2、oductionByinterpretinghowlanguage,identity,andcultureareinterconnectedwitheachother,StuartHall1997a,1997b,1997cstatesthatthroughrepresentationsystem,language,identity,andcultureareintertwined.Withthisnotioninmind,thispaperwillfirstlysummarizeHallsargumentsindiscussingtheinterrelationshipbetweenlangu

3、age,identity,andcultureinthreeperspectives:languageandculture,identityandculture,aswellaslanguageandidentity.ThenitwilldescribesomeepisodesfromthepersonalexperiencedrawnfromChineseculture,whichwillintroduceanddiscussthedistinctivelanguageofinterpersonalrelationshipsinChina.SummaryofStuartHallsnotion

4、AccordingtoStuartHalls1997btheory,insteadofexistingindependentlyandseparately,thereisacomplexinterrelationshipoflanguage,identity,andculturaldifference.Intermsoftherelationshipbetweenlanguageandculturedifference,language,asatool,aprivilegedmedium,asymbol,embodies,expresses,andsymbolizescultureKramsc

5、h,1998.Inturn,languagesaredistinguishedbecauseofculturaldifferences.Inaddition,owingtoculturecanberepresentedindifferentwaysthroughlanguage,thuswehavetheculturaldifference.Obviously,culturedifferenceswillproducedifferentlanguages.Identityisaproductofculturesinceculturemeaninginvolvesconcepts,ideas,e

6、motionsandsenseofbelonging.Toillustrate,InHalls“culturalidentityanddiaspora1997a,itindicatesthatculturalidentityisaboutsharedculture,whichmeanspeoplebelieveinacommonhistoryandancestryp.51.Therefore,withthesameunderstanding,experience,andbeliefs,individualswhosharethesameculturewillbuildupacommonsens

7、eofidentity.Asfortheinterconnectionbetweenlanguageandidentity,identityinfluenceslanguage.Asismentionedabove,peoplewhohavethesameidentityhaveasimilarwaytointerprettheworld.Besides,peopleregardtheirlanguageasapartoftheirsocialidentitysincelanguageisasymbolizedsystemKramsch,1998,p.3.Thus,theymustsharet

8、hesame“culturalcodestocommunicate,whichreferstothebroadsenseoflanguage,includingthevarioussignsandsymbolsHall,1997b,p.4.Therefore,identityshapesthewayofusinglanguage.DiscussthelanguageofinterpersonalrelationshipsinChinaThelanguageofinterpersonalrelationshipsisasetofspecificlanguage,whichisinfluenced

9、byidentityandculturedifference,inordertodescribetherelationshipsbetweenindividuals.DrawnfromChineseculture,thelanguageofinterpersonalrelationshipsinChinaisatypicalphenomenontointerpretandanalyzethecomplexinterrelationshipbetweenlanguage,identity,andculturedifferent.Thispartwillargueanddiscusstheinte

10、ractionandrelationshipbetweenthelanguageofinterpersonalrelationships,Chineseculture,andidentityoftheyounggenerationwhichgenerallyreferstopeoplewhowerebornaftertheyear1980.Firstly,thelanguageofinterpersonalrelationshipsreflectsChineseculture.There,itwilltakethelanguageofkinshipasanexampletoillustrate

11、.KinshipisakindofimportantinterpersonalrelationshipsinChina.Unlikemostwesterncountries,fordifferentkinsfolkinChina,thelanguagewillbeuseddifferentlytorepresentthepositioninthefamily.Toillustratethisspecialphenomenon,ononehand,collectivismoccupiesanimportantpositioninChineseculture,whichpromotesincorp

12、orationYao,Wang,TangWang,2020.Ontheotherhand,Chineseculturehasagreatinfluenceonlanguage,whichcontainsspokenlanguage,writtenlanguage,clothes,gesturesandotheraspectsintermsofabroadsense.Sincelanguageplaysaroleasamediumandarepository,thenorms,values,customsandbeliefsofaculturecanbetransmitted.Thereisaf

13、amousoldsayingthatis“Expandtherespectoftheagedtothatofotherfamilies.ItshowsthatrespecttheagedisthetraditionalvirtueoftheChinesenation.WiththismajorculturalvalueandcustombasedonConfucianism,peoplewhoareolder,moreseniororwithahighersocialstatuswillbeaddressedwithhonorifictitlesinChinesesociety.Forexam

14、ple,therearetwowaysofsaying“youinChinese.Secondly,withrespecttotherelationshipbetweenthelanguageofinterpersonalrelationshipsandidentityoftheyounggeneration,itclaimsthatidentityruleslanguageusage.Meanwhile,identitycanbereflectedbylanguage.TherelationshipbetweenteachersandstudentsinChinaisanothertypic

15、alphenomenontoillustratetheinteractionbetweenlanguageandidentity.AccordingtothefourthandfifthprinciplesofRegulationsforprimaryandmiddleschoolstudentsthatissuedbyMinistryofEducation2020,itemphasizesthatstudents,astheyounggeneration,shouldbemodestandpolitetotheirteachersinschools.However,cultureidenti

16、tyisnotfixedalongwiththechangesofusinglanguage.AsHall1997bclaimsthatthingshavenomeaningoriginally.Itistheparticipantsempowerthepeople,objects,andeventstohavemeaningsinculturalpractices.Thus,withthechangeofparticipants,thingswillhavenosingleandfixedmeaning.Owingtothatpeopleusedtocallpeoplesnamesdirec

17、tlyinEnglish,studentswilladdresstheirEnglish-native-speakerteacherswiththeirgivennames.Inthisprocess,studentsacquireanotheridentitybyunderstandingthedifferencebetweenEnglishandChinese.Thirdly,intermsoftherelationshipbetweenidentityandculture,itstatesthatidentityandcultureareintertwinedwitheachother.

18、Ononehand,identityisproducedintheprocessofmeaninggivingandmeaningtaking,sothatculturedifferencesproducedifferentidentitiesHall,1997c.basedonthesevalues,theoldgenerationislabeledastraditional,rigid,stereotypical,andconservative.Comparatively,grownupinamultiple-culturalenvironment,theyounggenerationsv

19、aluesareconstitutedbothfromvariousnationalitiesofChinaandfromdifferentcountries.Therefore,theypursuesmoreequal,fairandunrestrainedinterpersonalrelationships.Influencedbythecontemporaryculture,theyounggenerationpromotesthefreedomofspeech,thefreedomofmarriage,andtheequalityofsocialrelationshipandsex.T

20、hedifferencesbetweentheidentityoftheyounggenerationandtheoldgenerationaremarkedoutbydistinctivecharacteristicsandsharedculturalbeliefs.Inturn,differentidentitiesrevealculturedifferences.AsHall1997b,1997csuggest,cultureisnotonlyaboutthesimilarity,moreimportantly,aboutthedifference.Theessenceofgeneral

21、Chineseculturewillbeinheritedandacceptwithmajorities.However,themainstreamideologywillbeselecedandcreatedfromgenerationtogeneration.Astheyounggenerationisthemajorlaborofacountry,themainstreamculturewillbeinfluencedandchangebytheirideology.Specifically,asafamousquotesays“onceateacher,alwaysateacher,teacherswereusedtobeseenastheonlyauthorityofknowledge.Studentswerenotallowedtodoubtteacherssayings,evennotallowedtoaskquestionstotheirteachers.Therefore,traditionalChine
