In1925,UnaiponbecamethefirstAboriginalwritertopublish.HisfirstpublishedwritingwasanarticleinSydney'sDailyTelegraphnewspaper.Thearticlehadthetitle:"Aboriginals:TheirTraditionsandCustoms".Hewrotemanyotherarticlesfornewspapersandmagazines,gettingpublicityabouttherightsofAboriginalpeople.HealsowroteabouttheneedforwhiteandblackpeopletoworktogetherandtheneedforequalrightsforbothblackandwhiteAustralians.Hewaswelleducatedinbothcultures,andin1929hehelpedwithagovernmentsurveyofAboriginalhealthandinterests.
DavidUnaipondiedin1967attheageof95,inthesameyearwhenAboriginalpeoplewerefirstcountedaspartofAustralia'spopulation.In1995,DavidUnaipon'spicturewasputontheAustralianfifty-dollarnote,withadrawingofoneofhisinventions.

However,thefactthatNostalgiabecamesofamousalsodisturbedYubecauseamongtheover1,000poemsthathe'dwritten,Nostalgiaseemedtobetheonlyonethatthepublicevertalkedaboutandappreciated.
"I'dliketothinkofNostalgiaasmybusinesscard,butunfortunatelyitgottoobigthatitkeptpeoplefromseeingtherealme,"Yuoncesaid,accordingtoChinaYouthDaily.
Indeed,writingpoemsisonlyoneofYu'smanytalents.GreatChinesewriterLiangShiqiu(1903—1987)oncespokeofYu,"Hewritespoemswithhisrighthandandprose(散文)withhisleft.Thereishardlyanyonewhomatcheshisachievementsatthetime."
