back legs on the chair. Fred watched while the two played the game. When the dog lost, Fred went up to the owner and said:“Ive never seen such a clever dog before.” “Well” answered the other man. He isnt really very clever. I always win.11. Where did Fred sometimes go after work?12. Who won the game?Section C You may have heard that Americans like hot dogs and hamburgers best of all foods. Well, farmers and owners of public eating places might happily agree. So might the nations Meat Institute and the National Hot Dog & Sausage Council. But people whose favorite are pizza and apple pie would give the meat-lovers a spirited argument! Naming the favorite foods of Americans depends a lot on whom you ask. But one thing is sure. The ancestors of most Americans came from other countries. The United States owes many favorite dishes, or the ideas for these foods, to the rest of the world. For example, that traditional American favorite, the hot dog, had its modern beginning in Germany. The National Hot Dog and Sausage Council estimates that Americans eat about seven thousand million of these sausage during a summer. Americans also eat lots of hamburgers. This ground meat comes from beef. It can be cooked in many ways. Like hot dog, hamburgers are a favorite picnic food. Many public eating places in the United States say hamburgers are their most popular foods.SCET-2綜合訓練(下冊)(2)Part I: Listening Comprehension 15%1-5 ABCAC 6-10ABADC 11-12CB 13. discuss 14. appear 15. effects 16. harmful 17. chemicals 18. pressure附:聽力文本Section A 1. Millions of people ride boats, fish and water ski. Swimming of course is the most popular water sport. Most neighborhoods have a public pool in addition to nearby lakes. So people dont have to travel far to enjoy the water. The sandy beaches of Hawaii, Florida and California are crowded year round with swimmers. On windy days, some people like to ride in sail boats. In large sail boats or small sail boats, people often race against each other or they just sail alone to enjoy a pleasant day on the lake. Some people especially enjoy surfing. When surfing, a person stands on a flat piece of wood called surf board and rides the waves into the shore. This exciting sport can only be done on oceans and south California beaches have become popular surfing places.11. What do people especially like to do on warm days?12. An advisory committee of the United States Food and Drug Administration will meet in October to discuss this issue. Some doctors say and cold products do not work in children, and they worry about possible risks F.D.A. officials say that some reports of problems appear to be the result of giving too much medicine to children. This may lead to serious and life-threatening side effects, especially in children age two and younger. The products are sold without the need for a doctors approval. Yet cough and cold medicines can be harmful if people take them more often or in greater amounts than they should. There is a risk, for example, in taking more than one product containing the same active chemicals. Too much cold medicine may affect the heart. Some medicines have also been linked to high blood pressure and strokes. Products for children may contain medicines that were approved many years ago based on studies in adults. The drug approval process has changed since them.SCET-2綜合訓練(下冊)(3)Part I: Listening Comprehension 15%1-5 BDCDA 6-10 CBDCB 1l-12 DB13. spread 14. ties 15. separately 16. physical 17. hundred 18. consider附:聽力文本Section A1. After one year, the young man was promoted above George, George was angry. So he went to see his manager and said: “ I have 16 years experience on this job, yet a young man has been promoted over my head after he had been here only one year!” “ Im sorry, George.” Answered the manager patiently, “ but you havent had 16 year experience. Section CResearchers say they have found that fatness can spread from person to person in social groups. When one person gains weight, close friends often gain weight, too. As a result, the researchers were able to examine more than forty thousand social ties. The study found that the sex of friends is also an influence. In same-sex friendships, a person has a seventy-one percent increased risk of getting fat. The same was true for brothers and sisters separately. A man has a forty-four percent increased risk is sixty-seven percent. The study also showed that physical closeness of family members and friends did little to increase a persons risk. A friend who lives a few hundred kilometers away has as much influence as one in your neighborhood. The study demonstrates the need to consider that a major part of a persons health id tied to his or her social connections.SCET-2綜合訓練(下冊)(4)Part I: Listening Comprehension 15%1-5 ACDDC 6-10ABBCA 11-12DB13. Why such a long break? Because long ago, young people had to help their families harvest the summer crops. At least this is what people today may think. The reason has more to it. In the early days of the United States, children were not required by law to attend school. School calendars depended on local needs. Students in rural areas went to school for no more than six months of the year-half in the summer and half in the winter. They worked on family farms during the other months. City schools were open much longer, some for eleven months of the year. National leaders took a fresh look at schools after the Civil War, in the 1860s. They saw a free public education as a way to help support a strong democracy and prepare workers for new industries. Some experts think the traditional school calendar needs to change because the needs of the nation have changed. This thinking has led some schools to keep students in class longer.SCET-2綜合訓練(下冊)(5)Part I: Listening Comprehension 15%1-5 CBBDA 6-10 ACAAD 11-12 CD13. medical 14. deadliest 15. desert 16. severe 17. present 18. defenses附:聽力文本Section A 1.
