AsachildIoftenaccompaniedmyfathertohissmallcoinshopandspenthourswatchinghimwork.WhenIwasolder,Isometimessetupdisplays,waitedoncustomers,andevenbalancedthebooks.Thisexperienceinstilledinmethedesiretoownandmanagemyownbusinesssomeday,yetIunderstandthatthebusinessworldtodayismorecomplex.Thiscomplexityrequiresmoreeducation,andwiththatinmind,IamapplyingtotheMaster’sofBusinessAdministrationprogramatIndianaUniversityBloomington(IUB).

Inadditiontomyhelpingoutinmyfather’sbusiness,Ihavehadnumerousotherworkexperiencesthatfurtherenhancemyqualificationsforthisprogram.MyresumeenumeratesthevariouspositionsIhaveheldatKerasotesTheaters,Chili’srestaurants,andIndianaUniversity’snewStudentRecreationalSportsCenter(SRSC),andwhatallofthesepositionshaveincommonisanemphasisonservingthepubliceffectively.Further,asanassistantmanagerattheShowplace11andastaffcoordinatorattheSRSC,Ihavegainedvaluableexpertiseinmanagingemployeesandcreatingworkschedules.Bothofthesepositionshaveallowedmetodevelopmysalesandpeopleskills,whichareextremelyimportantinanincreasinglyservice-drivenmarketplace.

Notallofmyworkexperiencehasbeenasapaidemployee.PartofmyvolunteeringexperienceatMiddlewayHouse,thelocalbatteredwomen’sshelter,involvedextensiveworkoncomputers,includingwordprocessing,organizingdatabasesandcreatingspreadsheets.Also,IrecentlyparticipatedinaninternshipprogramforacademiccreditwiththeEliLillycorporationinthepersonneldivision.Asamanagementintern,IwasabletowatchtheworkingsofamajorcorporationupcloseandwouldliketheopportunitytocombinemyexperienceswiththetheoreticalbackgroundavailableintheMBAprogramatIUB,withitsemphasisoncomputers,marketingandhumanresources.

MysuccessfulinternshipisoneelementofmyoverallacademicsuccessasanundergraduatehereatIUB,yetIhavealsomadetimeforavarietyofextracurricularactivities,includingworkingformysororityandcompetinginintramuralbasketball.MypositiveexperiencesherehaveresultedinmydesiretostayinBloomingtontocontinuemyacademicendeavors;furthermore,continuingmyeducationherewouldallowmetomakeimportantbusinesscontacts,withthecareergoalofopeningmyowncomputerconsultingfirmintheMidwest.

DuetothecomprehensivenessofChina’s“reformandopen”policies,economicsplaysanincreasinglyimportantroleinthedevelopmentofitsglobalposition.Thoughmoreandmorecompaniesbuilt,managementofcompaniescannotcatchupwiththedevelopmentofthecompanies.ManagementisaburgeoningfieldinChina,soIhopeIcanacquiremoremodernknowledgeonmanagementinEngland.

Therootsofmystronginterestinbusinesscanbetracedbacktomychildhood.MyfatherwasamongthefirstofChina’snewbreedofmodernentrepreneurs.Asayounggirl,itwasinspirationalhearingabouthisbusinessventures,andmeetingthevariedandinterestingcircleofentrepreneurs.Mymotherwasalsoinvolvedinbusinessasanaccountant,helpinghimwithsimplecalculations.AndsoitwasearlyinmylifethatIhopedI,also,wouldsomedaybeabletoentertherealmofbusiness.

Withthetimeofgrowingup,Ipreferredreadingbookstosatisfymycuriosity.IneverceasedtocontemplateoverthequestionsIencountered.Subjectsonbusinessandmanagementbecameaspecialfascinationtomeandmyknowledgeofpsychologyaswellasinterestinthisfieldwasincreasingrapidly.

AsahighschoolstudentinChina,IhadtoconcentrateontheCollegeEntranceExamination(CEE),evenso,booksnotrelatedtotheexamswereneverexcludedfrommylife.UnfortunatelywhensittingintheexaminJune,20xx,IwassonervousthatIdidn’tscorewellintheCEEexam.IenrolledinthedepartmentofComputerScienceinZhejiangCollegeofTraditionalChineseMedicine.Anyattempttopersuademyselftofocusonmymajorturnedouttobeafailureatthebeginningofmycollegelife.Afterseveralterms,IrealizedthatIwouldneverbeinterestedinbeingaprogrammeroranengineer.Atthatmoment,Ilostmydirectionandobjectives.

Mypersistenceinreadingsavedmefromthedarksituation.Asamatteroffact,IenjoyedreadingthebooksincludedEncyclopediaAmerican,andsomebooksaboutmanagementbyPeterF.Drucker.Ibegantonoticesomethinginteresting:Whysomecompaniescanproducemorethanothers?Whysomecompanycansellmorethanothers?Whysomecompaniescanbuildupbutotherscannotwhenfacingthesamedifficulties?

Withthequestionsinmymind,Istartedtoreadmanyrelevantbooks.Iwasluckytoreadthebook“Jack:StraightfromtheGut”byJackWelch,inWhichJohnA.Byrnemakesaclearillustrationthatthemanagementisimportantforacompany.WhenIwasajunior,Iranabookshopbymyselfnearmyschool.Ishouldmanagenotonlythefinanceintheshopbutalsotheemployeesinmyshopevenmadesomestrategiestoenlargethebusinessinmyshoptoholdontheruntheshop.Fromthis,myinterpersonalskillsandthecapacityinbusinesshasbeengreatlydeveloped,definitelyIwasincreasinglyinterestedinwhatIwasdoing.ByDecember,20xx,IhadfinallydeterminedtotakebusinessmanagementasmycareerinsteadofIT.Toaccumulatemorerelevantknowledge,Istrivedtogainmorepracticalworkexperienceinsomebigcompanies.

Fortunately,asasenior,IbeganbyconductinganinternshipintheArchitectureCompanyinZhejiangProvince.Oversixmonths,Iworkedasanassistantofthemanagertoharmonizetherelationshipbetweenthedifferentdepartmentsinthiscompanyandtodraftsomemanagementsystem,whichbroadenedmyperspectiveofmanagementconditionsandbusinessperformanceindifferentindustries.TheexperienceshowedmethatmanagementismuchmoreimportantthanthatofIthoughtinbigcompanies.Aftergraduation,Icontinuedmyworkinthiscompany.InMay,20xx,thecompanyofferedmeanopportunitytoparticipateinantrainingprogramheldbyafamousmanagementschool.Throughin-depthdiscussionswithteachersandstudentsintheclasses,theyallencouragedmetopursuemyfuturecareerinmanagementfieldbecauseofmyintellectualabilityandthebrandnewideasImentioned.

Duringtheshortperiodoftraining,Irealizedthatpursuingahigherdegreeinmanagementisawisechoiceformenow.Lancaster,withitsexcellenceinmanagement,representstheperfectfitformyneeds.Inyourchallengingenvironment,Icanbuildtherequiredfoundationofknowledgerelatedtomanagementtoachievemygoals.Iamfirmlyconvincedthatyouradmissionwillbemyfirststepofsuccess.Withthisinmind,Iherebysubmitmyapplication,andawaityourfavorablereply.
