INTRODUCTION

1Scope

1.1Theserequirementscoverelectricallyheatedblankets,comforters,quilts,sheets,mattresspads,mattresses,footwarmers,throwblanketsandsimilarbedding.

1.2TheseproductsareforuseinaccordancewiththeNationalElectricalCode,ANSI/NFPA70,onsingle-phasealternating-currentsupplycircuitsoperatingatanominalpotentialof110to120Vac.

1.3Allbeddingiscord-connectedandissuppliedwitheitheraswitchoroneortwouser-adjustabletemperature-controlunits.Beddingmaybethermostaticallycontrolled.

1.4Beddingintendedforconnectiontootherthananominal120Vacsupplyvoltage,andbeddingforusewithwaterbeds,mechanicalbedsandthelike,aretobesubjecttoadditionalinvestigation,with

considerationgiventotheirintendeduse.

2Components

2.1Acomponentofaproductcoveredbythisstandardshall:

a)Complywiththerequirementsforthatcomponentasindicatedinthisstandard;

b)Beusedinaccordancewithitsrating(s)establishedfortheintendedconditionsofuse;c)Beusedwithinitsestablisheduselimitationsorconditionsofacceptability;

d)Additionallycomplywiththeapplicablerequirementsofthisendproductstandard;ande)Notcontainmercury.

Specificcomponentsareincompleteinconstructionfeaturesorrestrictedinperformancecapabilities.Suchcomponentsareintendedforuseonlyunderlimitedconditions,suchascertaintemperaturesnotexceedingspecifiedlimits,andshallbeusedonlyunderthosespecificconditions.

ExceptionNo.1:Acomponentofaproductcoveredbythisstandardisnotrequiredtocomplywithaspecificcomponentrequirementthat:

a)Involvesafeatureorcharacteristicnotrequiredintheapplicationofthecomponentintheproduct;

b)Issupersededbyarequirementinthisstandard;or

c)Isseparatelyinvestigatedwhenformingpartofanothercomponent,providedthecomponentisusedwithinitsestablishedratingsandlimitations.

3)Anyuselimitationsoftheothercomponentstandardisidentifiedandappropriatelyaccommodatedintheenduseapplication.Forexample,acomponentusedinahouseholdapplication,butintendedforindustrialuseandcomplyingwiththerelevantcomponentstandardmayassumeuserexpertisenotcommoninhouseholdapplications.

2.2Acomponentthatisalsointendedtoperformotherfunctions,suchasovercurrentprotection,ground-faultcircuit-interruption,surgesuppression,anyothersimilarfunctions,oranycombinationthereof,shallcomplyadditionallywiththerequirementsoftheapplicablestandard(s)thatcoverdevicesthatprovidethosefunctions.

Exception:Wheretheseotherfunctionsarenotrequiredfortheapplicationandnotidentifiedaspartofmarkings,instructions,orpackagingfortheappliance,theadditionalcomponentstandard(s)neednotbeapplied.

2.3Acomponentnotanticipatedbytherequirementsofthisstandard,notspecificallycoveredbythecomponentstandardsidentifiedinthisstandard,andthatinvolvesapotentialriskofelectricshock,fire,orpersonalinjury,shallbeadditionallyinvestigatedinaccordancewiththeapplicablestandard.

2.4Withregardtoacomponentbeingadditionallyinvestigated,referencetoconstructionandperformancerequirementsinanotherendproductstandardisappropriatewherethatstandardanticipatesnormalandabnormaluseconditionsconsistentwiththeapplicationofthisstandard.

2.5MaterialsusedinaClass105(A)insulationsystemshallcomplywiththeNormalTemperatureTest,Section19.MaterialsusedinaninsulationsystemthatoperatesaboveClass105(A)temperaturesshalcomplywiththeStandardforSystemsofInsulatingMaterials-General,UL1446.

5.1ForthepurposesofthisStandard,thefollowingdefinitionapplies.

5.2CLASS2SUPPLY-AsecondarycircuitsuppliedbyaClass2powersupplythatcomplieswiththeStandardforClass2PowerUnits,UL1310.

5.3LOW-VOLTAGECIRCUIT-Acircuitinvolvingapotentialofnotmorethan30voltsandsuppliedbyaprimarybattery,byastandardClass2transformer,orbyacombinationofatransformerandafixedimpedancethat,asaunit,complieswithalltheperformancerequirementsforaClass2transformer.Acircuitderivedfromaline-voltagecircuitbyconnectingresistanceinserieswiththesupplycircuitasa

meansoflimitingthevoltageandcurrentisnotconsideredtobealow-voltagecircuit.

5.4SEMICONDUCTORHEATERWIRE-Aheatingelementconsistingoftwoconductorsseparatedbyaconductivematerialwhichhasarapidnon-linearincreaseinresistancewhenthetemperatureisraisedthroughaparticularrange.

