Earlylifeandcareer

E.B.WhitegraduatedfromCornellUniversitywithaBachelorofArtsdegreein1921.Hepickedupthenickname"Andy"atCornell,wheretraditionconfersthatmonikeronanymalestudentsurnamedWhite,afterCornellco-founderAndrewDicksonWhite.WhileatCornell,heworkedaseditorofTheCornellDailySunwithclassmateAllisonDanzigwholaterbecameasportswriterforTheNewYorkTimes.WhitewasalsoamemberoftheQuillandDaggersocietyandPhiGammaDelta.HewroteforTheSeattleTimesandtheSeattlePost-Intelligencer,andworkedforanadvertisingagencybeforereturningtoNewYorkCityin1924.

HepublishedhisfirstarticleinTheNewYorkermagazinein1925,thenjoinedthestaffin1927andcontinuedtocontributeforsixdecades.Bestrecognizedforhisessaysandunsigned"NotesandComment"pieces,hegraduallybecameoneofthemostimportantcontributorstoTheNewYorkeratatimewhenitwasarguablythemostimportantAmericanliterarymagazine.HealsoservedasacolumnistforHarper'sMagazinefrom1938to1943.Heexcelledasawriteroflightverse,ascanbesampledinhis"TheFoxofPeapackandOtherPoems"in1928.

Children'sbooksandElementsofStyle

Inthelate1930s,Whiteturnedhishandtochildren'sfictiononbehalfofaniece,JaniceHartWhite.Hisfirstchild'sbook,StuartLittle,waspublishedin1945,andCharlotte'sWebappearedin1952.StuartLittlereceivedalukewarmwelcomefromtheliterarycommunityatfirst,dueinpart[citationneeded]tothereluctancetoendorseitbyAnneCarrollMoore,theretiredbutstillpowerfulchildren'slibrarianfromtheNewYorkPublicLibrary.However,bothwentontoreceivehighacclaim,andin1970jointlywontheLauraIngallsWilderMedal.Thatsameyear,hepublishedhisthirdchildren'snovel,TheTrumpetoftheSwan,whichin1973receivedtheSequoyahAward[citationneeded]fromOklahomaandtheWilliamAllenWhiteAward[citationneeded]fromKansas,bothofwhichwereawardedbystudentsvotingfortheirfavoritebookoftheyear.

In1959,WhiteeditedandupdatedTheElementsofStyle.ThishandbookofgrammarandlanguagestyleforwritersofAmericanEnglishhadbeenwrittenandpublishedin1918byWilliamStrunk,Jr.,oneofWhite'sprofessorsatCornell.White'sreworkofthebookwasextremelywellreceived,andfurthereditionsoftheworkfollowedin1972,1979,and1999;anillustratededitionfollowedin2005.Thatsameyear,aNewYorkcomposernamedNicoMuhlypremieredashortoperabasedonthebook.Thevolumeisastandardtoolforstudentsandwritersandremainsrequiredreadinginmanycompositionclasses.

Familyandlaterlife

WhitemarriedKatharineSergeantAngellin1929.AngellwasalsoaneditoratTheNewYorker,andtheauthorofOnwardandUpwardintheGarden.Theyhadason,JoelWhite,anavalarchitectandboatbuilder,whoownedBrooklinBoatyardinBrooklin,Maine.Katharine'ssonfromherfirstmarriage,RogerAngell,hasspentdecadesasafictioneditorforTheNewYorkerandiswell-knownasthemagazine'sbaseballwriter.WhitewasrelatedtoJamesWhitewhowasaMethodistpreacherinMissouri.

WhitediedonOctober1,1985,athisfarmhomeinNorthBrooklin,Maine.HewasburiedbesidehiswifeattheBrooklinCemetery.

Awards

In1978,WhitewonanhonoraryPulitzerPrizeforhisworkasawhole.OtherawardshereceivedincludedaPresidentialMedalofFreedomin1963andmembershipsinavarietyofliterarysocietiesthroughouttheUnitedStates.

Charlotte'sWebSummary

Onemorning,atthebreakfasttable,eightyear-oldFinnsawherfathertookaleavehome.Sheaskedhermomanddadwheretogo.Hermothertoldherhewasgoingtokillanewbornpiglets.Shewasshockedbythenews,hepersuadedhisfathertoputpig.Herfatherwasimpressedbyherandagreedtolethimtoraisepigs.

Fernbelievesthatpigandbabycare,sokeepabottlewithababyfeedingpigseat.Herparentsthinkitisnotgoodthendecidedtopigstotownfarm.

HewassenttothefarmandmissFern,butsoonhemadenewfriends,thebestfriendgreyspideramancalledSherlock.WilburisfascinatedbyCharlotte,althoughtobeginwithheisslightlysuspiciousofthewayshecatchesherfood-hedoesn'tliketheideathatshespinsbugsinherwebandsuckstheirblood.HesoonrealizesthatCharlotteiseverythingbutcruelandbloodthirstyandthathermethodofeatingisentirelynecessaryforaspider.

Wilburatthefarmandfriendshappyeveryday,seetheCharlotteweb.Butoneday,hereceivedsometerriblenews,endedhisattitudebelightofheartfromcare.

