Hepushedthebuttonashesmiledbackatmewithblueeyesthatsparkled.He

hadnohair,andhismouthwascoveredwithapapermask.Hewasn,tfrommy

floor...themasksonmyfloorwereoxygenmasks,andtheystillhadtheirown

hair.Asapediatrienurseinapediatrichospitalthesesightswereacommonand

acceptedpartofmyjob.

ItwasJuly24,aswelterin父summerday.Butwhentheelevatordoorsopenedto

thefifthfloor,itwaslikeascenefromawinterwonderland.Therewasalighted

Christmastreeinthecornerandpapersnowflakeshangingfromeveryceilingtile.

Redribbonsadornedallthedoorknobsofthepatientrooms,andsnowmenwerepasted

oneveryotheravailableopenspace.TheChristmascarol“WeWishYouaMerry

Christmas,,playedinthebackground,harmonizedbyAlvinandtheChipmunks.The

playroomwasfilledwithchildrenwithoxygentanksandIVpolesintow.Therewas

muchlaughterandgigglinggoingonasthe“playlady,,turnedtomeandsaid,

uMerryChristmas!WearecelebratingChristmasinJuly...sothatmakestoday

ChristmasEve!Hopeyou'vegotyourshoppingdone!”

Ismiledatherinventivenessandsaid,“Whatagreatidea,Betsy!Two

Christmasesinoneyear.Thesekidsmusthavebeenreallygood!”

AsmyafternoonshiftbeganandIstartedmyassignment,IsaweachofSanta's

“Julyelves“Iwasassignedto,allgatheredintheplayroom,stillgigglingand

listeningtotheChipmunks.Ididaquickchecktomakesureeveryonewasokay,and

letthemgetbacktothefun.

AfterplaytimewasfinishedandIVpolesandoxygentankswithkidsattached

werereturnedtotheirrooms,Ibeganmyrounds.

IsavedStaceyforlastsoIcouldspendmoretimewithherasneeded.Shewas

waitingforme,withthatslightlylopsided吐inandthosehugebrowneyes.Ihad

beencaringforherformanymonths.

Icouldseeshewasreallytiredwhenhertreatmenttoclearherlungswas

finished.ShefellasleepduringdinnerwhilewatchingTV;shedidn,thavethe

energyofmostothereight-year-olds.Iwasconsciousofthesubtlechanges,and

Iknewhertreatmentoptionswerelimited.Iunderstoodthatshewasslippingaway.

tissuepaperandtiedwitharedribbon.Iwastouchedandsurprised."CanIopen

“No,IwantyoutowaitfortherealChristmas,withsnow,andtrees,and
