BCai

Lei,

former

vice-president

of

JD

Group,

reveals

how

amyotrophic

lateral

sclerosis

(ALS)diagnosis(診)

set

him

on

the

path

to

find

a

cure.

Born

to

a

farmer’s

family

in

1978,

Cai

has

been

deeply

influenced

by

his

father’s

idea

that“onehas

to

fight

for

himself”.

Since

primary

school,

he

has

been

getting

up

before

5

am

to

run

and

studyEnglish.

At

29,

Cai

became

chief

tax

manager

in

Vanke

Co.

In

2011,

he

joined

JD

Group,

where

heled

his

team

to

develop

the

first

electronic

invoice

(發(fā)票)

in

China.

Wherever

he

worked,

he

alwaystried

his

best

to

create

new

value.

Diagnosed

with

ALS

in

2019,

he

would

have

only

two

to

five

years

to

live.

ALS

is

usuallycaused

by

the

gradual

death

of

motor

neurons

(神經(jīng)元),which

makes

normally

easy

movements

like

drinking

water,

eating,

going

to

the

bathroom,

and

speaking

impossible.

Finally,

patients

willcompletely

rely

on

machines

and

others’

help

to

survive.

So

far,

only

two

medicines

are

available

totreat

ALS,

but

they

can

at

most

extend

patients’life

for

several

months

without

improving

their

livingquality.

To

develop

effective

drugs

is

the

only

way

to

save

ALS

patients.

However,

the

intense

effortrequired,

which

is

unprofitable

for

so

rare

an

illness,

makes

it

a

mission

almost

impossible.

It

usuallytakes

10-15

years

to

complete

the

research

cycle

for

a

new

drug

and

the

cost

is

$1-3

billion.

TakeAlzheimer’s

disease

for

example.

Between

2000

and

2017,

investment

in

new

drugs

for

this

morecommon

disease

was

over

$600

billion,

and

99.6%

of

the

research

on

more

than

300

drugs

failed.

Cai

decided

to

take

matters

into

his

own

hands.

He

started

his

own

medical

technologycompany,

built

his

own

research

team,

and

volunteered

to

try

more

than

30

new

medicines

which

allfailed.

However,

he

has

decided

that

even

if

all

efforts

prove

fruitless,

he

will

continue.

To

shoot

thelast

bullet,

he

has

decided

to

donate

his

brain

and

spinal

cord

for

scientific

research.

He

will

not

diefor

nothing.

A.

Losing

the

ability

to

normally.

B.

Maintaining

a

CThe

book,

Deep

Work,

by

Cal

Newport,

which

is

meant

to

advocate

deep

work,

consists

of

the

philosophical

basis

of

deep

work

and

why

it

works,

and

then

to

teach

you

how

to

lead

a

deep

life

if

you

realize

it

is

a

good

life.Deep

work

refers

to

professional

activities

performed

in

a

state

of

undisturbed

concentration

that

push

your

cognitive

(認(rèn)知的)abilities

to

their

limit.

These

efforts

create

new

value,

improve

yourskilland

are

hard

to

copy.

The

ability

to

perform

deep

work

is

becoming

increasingly

rare

and

at

exactly

the

same

time

it

is

becoming

increasingly

valuable

in

our

economy.

As

a

result,

the

few

who

develop

the

skill,

and

make

it

the

central

part

of

their

working

life,

will

succeed.

A

deep

life

is

a

good

life,

any

way

you

look

at

it.

Who

you

are,

what

you

think,

feel,

and

do,

what

you

love-?is

the

sum

of

what

you

focus

on.Main

elements

of

intentional

practice

of

deep

work

are

identified

as

follows:

your

attention

is

focused

tightly

on

a

specific

skill

you’re

trying

to

improve

or

an

idea

you

are

trying

to

master;you

receive

feedback

so

you

can

correct

your

approach

to

keep

your

attention

exactly

where

it’s

productive.

To

succeed

with

deep

work

you

must

learn

to

feel

comfortable

resisting

disturbing

stimuli.

Since

you

have

a

limited

amount

of

willpower

that

is

decreasing

as

you

use

it,

the

easiest

way

to

consistently

start

deep

work

sessions

is

to

transform

them

into

a

simple

regular

habit.

