traditionalmethodsofremovinghiccups,likedrinkingwateroradjustingbreathing.Hethencameupwith

theideathatastrawcouldhelpinterrupthiccups.Thestraw,whichgoesbythemarketingnameofHiccAway,

requiresmoresuctionpower(吸力)thanaregularstrawwhenpeopledrinkthroughit.Drinkingthroughthis

strawcanexcitethe"Phrenic"and"Vagus“nervesatthesametime,allowingthebraintostophiccups.

Dr.JamesAlvarezfromtheUniversityofTexasatArlingtonconductedstudyonHiccAway.He

gathered249volunteerstotestthestraw.About92%oftheparticipantssaidthatHiccAwayhelpedtheir

hiccupstoaway.Whenitcomestoeffectiveness,thisstrawreceivedascoreof4.58outof5.About90%of

theparticipantsrateditmoreeffectivenessthantraditionalmethods.Amajorityoftheparticipantsreported

theyonlyexperiencedhiccupsoccasionally,whileabout11reporteddailyhiccups,and53reportedthatthey

sufferedfromhiccupsweekly.Thefrequentsuffersreportedbacksuccessratesthatwereconsistentlyashigh

asthosefrompeoplewhodidn'tsufferfromthemasoften.

However,hiccupsareanissuewhereplaceboeffect(安慰劑效應(yīng))couldlikelycomeintoplay.Alotof

peopleswearbysolutionsthatmightnotworkforothers.Itisnotclearhowthistrialcouldbeconductedina

morescientificway.

withcognitivedecline.Theguidelinesalsosaydoctorsmayconsiderrecommendingcognitivetrainingto

patientswithmemoryloss,butnottorelyonit.Sofar,thereport'sauthorssaytheevidenceistoo

inconclusivetosayforsureifbrainexercises,likememoryandattentiontrainingorproblemsolvingfor

everydayissuesassociatedwithmemoryloss,arebeneficial.Still,thesemorningbrainexercisescan'tdoany

harm.

Buttherewasonebigdiscoveryfromthenewguidelines:exercisingjusttwiceaweekcouldimprove

cognitivedecline.Onestudyshowedadultswithmildcognitiveimpairmentwhodidresistancetrainingtwice

aweekscoredbetteronexecutivefunctionandassociative(聯(lián)想的)memoryteststhanagroupthatworked

onbalancing,stretching,andrelaxing.

What'smore,anotherstudyhadolderadultsattendeitherbiweeklyhealthclassesorsessionsofaerobics,

strengthtrainingbalanceexercises,andmultitaskingtraining.Sixmonthslater,theoneswho'dexercised

regularlyscoredbetteroncognitivehealthandmemorytests,plushadlessbrainshrinkage.

TheAANnowrecommendsthatdoctorstellpatientswithmemorylosstoexercisetwiceaweektokeep

theirmindsclear.Ifyouwanttoimproveyourmemory,thisisthebesttimetoexercise.Itlookslikeyou've

gotjustonemorereasontocleartimeinyourscheduleforaworkout—evenifit'sonlyontheweekends.
