symheticallyusingchemicalscomingfrompetrol.Tocreateitfromplastic,instead,researchers
geneticallymodifiedastrainofE.colibacteriasothatitcanmakevanillinfromarawmaterial
usedintheproductionofplasticbottles.
Accordingtotheirresearchpaper,around85%oftheworld'svanillinissynthesizedfrom
chemicalsthatareobtainedfromfossilfuels.That'sbecausedemandforvanillin—whichisused
widelynotonlyinfood,butalsoinbeautyproducts,cleaningproducts,andherbicides—isfar
greaterthansupply.InMadagascar,whichgrows80%oftheworld'snaturalvanilla,pollinating,
