文檔簡介

、Ziyun Is Gone By Wang MengI met Li Ziyun in Shanghai on two consecutive days, May 21st and the 22nd. She looked fine, but very weak, leaning against An Yi as she moved, and talked much less than usual.Contrary to expectations, she died, on June 10, which was so sudden and had nearly no sign. She was

、talkative. Every time we met in Beijing, we used to talk more than 4 or 5 hours. We exchanged opinions on literature, on the writers and works, and on Writers Association and Federation of Literature, when she made a great show of her talents. No matter what the public criticism was tend to be, no ma

、tter what status the author was in, she would stick to her own view. To her, good is good, and bad is bad, including my works. One of her disfavors is flaunting my writing techniques, which makes a lot of variety but cannot touch her heart. And the other one is my soaped-pig fashion, such as if I wa

、nt to display warmness and harmony, but actually I say “the fall is so cold” instead. Also, we couldnt see eye to eye about several views. For example, she didnt appreciate popular literature, while I thought that should be inclusive. We hit it off well, but always disagree with each other. On the wh

、ole, neither of us has convinced each other, but has interacted on each other. The first time I saw her was at the fourth session of Cultural Representative Congress. In her talk the issue of literature and arts in Shanghai was raised. She had edited the magazine Shanghai Literature, where she publis

、hed a long article, questioning the view that literature serves the politics. She was unpopular among some people, but also supported by some people. She used to work for Comrade Xia Yan, and from her we can see how clear and lofty Comrade Xia Yan was.Could everything in the world be so clear? Until

、 1979, until which I had been a Party member for 30 years, I finally came back after being expelled from the Party for 22 years. Everything then seemed so promising, but I was still under the shadow of “Where ignorance is bliss, its folly to be wise”, although fostering a radiant hope. I even though

、t that ZiYun neednt to be so serious-why not adjust herself to the situation? Literary! Literary!-no need to dispute for it-dispute will eventually die, while works-good works will live forever. Especially when disagreeing with your immediate superior, how can you reconcile yourself to the disagreea

、ble state? But her distinct personality and literary conscience have left a deep impression on me. To her, literature and conscience were a whole- no conscience, no literature. She requested literature to be profound and moving; she requested literary conception to face up the reality of life; she r

、equested literary thought to touch the truth and soul and show true feelings; she requested literary style to be precise and polished. She disbelieved in and hated hype, relationships, promotions and public relations; she has never been bluffed by boast and trend. As work is stupid. With just one sen

、tence, she hit the nail on the head, although people in general thought that As work was written with genuine. It extolled B sky-high. She said that, despite the “sky-high” had actually been accepted by many which had become a common sense. She totally ignored other peoples flattery. A has always fa

、ncied getting a name, but he often showed signs. She said. I even thought that she is too penetrating. When talking about our lovely fellows, she shook her head and felt disappointed about their inappropriate and abject manner and words. Could we keep silence? E.g. when you see filth in the street,

、should you point it out or just turn away? She was not tolerant to improper words. She was shocked that how could Cs words like a hooligans; how could Ds tone like a prostitutes; how could E like a damn bureaucrat.Did she fail to understand our living environment? Did she really believe that theres a

、n ivory tower standing in literature? Why didnt she write all these down? Of course, she had written a lot of criticisms and comments, aggressive and sharp-minded, arousing considerable complaint from the writers criticized. But she wrote no more. I feel sorry for her. What was to be afraid of? Isnt

、it a pity that one who is been in the literary criticism all the life hasnt offended any writers, even some laughing stocks?Despite that, listen to her talking about that was also very interesting, and sometimes joyful. She mimicked those literary leaders voice and gestures perfectly, and criticized

、 them penetratingly. No wonder she was imputed to for the defying words of Feng Jicais, Liu Xinyus and mine during the Criticism of Modernism in1983. Almost every mishap was transferred to Li Ziyun because she was believed to be the cause that Modernism was supported in Shanghai. Mr.Xia and Mr.Ba ha

、d both said something displeasing. But those self-proclaimed leaders imputed it to Ziyun, and were busy with removing her from the circle of literature. I was surprised that the circle of literature should be that charming. For those “after 80s” or “after 90s”, it is hard to imagine the pomp of the

、literature struggles-or, I should say, of deception, ostentation and bluff, and finally turning out to be nothing left.Although she had been a frequent target, and although she had suffered ups and downs, still she was impervious to criticism and went her own way. She lived in an average-size old ro

、om in a lane on Huaihai road for 30 years on end, with an old nanny, whose later life was spent there. While in the meantime, others, including myself, had moved house heaps of times, with living space expanded greatly, and some even 10 times larger. She has never talked anything about her living co

、nditions and material benefits - to be frank, I have never asked either. While another writer, who had only just published his first article, demanded better treatment, which just made me curl up. How could these literature workers be so different: some were as vulgar as the maggot, while others wer

、e as lofty as cold breeze? So were Xiayan, Zhang Guangnian, and Lin Mohan. What they talked about was only literature and politics, never about personal gain or loss, whether of themselves or others. What they are proud of are their thoughts, which you can never change. Ziyun was a heavyweight in cr

、iticism circle. I know that some writers had made great efforts to win the favor of Ziyun, but failed. Could there still be such a critic as stubborn-or, as upright, selfless, and somewhat pedantic as her? Could it be possible that such critic like Li Ziyun is dying out?She used to lavishly praise F

、eng Zongpu, one of the writers she relatively appreciated. She described Zongpu like this: as noble as orchid, as virtuous as jade. She said she found part of herself in Zongpu. However, Li Ziyun was more than a scholar. She was not a pedant, far from a pedant. If you shanghai, and had Ziyun arrange

、things for you, you must enjoy yourself very much. Where to live, where to eat, where to walk, where to talk, where to shop and what to buy? Her proposal was always the best answer.Sometimes, she was a little delicate. She never requested luxury, but could not bear a little discomfort would. When in Beijing, she preferred our home-made dumplings. If she found any squalor when eating out, she would refuse to eat. Another time, she went somewhere for a meeting. Upon arriving, she felt uncomfortable and then went immediately back to Sha
