thefactthatiliketolookintothemirrorhastodowithmygrannywithwhomispentmostofmychildhood.irememberclearlythatonenightiheardhermurmuring,"womencan'tbeseen.womencan'tbeseen."iwassoconfusedastolookintothemirrorthenextmorningtocheckificouldindeedseemyself.onlynowasayoungwomanmyself,caniunderstandthatitwasnotphysicalvisibilitythatgrannyhadonhermind.

grannyspentallherlifetakingcareofthefamily,dayinanddayout.shecookedforherhusbandand10children.butwheneverguestscame,sheandotherfemalefamilymembershadtoeatbythestoveinthesmallkitchen.atfamilydiscussions,shewasneveraskedforheropinion.aftergrandpapassedaway,shehadtolistentomyuncle,hereldestson,fulfilledherdutyasdaughter,wife,andmother;yetasaperson,sheremainedlittlenoticed.eventhoughshecouldseeherselfinthemirrorofthedressingtable,shewasnevervisibleinthemirrorofsociety.

ihavebeenlivingadifferentlife.athome,imakedecisionstogetherwiththerestofthefamily.inschool,ioftentakechargeofvariousactivitiesthesameasotherboysandgirls.notonlythat,icanseesomethinggrannycouldnothavedreamedof─makingdecisionsformyownfuture.mylifehasbeenaseriesofdecisions.icouldchoosefromseveraluniversitiesasicameoutofhighschool.atuniversity,icouldchoosefromarangeofsubjectsfromenglishliteraturetobusinesslaw.andnowupongraduation,iamagainfacedwithdecisions─tofurthermystudyortogotowork;tostayinchinaortogoabroad;togetmarriedrightawayortoremainsingleforabitlonger.

itdoesnotmatterwhetherornotiwillbeefamousorrich,butiwilltreasurethechancetodemonstratemypotentialandtohelpotherwomendemonstratetheirsasfullmembersofsociety,fullyvisibleinthemirrorofhistory.iwilltreasureitbecausetheabundanceofchoicethatienjoycameonlyafterdecadesofeffortsmadebymygranny,mymum,andmillionsofotherchinesewomen.

however,thechoicestobemadebymeandothersofmygenerationareagreatchallenge.themisconceptionthatmenaresuperiortowomenisstilldominatingmanypeople'sminds.whilemenareencouragedtopeteandtoassertthemselves,weareexpectedtobequiet,loyalandobedient.thisisnotverydifferentfromwhatisexpectedofusasgoodwivesandgoodmothers.thechallengewefacecallsforahigherlevelofourpersonaldevelopmentandself-determination.

thestoryofmygrandmotherandmyselfmirrorsthelivesofmillionsofotherwomeninchinaandperhapsintheworld.manyofthemstillleadthelifeofmygrandmother.theirworthisnotyetrecognized.itistheresponsibilityofayoungpersonlikemetoworkhardandstrugglehardsothattheytoowillseethemselvesandwillbeseeninthemirrorofsociety.

thisismydream.thisdream,ibelieve,isnotonlysharedbyourgrandmothers,mothersandsisters,butalsobymanyofourfathers,brothers,husbandsandmalecolleagues.

itwillnotetrueuntileveryonefullyrealizesthatwomencancontributetosocietyandshouldbeguaranteedtherighttodoso.womenholduphalfthesky.

我喜歡照鏡子。記得很小的時候，我常常踮著腳尖在跟我差不多高的梳妝臺前，想要看到鏡子里自己的小臉。如今，我仍然喜歡照鏡子，只不過那張舊梳妝臺已變得太矮了。彎下腰去照鏡子時，我看到的已是一個年輕、散發(fā)著成熟榮耀的姑娘，一個對將來充滿自信的姑娘，一個對鏡中的身影仍然那般著迷的姑娘。

愛照鏡子的這個癖好始于我和奶奶共同度過的童年光陰。我清楚地記得一天夜里，聽見奶奶低聲自語：女人啊，別人怎么就看不見你，怎么就看不見你呢？我對此感到非常困惑，第二天一早就跑到鏡子面前要檢驗(yàn)一下是否鏡子照得見自己。直到如今長大成人后我才明白，奶奶所看不見的并不是鏡子里的形象。

奶奶為了照顧一大家人，起早貪黑，繁忙操持了一輩子。她每天為丈夫和十個子女生火做飯，每到家里來了客人，她卻只能和家中所有女性成員一起擠在狹小的廚房里的灶前吃飯。家里討論家事，奶奶從沒有過問的權(quán)利。爺爺去世之后，她只得聽從新的一家之主──我的大伯，也就是她的長子。經(jīng)歷了一生的艱辛，奶奶盡到了作為女兒、妻子和母親的全部責(zé)任，但作為一個人，她卻很少被別人關(guān)注過。盡管她可以在梳妝臺的鏡子中看到自己的模樣，在家庭和社會中她卻總是一個隱形人。

我過的是與奶奶截然不同的生活。在家里，我與家人一同商定家庭事務(wù)。在學(xué)校里，我和其他同學(xué)一樣經(jīng)常組織各種活動。不僅如此，我做了奶奶做夢也想不到的事情：為自己的將來做出選擇。我的生活就是一連串自我抉擇的結(jié)果。高中畢業(yè)時，我可以從眾多大學(xué)中挑選一所。在大學(xué)里，我可以從一系列專業(yè)中挑選自己最喜歡的專業(yè)──從英國文學(xué)到商法。如今畢業(yè)將至，我又一次面對選擇：或繼續(xù)深造，或開場工作；或留在國內(nèi)，或走出國門；或很快成家，或暫時單身。

不管成名富有還是默默無聞，我都會珍惜發(fā)揮自己潛質(zhì)的時機(jī)。不僅如此，我更要幫助其他婦女珍惜發(fā)揮才智的時機(jī)，因?yàn)樗齻円彩巧鐣娜珯?quán)成員。我非常珍惜這一點(diǎn)，因?yàn)槲宜碛械膹V闊的選擇余地是我的奶奶、我的媽媽，乃至千千萬萬個中國婦女幾十年艱辛奮斗的結(jié)果。

然而，我和我們這一代人將要做出的并非是輕而易舉的選擇。重男輕女的偏見仍然主導(dǎo)著許多人的思想。當(dāng)男人被鼓勵著去競爭，去為自己的權(quán)利奮斗時，卻要我們女人保持沉默，堅(jiān)守貞操，一味服從。這與只要我們當(dāng)個賢妻良母又有什么不同？我們所面臨的挑戰(zhàn)正鼓勵我們?yōu)楦叩膫€人素質(zhì)和更強(qiáng)的自立才能而奮斗。
