5.5BarriersFacingAlternativeFuelsEveryalternativefuelimposessomecombinationofincreasedcapitalcosts,operatingcosts,technicalchallenges,orinstitutionalissuesascomparedtodieselfuel.Barriersthathaveinhibitedgreateruseofalternativefuelsinpublictransportationvehiclesinclude:?Highercapitalcostsofalternativefuelvehiclesandsupportingfacilities,especiallynaturalgasfacilitiesandelectrificationofroutesfortrolleybusesorcommuterraillines;?Higheroperatingcostsforitemslikethealternativefuelsthemselvesandmaintainingvehiclesandequipmentusingthem;?Unprovenreliabilityanddurabilityofearlyproductionmodelsofnewalternativefuelvehiclesthatcouldaffecttransitservicedependability;?Limitedavailabilityofnewalternativefuels;?Riskofinterruptionsinfueldelivery;?Theneedtodevelop,adoptandenforcecodesandstandardsforalternativefuelperformanceandstability,comparabletothoseusedinspecifyingdieselfuelquality;?Higherlogisticscostsofaddingaduplicativeinventoryofcomponentsandsparepartspeculiartothealternativefuelvehicles;and,?Costsofdevelopingnewoperatingandmaintenanceproceduresforhandlingalternativefuelsandconductingspecialtrainingformechanicsandvehicleoperators.Question:1What
