SuccessfulandUnsuccessfulInterviews

Itisdifficulttoprepareforinterviewswithoutactuallygoingthroughthem.Consideraskingstudentstoanalyzeavideoclipofaninterviewsessiontothinkingeneraltermsofhowtheywouldrespond,thendiscusstheeffectiveandineffectiveelementsoftheinterviews(Exercise12.4AnalyzingaVideoInterview).Considerrunningmockinterviewswithvolunteers,onetotwoquestionsatatime,perhapswiththecommoninterviewquestionsfromthetextbook.Stopaftereachquestiontodiscussthestrengthsandweaknessesoftheresponses,andhowstudentscouldimprovetheirresponses.

ProvideSpecificsinFollow-UpMessages

Studentssometimeshavedifficultywritinggoodfollow-upmessages.Twocommonproblemsare:

Messagesthatsaythankyoubutnothingmore;thoughthisisstillpolite,thewriterhaslostanopportunitytogetherorhiscredentialsbeforetheaudience’seyeonelasttime.

Messagesthatdonotmentionspecificsabouttheinterview.Thistypeofmessageisusuallysogeneralthattheapplicantdoesnotcomethroughasbeinggenuinelyinterested.It’stobeexpectedthatintervieweeswouldsaythattheyenjoyedtheinterviewandarenowevenmoreinterestedinthejob.Forthistobevalid,however,thelettermustfocusonspecificsthathighlighthowtheapplicantcouldbenefitthisparticularorganization.

It’sonlynaturalthatstudentshavedifficultydiscussingthedetailsofaninterviewtheyneverhad.Tocounteractthisproblem,youmaywanttohavestudentsgeneratedetailsabouttheirsupposedinterviewinclassbeforetheybegintowritetheirletter.Thisapproachworksparticularlywellwhenstudentsbasetheirassignmentsonarealjobdescriptionoratleastonahypotheticalopeninginanactualorganization.

Forexample,askstudentstovisualizethephysicalenvironmentoftheorganization.Iftheyweregivenatourinthisorganization,whattypesofthingswouldtheybelikelytosee?Whowouldtheybelikelytomeet,thatis,peoplewithwhattypesofjobs?Whatdotheythinkthattheinterviewerwouldlikeabouttheirskillsandbackground?Whatweakareaswouldtheyhavetocompensateforifapplyingforthisjob?Inaddition,youmighthavestudentsassumethatonenegativethinghappenedduringtheinterviewthatthelettershouldtrytocompensatefororovercome.Studentshavetothinkofthingsthatcouldrealisticallyhappen.
