WilliamWordsworth(1770-1850)EarlylifeofWordsworthThesecondoffivechildrenborntoJohnWordsworthandAnnCookson,WilliamWordsworthwasbornon7April1770inWordsworthHouseinCockermouth,Cumberland.Wordsworth'sfatherwasalegalrepresentativeofJamesLowther,1stEarlofLonsdaleand,throughhisconnections,livedinalargemansioninthesmalltown.Hewasfrequentlyawayfromhomeonbusiness,however,hedidencourageWilliaminhisreading,andinparticularsethimtocommittomemorylargeportionsofverse,includingworksbyMilton,ShakespeareandSpenser.Wordsworthwastaughttoreadbyhismotherandattended,first,atinyschooloflowqualityinCockermouth,thenaschoolinPenrithforthechildrenofupper-classfamilies.WordsworthwastaughtboththeBibleandtheSpectator,butlittleelse.Afterthedeathofhismother,in1778,Wordsworth'sfathersenthimtoHawksheadGrammarSchoolinLancashire(nowinCumbria)andsentDorothytolivewithrelativesinYorkshire.SheandWilliamdidnotmeetagainforanothernineyears.MarriageandchildrenJohnWordsworth(18June1803–1875).Marriedfourtimes:1.IsabellaCurwen(d.1848)hadsixchildren:Jane,Henry,William,John,CharlesandEdward.2.HelenRoss(d.1854).Nochildren3.MaryAnnDolan(d.after1858)hadonedaughterDora(b.1858).4.MaryGamble.NochildrenMajorworksLyricalBallads,withaFewOtherPoems(1798)"SimonLee""WeareSeven”"LinesWritteninEarlySpring”"ExpostulationandReply”"TheTablesTurned”"TheThorn""LinesComposedAFewMilesaboveTinternAbbey”LyricalBallads,withOtherPoems(1800)PrefacetotheLyricalBallads"StrangefitsofpassionhaveIknown”“SheDweltamongtheUntroddenWay”"Threeyearsshegrew""ASlumberDidmySpiritSeal”"Itravelledamongunknownmen""LucyGray”"TheTwoAprilMornings""SolitaryReaper""Nutting”"TheRuinedCottage""Michael""TheKittenAtPlay"

GuidetotheLakes(1810)"TotheCuckoo”TheExcursion(1814)Laodamia(1815,1845)TheWhiteDoeofRylstone(1815)PeterBell(1819)ThePrelude(1850)LyricalBalladsLyricalBallads,withaFewOtherPoemsisacollectionofpoemsbyWilliamWordsworthandSamuelTaylorColeridge,firstpublishedin1798andgenerallyconsideredtohavemarkedthebeginningoftheEnglishRomanticmovementinliterature.Theimmediateeffectoncriticswasmodest,butitbecameandremainsalandmark,changingthecourseofEnglishliteratureandpoetry.Mostofthepoemsinthe1798editionwerewrittenbyWordsworth,withColeridgecontributingonlyfourpoemstothecollection,includingoneofhismostfamousworks,"TheRimeoftheAncientMariner”.Asecondeditionwaspublishedin1800,inwhichWordsworthincludedadditionalpoemsandaprefacedetailingthepair'savowedpoeticalprinciples.

Foranotheredition,publishedin1802,WordsworthaddedanappendixtitledPoeticDictioninwhichheexpandedtheideassetforthinthepreface.FeaturesofhisworksWordsworthcanpenetratetotheheartofthingsandgivethereadertheverylifeofnature.Andhethinksthatcommonlifeistheonlysubjectofliteraryinterest.Thejoysandsorrowsofthecommonpeoplearehisthemes.Hissympathyalwaysgoestothesufferingpoor.Hesaid“Allgoodpoetryisthespontaneousoverflowofpowerfulfeelingsrecollectedintranquility”andthissentenceisconsideredastheprincipleofhispoetrycreationwhichwassetforthintheprefacetotheLyricalBallads.Wordsworthappealeddirectlyonindividualsensations,asthefoundationinthecreationandappreciationofpoetry.Hehasworshipfornatureandhestronglypraisesthebeautyofnature,andtrieshisbesttoawakepeople’sawarenessofnature.Hethinkspeoplecanbenefitsalotfromnatureratherthananythingelse.LaureateshipandotherhonorsWordsworthremainedaformidablepresenceinhislateryears.In1837,theScottishpoetandplaywrightJoannaBailliereflectedonherlongacquaintancewithWordsworth."Helookslikeamanthatonemustnotspeaktounlessonehassomesensiblethingtosay.howeverhedoesoccasionallyconversecheerfully&well;andwhenoneknowshowbenevolent&excellentheis,itdisposesonetobeverymuchpleasedwithhim."In1838,WordsworthreceivedanhonorarydoctorateinCivilLawfromtheUniversityofDurhamandthefollowingyearhewasawardedthesamehonorarydegreebytheUniversityofOxford.In1842,thegovernmentawardedhimaCivilListpensionof£300ayear.FollowingthedeathofRobertSoutheyin1843WordsworthbecamePoetLaureate.Wordsworththusbecametheonlypoetlaureatetowritenoofficialverses.ThesuddendeathofhisdaughterDorain1847attheageofonly42wasdifficultfortheagingpoettotakeandinhisdepression,hecompletelygaveupwritingnewmaterial.TheLakePoetsTheLakePoetswereagroupofEnglishpoetswhoalllivedintheLakeDistrictofEngland,UnitedKingdom,attheturnofthenineteenthcentury.ThethreemainfiguresofwhathasbecomeknownastheLakesSchoolwereWilliamWordsworth,SamuelTaylorCol
