5、, as the color is a true reflection of the objective things, its semantic meaning surface in the English language and the Chinese language is consistent. Nevertheless, due to differences in history and culture, ethnic customs, religious beliefs, regional environment and so on, English and Chinese ha

6、ve different meanings in the same color. Sapir has said that language is a view of world, it reflects the influence different peoples values. The color of yellow is frequently used in both the English language and the Chinese language. This thesis aims at collecting words from the authoritative dict

7、ionary of Chinese and English and Oxford English Dictionary, finding the differences and reasons, and making comparative analysis of different thinking characteristics of the English and Chinese people. It can help students understand the conceptual meaning of words, especially cultural connotation

8、meaning, eliminating the interference of mother tongue and culture in the teaching of words or teaching Chinese as a foreign language. Its good for students to comprehend the meaning of words, enhancing the awareness and ability of intercultural communication, which has certain practical significanc

9、e. In theory, its beneficial to know the deep differences between Chinese and English culture, making progress in teaching and scientific research level.Key words: color word; culture; language; differences摘 要英語和漢語中都有許多表示顏色的詞語,由于顏色詞是對(duì)客觀事物的真實(shí)反映,其語義表層意義在英漢兩種語言中具有一致性。由于英漢民族在歷史文化、民族習(xí)慣、宗教信仰、地域環(huán)境等諸多方面存在差異

10、,因此,在英漢兩種文化中同一顏色所包含的意義有所不同。薩丕爾曾說:“語言是一種世界觀,它反映、影響著不同民族的價(jià)值觀念”。顏色詞“黃”在英漢兩種語言中是使用頻率較高,本文分別通過漢語和英語的權(quán)威詞典漢語大詞典和牛津英語詞典( Oxford English Dictionary ) 的詞條收集,從顏色詞所蘊(yùn)含的文化內(nèi)涵意義入手,通過歸納、分析、比較的方法,研究黃色在英漢語言在文化語義上的褒貶差異和聯(lián)想意義,發(fā)現(xiàn)不同及原因,進(jìn)一步對(duì)比分析英漢民族不同的思維特征。在詞語教學(xué)或?qū)ν鉂h語教學(xué)中有助于學(xué)生了解詞語的概念意義,尤其是文化內(nèi)涵意義,使學(xué)生在外語學(xué)習(xí)過程中排除學(xué)生母語語言和文化的干擾;在翻譯中更

16、nce. When People think of color with emotional changes, the color word has a sense of value and transfers rich cultural connotations. However, due to geographical location, history and culture, ethnic customs, religious beliefs, different ways of thinking, about same color words, English and Chinese

17、 different cultures have different emotional meanings. 1.1 Semantic Notion of Color Language is a tool for human communication, which is a prominent part of culture. At the same time, its reflected in specific cultural content, if you do not understand the cultural factors of a language, communicati

18、on cant be carried out easily; therefore, people cannot communicate with each other without language knowledge and culture. Vocabulary is the accumulation of culture, the most obvious bearing the cultural information. It is a reflection of peoples social tools that can give birth to rich cultural co

19、nnotations. The cultural connotations of color words are a part of language and words are multi-layered. In cross-cultural communication, cultural connotations have different emotional meanings, reflecting deep-seated values and cultural psychology. Only in combination with specific cultural backgro

20、und knowledge and communicative environment, we can understand the deep connotation of color words, in order to avoid communicative errors.Domestic scholars have made a series of studies about the color, but most of them focus on a variety of colors to study the symbolic meaning of color words. In t

21、his thesis, I will discuss the differences in the cultural semantics of English and Chinese, and the associative meaning through analysis and comparison, making a comparative analysis of the characteristics about different ways of thinking between English and Chinese.1.2 Purpose This thesis aims to

22、analyze the color of “Yellow” differences about language vocabulary and cultural connotations in English and Chinese through induction and comparison. To explore the deep meaning of color word under the different cultural backgrounds, offering help for education and learn between students and teache

23、rs to understand the meaning of color words.Color words are closely related to social life. They are unique, important and contain rich cultural information. The color of yellow has a wide range in Chinese. Chinese is an isolated language. There is no such thing as English, time, body, state, nature

24、, number, and lattice, but English does not have so many words about yellow . In addition to the different forms of expression, the most important thing is the color words are embodied with the values and cultural psychology. This study found that foreign students will face the dilemma of how to com

25、municate: different languages and cultures. It can be found that in the textbooks of teaching Chinese as a foreign language, some words are not well explained and interpreted so as to provide comprehensive and accurate linguistic conceptual meaning to foreign students. The main problem is that no sp

26、ecific cultural connotations are chosen for proper translation or accurate interpretation. The important task of TCFL is to help students understand the meaning of words in concrete context and to use knowledge in language. In addition, the study of the cultural meaning about words and their differe

