AdditionalBackgroundTheCityofHiroshima,cityonsouthwesternHonsh?Island(本州島),Japan,capitalofHiroshimaPrefecture,attheheadofHiroshimaBay.Thecitywasfoundedin1594onsixislandsinthe?taRiverdelta(織田河).Hiroshimagrewrapidlyasacastletownandcommercialcity,andafter1868itwasdevelopedasamilitarycenter.DuringWorldWarII,itcontainedthedefenseofallofsouthernJapan.Thecitywasalsoacommunicationscenter,astoragepoint,andanassemblyareafortroops.HiroshimathusbecametheprimarytargetofthefirstU.S.nuclearattackmission.Thecenterofthecitycontainedanumberofreinforcedconcretebuildingsaswelllighterstructures.Outsidethecenter,theareawascongestedbyadensecollectionofsmallwoodenworkshopssetamongJapanesehouses;afewlargerindustrialplantslayneartheoutskirtsofthecity.Thehouseswereofwoodenconstructionwithtileroofs.Manyoftheindustrialbuildingswerealsoofwoodframeconstruction.Thecityasawholewashighlysusceptibletofiredamage.ThepopulationofHiroshimahadreachedapeakofover380,000earlierinthewar.Atthetimeoftheattackthepopulationwasapproximay255,000.Thisfigureisbasedontheregisteredpopulation,usedbytheJapaneseincomputingrationties,andtheestimatesofadditionalworkersandtroopswhowerebroughtintothecitymaynotbehighlyAfterthewarin1949theJapanesededicatedHiroshimaasaninternationalshrineofpeace.Thecitywaslargelyrebuilt,andcommercialactivitieswereMachinery,automobiles,foodprocessing,andthebrewingofsake(清酒)arethemainindustries.Thesurroundingarea,althoughmountainoushasfertilevalleyswheresilk,rice,andwheatareproduced.Thepopulationin1990hasreached1,085,705.另:各島島名ThefourlargestislandsareHonshū,Hokkaidō,KyūshūandShikoku,togetheraccountingfor97%ofJapan'slandarea.本州島
