Thedifferencesinlivingstandardsaroundtheworldarevast.In1993,theaverageAmericanhadanincomeofabout

surprisingly,thislargevariationinaverageincomeisreflectedinvariousmeasuresofthequalityoflife.Changesin

Whatexplainstheselargedifferencesinlivingstandardsamongcountriesandovertime?Theanswerissurprisingly

Thefundamentalrelationshipbetweenproductivityandlivingstandardsissimple,butitsimplicationsare
far-reaching.Ifproductivityistheprimarydeterminantoflivingstandards,otherexplanationsmustbeofsecondary
importance.Forexample,peoplemightthinkthatlaborunionsorminimum-wagelawscontributedtotheriseinliving

Therelationshipbetweenproductivityandlivingstandardsalsohasgreatimplicationsforpublicpolicy.When
