It bothered James at first, but she seemed almost proud of it: she would refuse to use her five-fingered hand to hold him or move stray hairs from her eyes. 2、ng of their relationship. After six months the missing digit became something like a comfort to Jameshed notice its absence in his hand and feel loved. It was something he couldnt explain to anyone else, and that made him love the missing finger even more. It was a secret between them both. There wa
3、s, however, a certain thing James couldnt ask about. He wasnt sure how she lost her finger. It was the only unspeakable topic in the relationship. It didnt bother him very much. He wasnt a curious person. Hed occasionally slip and begin to ask, but mostly caught himself. When he didnt, shed get quie
4、t in company or angry in private. Hed let her storm away and wait for the broken comb of her hand to run through his hair in apology. They broke up over a mistake. His mistake. Amy started an argument over who should do the dishes, and he lost despite his best effort to point out the number of hours
5、 he worked. In his anger, he stabbed a fork into the wall. Amy didnt say anything; she didnt even look upset, just confused. When he pulled the fork out, two prongs(叉齒)stayed in the wall, so he threw it into the trash. She was still staring, and he felt awkward and ashamed. He told her the prongs we
6、re in the wall, and the fork was now useless. What good would a two-pronged fork be for anyone? There wasnt any talking after that. She simply packed a backpack and went to her mothers. The next day Amys brother and father came by to collect the rest of her clothing and books. Neither of them looked
7、 mad, though James couldnt figure out if they were truly uninterested or if silent anger was a family characteristic. He painted over the marks on the kitchen wall a week later, but left the prongs in the wall. He fished the fork out of the trash and kept it in the silverware drawer, underneath the
8、utensil tray. Hed take it out occasionally. Unlike typical book clubs, the point of the slow reading club isnt to exchange ideas about certain books, but to get away from electronic devices and read in a quiet, relaxed environment. Accor
16、ding to the story, the Wellington book club is just one example of a movement started by book lovers who miss the traditional way of reading. Traditional readers, like Maura Kelly, say a regular reading habit sharpens the mind, improves concentration, reduces stress levels and deepens the ability to
17、 understand others. Some of these benefits have been backed up by science. For example, a study of 300 elderly people published by the journal Neurology last year showed that mature people who take part in activities that use their brain, such as reading, suffer less memory loss as they get older. 18、nother study published last year in Science showed that reading novels helps people understand others mental states and beliefsa key skill in building relationships. Yet technology has made us less careful readers. Computer and phone screens have changed our reading patterns from the top-to-bottom,
19、left-to-right reading order we traditionally used, to a wild skimming and skipping pattern as we hunt for important words and information. Reading text online that has many links to other web pages also leads to weaker comprehension than reading plain text. The Internet may have made us stupider, sa

Ive often taken note of them, and here are the top five most easy-to-do actions that can be applied to any goal or commitment you have. I find t
31、hese especially helpful as we begin a fresh new year of goals. 1. GET EARLY WINSYou cannot underestimate how much this fuels your commitment. Define what “early wins” look like and make sure that theyre in your control. For example, if you said, “exercise four times weekly”, thats in your hands, so
32、make sure you meet or exceed this number consistently. It fuels you to continue. 2. TRACK POSITIVE PROGRESSIts important to know what youve accomplished. Mostly we focus on what ISNT happening. This is bringing down your energy level and mood. Keep a notebook or journal(digitally or paper)of what is
33、 getting done so you can visibly see progress. If you have several goals, keep different journals. 3. COMMIT TO OTHERSThe more you share your goals with others, the more you become responsible for taking action. Take it a step further and enlist someone you will “report” to and share your progress.
34、Make sure this person push you and not let you off the hook. 4. MAKE MISTAKES AND MOVE ONYou wont be perfect. When youre not, declare, embrace and own it, then move on fast. Recommit and get right back in the game. Also, disable your rearview mirrors. What happened before doesnt have to influence wh
35、at happens next. 5. DEFINE YOUR OWN SUCCESSThere is no “right” way to get to your goal. Its yours and youre the author. Clearly map out the route to the top with milestones and what success looks like. The clearer you are on not only the “what” but the “how”, the easier it will be to take action. Th
36、e goals you create are hugely important, but in fact the most exciting part is the self-discovery in the process of getting there.
