Silk is one of the oldest textile fiber known to

12、human. It has been used by Chinese since the 27th century BC. Silk is mentioned by Aristotle and became a valuable commodity both in Greece and Rome. During the Roman Empire,silk was sold for its weight in gold.Today,silk is yet another word for elegance,and silk garments are prized for their versat

13、ility,wearability and comfort. Silk,or soie in French,is the strongest natural fibre. Silk absorbs moisture,which makes it cool in the summer and warm in the winter. Because of its high absorbency,it is easily dyed in many deep colors. Silk retains its shape,drapes well,caresses the figure,and shimm

14、ers with a luster all its own.Contemporary silk garments range from evening dress to sports wear. A silk suit can go to the office and,with a change of accessories and a blouse,transform into an elegant dinner ensemble.silk garments can be worn for all seasons.Silk,elegant,versatile and washable. In

15、 the past,owning a silk garment meant not only the initial price of the garment but also the cost of dry cleaning.All silk is washable. Silk is a natural protein fiber,like human hair,taken from the cocoon of the silkworm. Most silk fabric can be hand washed.technically,silk doesnt shrink like other

16、 fibers. If the fabric is not tightly woven,washing a silk will tighten up the weave. Thus lighter weights of silk can be improved by washing as it will tighten up the weave. A tightly woven silk will not shrink or will shrink a lot less. Silk garments,however, can shrink if the fabric has not been

17、washed prior to garment construction. When washing silk,dont wring but roll in a towel. Silk dries quickly but shall not be put in an automatic dryer unless the fabric is dried prior to garment construction. A good shampoo works well on silk. It will remove oil and revitalize your silk. Dont use an

18、alkaline shampoo or one which contains ingredients such as wax,petroleum,or their derivatives,as these products will leave a residue on your silk and may cause oil spots. If static or clinging is a problem with your silks,a good hair conditioner may be used in the rinse water.Silk may yellow and fad

19、e with the use of a high iron setting.press clothes and a steam iron are recommended. Silk is also weakened by sunlight and perspiration. 20、pearing with increased frequency in the labeling of sweaters and some linen-look textiles. It is a plant fiber that has been used since ancient times. It is also known as China grass.Interest in ramie articles in the U.S market resulted in increased trade with China and importers taking advantage of

21、 a loop-hole in the U.S. Trade laws. These laws limited the import of wool,cotton and man-made fiber textiles but didnt limit the import of silk,ramie and other minor natural fiber products. Import quota regulations now include ramie and should create a leveling off of imported articles made from th

22、is fiber. China and Korea are considered the leading producers of ramie but Brazil ,the Philippines and some Indonesian countries are also important producers.Ramie is one of the strongest natural fibers and exhibits even greater strength when wet. It possesses little elasticity and is somewhat brit

23、tle and stiff. This causes fiber breakage and abrasion where creased or folded repeatedly. To reduce possible damage,avoid ironing sharp creases in fabrics such as napkins or skirt pleats.The long fine ramie fibers are naturally white and lustrous with an almost silk appearance. It is a cellulosic s

24、ubstance as is cotton,linen and other plant fibers. The unevenness of fiber ha s strong resemblance to the thick and thin appearance of linen but at a reduced cost. In addition,it is softer with better dye ability.Like linen and cotton,ramie has poor resiliency and wrinkles easily. Application of wr

25、inkle-resistant finishes or blending with synthetic fibers can reduce the problem in woven fabrics. Because of its high absorbency,ramie is comfortable to wear,especially during warm weather. Other properties include resistance to alkalis,rotting,light and mildew.The fiber has some natural stain res

26、isting ability with ease of stain removal similar to that of linen,which is better than cotton. Dyes appear to have good wet-fastness in laundering but there can be a tendency for crocking in dark or saturated colors. Dark colors may lose their vibrancy over repeated launderings.Some variation exist

27、s in the appearance of fabrics containing ramie.