ThesheeptellsWilburthatMrZuckermanisfatteninghimupforChristmasdinne.Thepigisverysad,hedidnotwanttodiebecauseheisinthehappyfarm.Sherlockcalmeddownandpromisedhim,shedidn'tgethimkilled.Shehasn'tfiguredouthowtosavehim,butshewassureshewould.

Onemorning,lurvyputWilbur'shogwash,henoticedSherlockspiderwebflickerinthemorningfog."Pig"iswovenintothenet.LuWeiwasterrified,andsaidaprayer.HequicklytoldMr.Zuckermanwhoalsosurprisednewssoonspreadfarandwide.

Worriedthatpeoplemaysomepigsmoreandmoreboring,SherlockaskedTempletontohelpherfindtheratmorewordsonherwebsite.KnowifWilburkilledhim,withouthisswill,TanPullmanreluctantlyhelpsSherlockfind.Inaword,shewrotewas"terrific","radiant".

Atthesametime,MRScultivatedlandtoworryaboutfernspendstoomuchtimeinthebarn,becomesmorealert,herdaughtertoldheraboutCharlotteandSherlock'sstory.Mrs.AlaBelldecidedtogotoseedoctorDorianaskedhimwhathethoughtofthefernanimalwilltalk,heletthenetworkofthemysteriouscharacter.DRDorianisverycalm,rationalandsaid,thetruewonderisitright?Inthewebpagewritingbutinfact,aspiderinstinctivelyknowhowtobuildawebsitewithoutanyfees.Hesaid,itisquitepossible,talkinganimal,peoplecannotheartheirvoices,probablybecausetheytalktoomuch,listentoreasoniswhatnaturewalk.

WithZuckerman'sfamouspignews,ZuckermanandtheAlaBellfamilydecidedtotakeWilburtothefair.Sherlockagreedtogotooeventhoughshewastired,veryquickmustestablishaholdhereggsac.Atthefair,SherlockisseeninWilbur'spendownispartofalargerspringpigcalleduncle.Knowheisfiercecompetition,CharlottedecidedtorotatetheotherWebandTempletonagaintofindaword.

TheadultsandchildrenenjoythemselvesatthefairandAveryandFernareparticularlyexcitedthattheyareallowedtogooffwithouttheirparentsallafternoon.FernspendsallafternoonwithHenryFussyandtheygoontheFerriswheeltogether.

InthenightbeforeSherlockbeganherweb,andwillbe"humble"writing.Inthemorning,theZuckermanfamilyandtheAlaBellfamilytoseethewordsonthespider'sweb,theyalsonotethatthereisabluetagonhisnest-hehasalreadywonawards.ZuckermanignoredthelabelstelleverybodytogiveWilburamilkbath.EveryonecametoWilburhome,tellhimthegoodnews.

Suddenly,Zuckermanrequirementsinthespeaker'svoicetohisfamouspigtojudgeaboothinaspecialaward.Wilburisanextraordinary,unusual,Mr.Zuckermanwasawardedthemedalis$25.SinceWilbur'snamefirstappearedontheInternet,themiracleisalwaysintheheartsofeveryone.Wilburreturnedtohishome.

WilburnoticesthatCharlotteisquietandlooksunwell.Shetellshimthatsheheriscontentnowthatsheknowsheissafe-sheknowsMrZuckermanwillneverharmhimnow,butshetellsWilburthatsheisfailingandwillbedeadinadayortwo.Thegrief-strickenWilburaskedSherlocktogotohisfamily,butshedidnothaveenoughenergytoexercise.WilburdecidedtotakeCharlotteoocystshome.Theverynextday,afterWilburleft,Charlottedied.

BackattheZuckerman's,WilburwaitspatientlyforthebirthofCharlotte'schildrenandoftenlookslonginglyatherempty,brokenweb.whenherlastchildwasborn,Wilburfeltsadbecausethechildrenhavegonewiththewind.Fortunately,therearethreesmallspiderstayedwithhimandhehasbecomeagoodfriend.Yearafteryear,moreandmoreofthespiderwasborn,butnobodycanreplaceCharlotteinhisheart.

MYVIEWS

Beforereadingthisbook,Ifirstwatchedthemovie.Myimpressionofpigisdirty,butWilburplayedcaughtmyeye,heimmediatelychangedmybadimpressionofpig.Especiallythepig'sownerisplayedbytheHollywoodlittleLolitafanning,letusfeelthemovieismild.Infact,Ihavealwaysthoughtthatthisisachildren'sfilm,itwillnotbringusadultstoomuchtouched.However,nottomentionWilburandSherlock'sfriendship,pureandsimpleWilburdoesinfectedme.

BesidesthefriendshipbetweenWilburandCharlotte,Ihavetwofeelings.

Firstis,asimpleandoptimisticpersonalitymakespeoplehappy.WhenWilburwassentintothefarm,heisveryhappy,becausehethoughthecanmakenewfriendsthere.Whileotheranimalisacontemptuousdisregard,theythinktheyjustworkeverydayforthehumanandhumanneed,nofunatall.Wilburfeelsveryinteresting.Infact,thepigisthefateofthemostmiserableatthefarm,thecowonlymilk,geesejustlying,andpigsaretobekilledonthetable.Wilburbutnottothinktoomuch,itwillnotaskwhatwillhappentomorrowwhatthefuturewillbe,itisonlysimpleoptimisticlivinginth
