????Westartedtheclimbintheearlyafternoon.Thepathconsistsofstonestepswithroughchainlinkhandrailsinthenarrowestareas(weworeourbicyclingglovesforhandprotection)?￡P(guān)hysically,itismorelikeclimbingthestepsofaskyscraperthantrailsathome.However,thetemperaturewasabout95degreesandtherewasnotmuchshade.Webroughtlotsofwater,includingsomebottlesthatwefrozeandsomeGatoradethatwegotatthefancydepartmentstoreindowntownXian.Thereareplentyofrefreshmentstandsalongthewaywhereyoucanbuybottledwater,theChineseequivalentofGatorade,andotherdrinksorsnacksatapremiumprice.

????Theplanforthedaywastoclimbtheotherfourpeaks,butwereservedtherighttoshortentheroute.ThefirstpartwasasteepclimbtoMiddlePeak.AfterthelowNorthPeak,alltheothersareatroughly20xxmeters.TherewerecrowdsonthewaytoMiddlePeak-mostlyChinesehikersbutwedidseeafewotherwaiguo(foreigners)aswell.

????WevisitedtwoTaoisttemplesenroutetoMiddlePeak.Eachonehadanaltarwithincenseandofferingsoffruit.Thefriendlymonksinvitedustosayaprayerortosendblessingstolovedones.Franacceptedtheirinvitation.Atthefirsttemple,shelitincensesticksandkneltonacushioninfrontofthealtarsayingasilentprayerforoursafejourneytothevarioussummitsofHuaShan(theprayerwasanswered)?￡Atthesecondtemple,shekneltonacushioninfrontofthealtarandsentsilentblessingstoseveralfriendswhoareexperiencingchallengingsituationsintheirlivesatpresent.Aftereachblessing,sheleanedforwardandthemonkstruckadrum.

????Wetookaroutethateventuallybroughtustothemainlinereturningdownfr-omMiddletoNorthPeak.Wewerehappytohaveascendedeachofthefivepeaks(petals)ofFlowerMountain.

????Bycablecar(thelongestinAsia)￡?itwasjust7minutesdowntotheparkentrance.Wecaughtashuttlebusintotown,thentransferredtoabusforXian.

????Ourguidestoldusthatwehadwalkedupanddownatotalof4000stairs!Weweregladthatwedidnothavethisinformationwhenwestarted.Forthreedaysafterreturninghome,oursorelegmusclesinstructedustotaketheelevatortoourfifthfloorapartmentratherthanclimbingthestairs.

????HuaqingPoolissituatedabout35kilometreseastofthecityofXi??an.Historically,theWesternZhoudynastysawtheconstructionoftheLiPalaceonthespot.IntheQindynastyapoolwasbuiltwithstones,andwasgiventhenameLishanTang(theLishanHotSpring).ThesitewasextendedintoapalaceintheHandynasty,andrenamedtheLiPalace(theResortPalace).IntheTangdynasty,LiShimin(EmperorTaiZong)orderedtoconstructtheHotSpringPalace,andEmperorXuanZonghadawalledpalacebuiltaroundLishanMountainintheyearof747.ItwasknownastheHuaqingPalace.ItalsohadthenameHuaqingPoolonaccountofitslocationonthehotsprings.
