It'snowonderifthisseemstothestudentapointlessexercise,becausewe'renowthreestepsremovedfromrealwork:thestudentsareimitatingEnglishprofessors,whoareimitatingclassicalscholars,whoaremerelytheinheritorsofatraditiongrowingoutofwhatwas,700yearsago,fascinatingandurgentlyneededwork.
Theotherbigdifferencebetweenarealessayandthethingstheymakeyouwriteinschoolisthatarealessaydoesn'ttakeapositionandthendefendit.Thatprinciple,liketheideathatweoughttobewritingaboutliterature,turnsouttobeanotherintellectualhangoveroflongforgottenorigins.

VOCALIZATION
Vocalizationisanotherfault.Somepoorreadersthinkitnecessarytopronouncealoudeachwordasitisread.Usuallythispronunciationisquitesoft,sothatthestudentismorewhisperingtohimselfthanactuallyreadingaloud,buteventhisisveryundesirable.Thechiefdisadvantageofpronouncingwordswhileyoureadthemisthatittendstotiereading'speedtospeakingspeed,andthesilentreadingofmostnormalreadersisnearlytwiceasfastastheirspeaking.Usuallythisfaultcanbeeliminatedinolderstudentsbytheirownconsciouseffort,possiblywiththeaidofafewremindersfromtheteacher.
Vocalizationbybeginningreadersisacommonfault;afterareaderreachessomematurityitbecomesveryundesirable.
Vocalizationtakesvariousmodifiedforms.Sometimesareaderwillmerelymovehislipssoundlessly.Atothertimeshemaymaketongueorthroatmovementswithoutlipmovement.Stillotherreaderswillhaveactivitygoingonintheirvocalcords,whichcanbedetectedbythestudentifheplaceshisfingersalongsidehisvocalcordsinthethroatwhileheisreading.Vocalcordvibrationcanbefeltwiththefingersquiteeasily.Liketruevocalization,theseminorpartsof"subvocalization"--lipmovement,tongueorthroatmovementandvocalcordmovement--canbestoppedbyconsciouseffortofthestudent.