27、nces in the pragmatic differences, teaching students to eliminate the negative impacts.1.3 Basic Color In the human language, there are a large number of symbols and color words are used to record colors. These represent the physical attributes of the word are often used in the language, so that it

28、has a rich cultural connotation and extended meaning. Color words in language and words, not only its cultural connotation of emotional significance is multi-level, but also in cross-cultural communication, cultural connotation of meaning. The pragmatic meaning of color words in English and Chinese

29、is sometimes in two different languages can be equivalent, sometimes there is a pragmatic conflict or cultural gap. Colors are abundant in both Chinese and English, different people have different understandings about colors because of cultural diversity. Different people have different feelings abo

30、ut colors, but there are the same basic color words between Chinese and English. Such as, black ,white, red ,yellow, green,blue,purple,grey,brown. Basic color words are often closely related to the culture of various nationalities, but also reflect the culture of various people. Color is closely rel

31、ated with human life. Human perception of color has obvious similarities. Reflected in language, that is, although the various languages have different colors of vocabulary, the basic vocabulary to express color, such as, black, white, red, yellow, green, blue and so on. Color words in the language

This paper tries to reveal different thinking characteristics of English and Chinese from the perspective of

34、yellow and its cultural connotation.Literature ReviewIn English and Chinese, the expressions of color words are very rich. We must not only know the basic meaning of their own, but also to understand the meaning of its profound symbolic meaning, because symbolic meanings of color in different langua

35、ges have different characteristics, same color words in the English and Chinese culture have different emotional significance, showing the different characteristics of thinking. 2.1 Abroad StudyIn international studies, English linguist Gladstone was the first man to raise and discuss the problem of

36、 color word. In his study of Homeric and Homeric Era (1858), he compared the words in the Iliad and the Odyssey to the description of color words, pointing out that only a few ancient Hellenic Greek Abstract color words with the ambiguity. In the late nineteenth Century, its the first time that the

37、German ophthalmologist Magnus made anthropology of cross-cultural comparison of color code research, and the culture of the developed indigenous people to distinguish color experiment, which published “on primitive national color of the survey.” In the first half of the 20th century, Sapir and Wolf

42、aning of color words from sociolinguistics and applied linguistics, but they are all comprehensive researches, donmake a study deeply on a color word. Accordingly, this thesis attempts to study the characteristics about thinking between the English and Chinese people from the cultural connotation me

43、aning of “yellow”.This thesis aims to make an analysis of the color word “Yellow” differences between language vocabulary and cultural connotation in English and Chinese through induction, analysis and comparison. Besides, in order to explore the deep meaning of color word under different cultural b

44、ackgrounds, and to offer help in education and study between teachers and students. As for the signification, this thesis is to study the color words expressions and usages in English and Chinese, its beneficial for people to promote the cultural transmission and communication, having an effective i

45、ntercultural communication.3. Contrastive Analysis of Yellow in Chinese and English Culture3.1 Analysis of Yellow in Chinese CultureIn Chinese, yellow is a symbol of the Chinese nation. Yellow in the feudal society is the legal dignity of color, in ancient China it is regarded as the imperial power,

46、 so the ancient Chinese emperors wear the yellow robe, but prohibit the ordinary people wear yellow clothes. Imperial palace is also used to live with glazed tiles, the palace of the throne and all the decorations is yellow, the car chariot is also yellow, yellow became the emperors special color. “

47、Yellow robe plus body” refers to the emperor, the ordinary people are not dyed yellow. Additionally, as a farming nation, the Chinese people is full of infinite gratitude and worship of the yellow land, yellow is also considered to refer to the nations human ancestor Xuanyuan emperor, the Yellow Emp

48、eror, is a symbol of ancient China. Lucky days, the people in the ancient times believed that the sun runs around the earth. It means a propitious date, which is a day suitable for

People call the most precious time as the youth of ones life; Golden age, it means the most valuable period in ones life.In Chinese traditional culture, color of yellow has been used to symbolize imperial power. Its the specific

53、 color which just can be used by the emperors. There are many phrases with yellow to symbolize the emperor. Cloth worn by the emperor is Huangpao.Yellow is the topmost color which is seen as Chinese original color. Born with yellow skin, cultivated in the yellow soil, and taking the yellow River as

54、their place of origin, the Chinese people take pride in their identities. Call them proudly as YanHuangZiSun, which means the descendants of the Chinese who are skinned yellow.3.2 Analysis of Yellow in English CultureAs the color of gold and sun, yellow is the symbol of power, honor and wealth. Its

55、a holy color in Christianity. The holy cup used by Jesus in his last supper is also yellow. In English, there is a phrase “a yellow ribbon”, according to Wikipedia, it is a symbol with various meanings, mostly associated with those waiting for the return of a loved one or of military troops who cann

Recently, it has been used to symbolize support for the International Suicide Prevention Program and to raise awareness of Testicular Cancer, Endometriosis, and Madeleine McCann.“A yellow-colored” car is used in sports, shown to a player, as caution that he has committed a fl