To

master

the

art

of

deep

work,therefore,

you

must

take

back

control

of

your

time

and

attention

from

the

many

activities

that

attempt

to

steal

them.

The

ability

to

concentrate

is

a

skill

that

gets

valuable

things

done.

If

you’re

struggling

to

activate

your

mind

to

its

fullest

capacity

to

create

things

that

matter,

then

you’ll

discover

depth

generates

a

life

rich

with

productivity

and

meaning.28.

What

What

is

of

about?

A.

The

value

of

creative

efforts.B.

The

significance

of

deep

work.

C.

The

way

to

in

What

is

important

to

the

practice

of

deep

work?

A.

Performing

professional

activities.

B.

Pushing

cognitive

abilities

to

the

limit.

C.

Focusing

your

on

your

Receiving

What

does

the

author

probably

suggest

doing?

A.

Trying

to

join

in

more

activities.

B.

Developing

skills

of

concentration.

C.

Feeling

comfortable

with

disturbance.

D.Spending

more

time

on

valuable

things.

DCuriosity

is

a

familiar

feeling

among

people.

But

as

soon

as

we

examine

that

feeling,

curiosity

reveals

itself

to

be

a

complex

emotion

indeed.

Just

ask

yourself:

Is

curiosity

a

positive

feeling

or

a

negative

feeling?Is

itmore

like

frustrationormore

like

hope?

Is

it

a

painful

reminder

of

what

we

don’t

(yet)

know,

or

an

exciting

signal

towards

what

we

might

soon

discover?

Actually,

curiosity

can

be

all

of

these

things.

But

the

object

of

curiosity’s

desire

is

information.Of

course,

not

all

feelings

of

curiosity

are

the

same.

Curiosity

can

be

more

or

less

pleasurable,

more

or

less

aggravating.

So

what

accounts

for

this

variation?

Once

we

recognize

that

curiosity

has

many

faces,

we

can

consider

what

affects

the

nature

of

our

experience

in

a

given

case.

The

paper

by

Noordewier

does

just

this

for

the

dimension

of

time.

The

researchers

ask:

Is

the

experience

of

curiosity

more

likely

to

be

positive

when

we

expect

that

our

curiosity

will

be

satisfied

sooner

rather

than

later?

To

answer

this

question,

the

researchers

conducted

three

studies

with

over

200

participants.

In

each

study,

the

researchers

first

stimulated

a

state

of

curiosity

by

telling

people

that

they

would

later

watch

a

video

that

contained“something

with

different

shades

of

brown.”Half

the

people

were

told

they

would

watch

the

video

after

a

short

delay

of

only

one

minute,

and

half

were

told

that

there

would

first

be

a

30-minute

delay

during

which

they

would

complete

other

tasks.

The

key

finding

was

that

while

both

groups

reported

equal

levels

of

curiosity,

the

curiosity

was

accompanied

by

more

negative

feelings

for

those

participants

facing

a

long

versus

a

short

delay.

The

finding

shed

light

on

the

two

faces

of

curiosity.

When

our

curiosity

will

not

be

satisfied

anytime

soon,we

focus

on

not

knowing,

on

the

information

gap

itself,

which

is

largely

sick.

But

when

our

curiosity

isabout

to

be

satisfied,

we

focus

on

almost

knowing,

or

the

expected

settlement,

which

is

a

morepositive

experience.

On

this

view,

the

two

faces

of

curiosity

reflect

different

mixtures

of

not

knowing

versus

almost

knowing.

32.

Why

do

people

have

curiosity?

A.

To

get

pleasure.B.

To

become

positive.

C.

To

get

information.D.To

become

hopeful.

33.

What

does

the

underlined

word

"aggravating"

in

paragraph

2

mean?

A.Joyful.B.Unpleasant.C.Exciting.D.Frightening.

34.Why

did

researchers

conduct

the

experiment?

A.

To

satisfy

the

curiosity

of

the

public.

B.

To

prove

their

previous

assumptions.

C.

To

recognize

the

different

faces

of

curiosity.

D.

To

study

how

time

affects

curiosity

experience.

What

is

the

main

idea

of

the

text?Curiosity

is

a

common

emotion.

B.

Curiosity

is

a

positive

motivator.

C.

