Introduction

Internationaltradeisanessentialaspectoftheglobaleconomy.Intheworldtoday,theexchangeofgoodsandservicesbetweencountrieshassignificantlyincreased.Toconductinternationaltrade,tradersmustbeabletocommunicateusingacommonlanguage.Englishhasbecomethemostcommonlyusedlanguageininternationaltrade.Therefore,understandingtheEnglishtermsandphrasesusedininternationaltradeiscrucialforsuccessfulbusinesstransactions.

Inthisdocument,wewillexplorethemostcommonEnglishtermsandphrasesusedininternationaltrade,specificallyinthebuyingandsellingofgoods.

Incoterms

Incotermsareasetofgloballyrecognizedtermsthatdefinetheresponsibilitiesofbuyersandsellersininternationaltrade.HerearesomeofthemostcommonIncotermsusedininternationaltrade:

ExWorks(EXW):Thistermreferstothebuyerbeingresponsibleforalltransportationcostsandrisksduringtheshippingprocess.Thesellerisonlyresponsibleformakingthegoodsavailableattheirpremises.

FreeonBoard(FOB):UnderFOB,thesellerisresponsibleforallcostsuptothepointthegoodsareloadedontotheship.Thebuyerisresponsibleforcostsandrisksfromthatpointforward.

Cost,Insurance,andFreight(CIF):CIFreferstothesellerbeingresponsibleforallcosts,includingtransport,insurance,andfreightchargesuptothepointofarrivalattheportofdestination.

DeliveredDutyPaid(DDP):DDPmeansthatthesellerisresponsibleforallcosts,includingtransportation,insurance,customsduties,andtaxes,untilthegoodsaredeliveredtothebuyer.

PaymentTerms

Ininternationaltrade,businesstransactionsmustincludepaymenttermsthatdescribehowandwhenpaymentshouldbemade.Herearesomeofthemostcommonpaymenttermsusedininternationaltrade:

LetterofCredit(L/C):AnL/Cisabankinginstrumentusedtoguaranteepaymentfromthebuyertotheseller.Athird-partybankissuestheL/Candreleasespaymentoncethespecifiedconditionsaremet.

AdvancePayment(AP):APmeansthatthebuyerpaysforthegoodsbeforetheyareshipped.Thisistypicallyusedwhenthesellerrequirespaymentupfrontduetohighproductioncosts.

OpenAccount(OA):Anopenaccountmeansthatthebuyerreceivesthegoodsbeforetheypayforthem.Thispaymenttermrequiresahighleveloftrustbetweenthebuyerandtheseller.

TradeDocuments

Tradedocumentsarenecessaryforinternationalbusinesstransactions.Theyensurethatbothpartiesareawareofthetermsandconditionsofthetransactionandthatthegoodsareshippedandreceivedcorrectly.Herearesomeofthemostcommontradedocumentsusedininternationaltrade:

CommercialInvoice:Thisdocumentdetailstheprice,quantity,anddescriptionofthegoodsbeingsold.

BillofLading:Thebillofladingservesasareceiptforthegoodsbeingshippedandprovidesevidencethatthegoodshavebeenloadedontothevessel.

PackingList:Thepackinglistprovidesadetaileddescriptionofthegoodsineachpackage,includingquantityandweight.
