2.HistoryandRationaleforFormat&TimingSelection

2.1SituationandNeeds

Thecomputerindustryhas,primarilyduetothehighdegreeofflexibilityprovidedbythemodernmulti-frequencyCRTdisplay,traditionallyemployedaverywiderangeofdisplayformatsandtimingsevenwithinagivenindividualsystem.Thispermitsthesystemtoadaptthedisplay“onthefly”totherequirementsofvariousapplications,andalsopermitstheusertoadaptthesystemtoawiderangeofdisplay-deviceformats,sizes,andtechnologies.However,todatethedevelopmentoftimingstandardsforthesevariouscombinationsofformatsandrateshasnotbeendoneinanysortofcoordinatedmanner–andsowehaveanumberofvariousstandardformatswhichdonotinteroperatewell,andtimingswhichcannotallbepreciselyproducedbyanygivengraphicssystem.

VESAfirstattemptedtoaddressthisproblemthroughthereleaseoftheGeneralizedTimingFormula(GTF)Standardin1996;GTFdefinedaprocesswherebyagivendisplaydeviceandhostsystemcouldalgorithmicallydetermineatimingwhichwouldpermitbothtoworktogether,reducingtheneedforexplicittimingspecificationstocoverallpossiblecases.TheGTFmethodworkswellonpapersinceitreliesonbeingabletocreateapixelfrequencyofinfiniteresolution.This,however,isnotpracticalforrealworldapplicationswhereclockgeneratorshaveafiniteresolution.Italsodoesnotcaterforanincreasingmarketsegment,suchasvideoinawindow,whichrequiresthevideotimingtobepreciselylockedtoanexternalimagesource.

Also,duetotheincreasingnumberofnon-CRT,fixed-formatdisplaytypesinthemarket,thereisaneedfortimingstandardsthatspecificallyaddresstherequirementsofthesetechnologies.CRT-compatibletimingsrequirehigherpixelratesthanwouldberequiredbytheseotherdisplaytechnologiesduetolargeamountofblankingwhichisrequiredforretrace.This,inmostcases,representswastedbandwidthandresultsinhigher-than-neededclockrates.

Inaddressingtheseneeds,though,itisimportanttokeepinmindthefactthatthecomputergraphicssystems,whichmustproducevideooutputstothesespecifications,arenotinfinitelyflexible.Ingeneral,theycannotproduceanyarbitrarynumberofpixelsperline,synthesizeanygivenpixelclockexactly,andsoforth.Inaddition,theproblemofscalinginformationbetweendifferentformatsandratessaysthatweshouldnotsimplygeneratetimingsandformatsasindependententities.Somethoughtshouldbegiventotheinteroperabilityandcompatibilitywithinthechosenset,aswellastotheabilityofthegraphicshardwaretoproducethespecifiedtiming.

Thisstandardrepresentsanattempttoaddresstheseneedsinasingle,coordinatedeffortbydevelopingasetofrulesforgeneratingtiming.Thegoalbeingtocreateamethodbywhichdisplaymanufacturersandgraphichardwarevendorscandevelopnewproductswithenhancedcompatibilityandinteroperability.

Asetofstandardformatsispresented,alongwithalimitedsetofstandardrates,andthentimingspecificationsforeachcombinationisgivenforbothCRTandnon-CRTdisplays,regardlessofinterfacetype.Thegoalbeingthatanygraphicshardware,ifdesignedwiththesesimpleguidelinesinmind,shouldbeabletoexactlyproduceanyspecifiedtimingwithinitsrange.

2.2FormatSelection

Itisnottheintentionofthisdocumenttoimposeafixedsetofstandardformats.Thisdocumentlistsacompilationoftimings,whichareconsideredtobe"industrystandard"formatsthatthePCanddisplayindustrymayadopt.Inchoosingtheseformats,thefollowingbasicguidelineswereconsidered:

Whetherornottheformatisalreadyanestablishedindustrystandard.Itisnotourintentiontocompletelyre-writethesetofformatsalreadyinusewithintheindustry,evenifinmanycasesthissetisnotoptimizedforinteroperability(scaling,etc.).However,alternativesthatdooffercertainadvantagesovertheiroldercounterpartsmayalsobeprovided,whereappropriate,intheVESAstandardset.