Curiosity

can

be

a

positive

or

Gesture(手勢)gets

its

power

in

part

from

the

fact

that

it

is

rarely

noticed

by

the

speaker

or

listener,

yet

it

is

easily

understood

and

included

in

our

conversations.36Here

are

some

tips

that

can

help

you

take

advantage

of

gesture.

Encourage

gesture

in

your

children,studentsandanyoneyouaretryingtoteach.This

will

help

them

understand

the

material

you

are

going

to

explain.37That

is

important

because

being

able

to

apply

what

we

learn

is

essential

to

acquiring

new

knowledge.

Pay

attention

to

other

people’s

gestures.

These

offer

a

window

into

the

thoughts

that

speakers

havebut

don’t

express

in

their

words.

These

thoughts

are

often

at

the

cutting-edge

of

their

knowledge

or

address

issues

that

are

uppermost

in

their

minds.38

39Those

you

talk

to

will

pay

attention

to

your

gesturesalthough

often

unknowingly.

So

choose

them

wisely.

Remember,

gestures

can

reveal

what

you

might

want

to

hide.

And

if

you

are

questioning

someone,

be

aware

that

a

gesture

may

unavoidably

influence

them

to

tell

you

what

you

want

to

hear

rather

than

give

their

own

unbiased(無偏見的)answer.

Gesture

more

when

you

speak.

It

will

help

you

learn

and

understand,

and

also

think

in

a

more

abstract(抽象的)way.

If

you

gesture

while

talking,

you

will

remember

more

of

what

you

have

said.40What’s

more,

when

you

gesture,

the

people

around

you

tend

to

do

so

too.

This

can

give

you

a

way

of

seeing

what

others

are

thinking

but

not

saying.

A.

People

in

all

cultures

gesture.

B.

The

challenge

is

to

use

it

to

good

effect.

C.

Let

your

gestures

speak

for

you

when

necessary.

D.

Be

careful

that

your

gestures

say

what

Maybe

I

his

Seeing

the

well-used

watercolor

paints

and

uniquely

designed

paintbrush,

I

realized

Charles

was

the

painter.

He

painted

those

pictures

with

his

mouth!

I

busied

myself

with

getting

the

water

and

paints

ready,

wondering

how

this

was

all

going

to

work.

Very

simply,

and

very

gracefully,

as

it

turned

out.

Charles

entrusted

me

to

dip

the

brush

into

the

paints,

placing

the

paintbrush

into

his

mouth

and

drawing

on

a

paper

about

a

foot

away

from

his

face.

As

Charles

couldn’t

speak

when

he

painted,

I

just

stood

silently

beside,

appreciating

the

whole

process

and

helping

him

change

colors

when

necessary.

From

that

day

on,

we

spent

every

Wednesday

evening

together,

working

on

a

fresh

piece.

It

actually

became

a

weekly

routine

that

I

looked

forward

to.

Our

relationship

became

much

closer.

More

importantly,

Charles’

passion

for

painting

blew

me

away.

Instead

of

looking

out

of

the

window

at

a

world

he

would

never

again

be

a

part

of,

he

asked

someone

to

tape

his

paintings

up

because

that

made

him

happy

and

reminded

him

of

something

he

loved.

Charles

had

given

me

a

wonderful

gift,

which

is

the

joy

of

gratitude,

even

for

seemingly

ordinary

things. IalsoinvitedMary,butsheisoutoftown.M:Whatapity!Iwashopingshewouldcome.Text2M:IfIwereyou,I’djustwalktowork.Itwouldtakeyouabout20minutes.Ridingabikeisagoodchoice,too.W:Iagree.Butthisweekmyhusbandisawayonbusiness,soIhavetodrivemykidstoschoolbeforeIgotowork.I’mpressedfortime,youknow.Text3W:It’s8:30,Dave,andyou’regoingtobelateforthemeeting.M:Oh,my!Ijusthavehalfanhourleft.Ican’tbelieveIsleptfor10hours.Text4M:Hi,Helen.Whereareyouoffto?W:Tothelibrary.I’vegotahistorypaperduenextweek,andneedtodosomereading.Text5W:Thankgoodness!You'restillhere.M:What’sup?W:Ineedyoursignatureforthisdocument.It’surgent.Text6W:Areyo
