wereinterestedinbetterunderstandinghowyoungpeopleusesocialmedia,andhowthey
feelitimpactstheirhealthandwell-being.Todothis,weselected84participantsfromthe
mainsampleandhadthemtakepartinsmallgroupinterviews.
Theresultsshowedthatsocialmediaoftenhadapositiveinfluenceonyoungpeople's
motivationforbeingphysicallyactiveandontheirabilitytomakeconsciousdietchoices.
Socialmediaalsoallowedthemtoaccesstheinfbnnationtheyfoundinspirational,andlearn
aboutdifferentappstheycouldusetobephysicallyactiveormonitortheirprogress.They
reportedthatlikes,comments,andviewsontheirsocialmediapostsalsohelpedthemstay
motivatedtoexercise.
Encouragingly,theyoungpeoplewespoketowerealsohighlydiscerningusersofsocial
media.Theythoughtcarefullyaboutthecontenttheywereengagingwithonline.Forinstance,
theteenagersreportedthattheywouldoftenignorecontentthathadthepotentialtoleadto
harm,suchasimagesorvideosthatpresentedunrealisticworkoutsorexpectationsfbrtheir
bodies.
Whiletherisksshouldcertainlynotbeoverlooked,ourfindingsshowthatsocialmedia
canhaveapositiveeffectonyoungpeople'shealthandwell-being.Abenefitofsocialmedia
isthatitprovidesreal-time,low-costinformation,andsupportfromtheirpeers.Making
youngpeopleusesocialmediasafely,criticallyandresponsiblymaythushelpthemcontinue
toleadahealthylife.