5.5THROWBLANKET-Anelectricblanketintendedforuseinindoorlocationsbutnotspecificallyforuseonlyonbeds.Electricthrowblanketsaretypicallysmallerinoverallsizethanblanketsintendedforuseonbeds.Thelengthistypicallylessthan75inches(109.5cm)and/orthewidthistypicallylessthan38inches(96.5cm).

CONSTRUCTION

6CoveringofElectricalParts

6.1Exceptfortheconnectorattachedtothebedding,allelectricalpartsofthebeddingshallbeenclosedinashellorothercoveringofafabricinwhichtherearenoopenings.Allstuffing,padding,springs,andsimilarnonelectricalcomponentsofbeddingshallbeoutsidethiscoveringandshallnotbedetrimentaltothecoveringoritselectricalcontents.

6.2Allseamsinthefabricenclosingelectricalpartsshallbestronglystitchedorotherwiseequivalentlysecured.

7Insulation

7.1Electricalinsulationistobeconsideredwithrespecttoitsacceptabilityfortheparticularapplication.Ifitisnecessarytoinvestigateamaterialtodeterminewhetheritisacceptable,considerationistobegiventoitsmechanicalstrength,dielectricproperties,insulationresistance,heat-resistantqualities,thedegreetowhichitisenclosedorprotected,andanyotherfeatureshavingabearingontheriskoffire,electricshock,andinjurytopersonsinvolved,inconjunctionwithconditionsofactualservice.Allofthesefactorsaretobeconsideredwithrespecttothermalaging.

7.2Ordinaryvulcanizedfibermaybeusedforinsulatingbushings,washers,separators,andbarriersbutnotasthesolesupportforuninsulatedlivepartswhereshrinkage,currentleakage,orwarpagemayintroduceariskoffireorelectricshock.Thermoplasticmaterialsarenotconsideredtobeacceptableforthesolesupportofuninsulatedliveparts,unlesstheyhavebeenfoundtohavethenecessarystrengthandrigidity,resistancetoheat,resistancetoflamepropagation,dielectricproperties,andotherpropertiesacceptablefortheapplication.Allofthesefactorsaretobeconsideredwithrespecttothermalaging.

7.3Aninsulatinglinershallbeacceptableforthepurpose.Vulcanizedfiberorasimilarmaterialemployedwherespacingswouldotherwisebeunacceptableshallbe1/32inch(0.8mm)thickorthicker,andshallbesolocatedorofsuchmaterialthatitcannotbeadverselyaffectedbyarcing.However,164inch(0.4mm)orthickervulcanizedfiberisacceptableinconjunctionwithanadditionalairspacingof50percentormoreofthespacingrequiredforairalone.Barriersshallbesecuredinplacebyameansotherthanfrictionbetweensurfaces.Theelasticityoftubingshallnotbedependedupontoholdthetubinginplace.

7.4Theheatingelementshallbeelectricallyinsulatedforitsentirelengthsothatitisnotincontactwiththeshellorothercoveringfabricatanypoint.Theinsulatedheatingelementshallbeappliance-wiringmaterialacceptablefortheapplication.Theinsulatedheatingelementshallbesosecuredinpositionthatthereisnounduestressonitduringuse,handling,andcleaningofthebedding.Atleast9inches(229mm)ofthefootofablanket,sheet,quiltorcomforterthatcanbetuckedinduringnormaluseshallbedevoidofallelectricalpartsotherthanthemalehalfofthebeddingconnectorandtheportionofthe

Exception:Beddingconstructedwithself-limitingsemiconductorheaterwireisabletobeprovidedwithelectricalpartstotheperimeterofthebedding.

7.5Heaterwire,includingsemiconductorheaterwire,shallcomplywiththeReferenceStandardforElectricalWires,Cables,andFlexibleCords,UL1581.Semiconductorheaterwireshalladditionallycomplywiththerequirementsforthermistor-typedevices,UL1434.

7.6Flexuralreliefshallbeprovidedfortheconductorsthatexitthemale-connectorbodyofablanketsheet,quilt,orcomforter.

7.7Eachthermostatandotherlivepartwithintheshellorothercoveringfabricshallnothaveanysharpedgesandshallbeelectricallyinsulatedwithinsulatingtubingacceptableforthevoltageandtemperatureinvolved.Theinsulationoneachpartshallbe:

a)Bonded,awatertightsealisrequired,totheinsulationontheheatingelementorotherwiringconnectedtothepart;and

b)Atleastasthickatthebondandelsewhereastheinsulationontheheatingelementorotherwiringconnectedtothepart.

7.8Aspliceinwiringwithinathermostatshallbeinsulatedifpermanenceofspacingfromthesplicetoothermetalpartsofthethermostatisnotprovided.

7.9PolymericelectricalinsulatingmaterialsandenclosuresshallcomplywiththeapplicablerequirementsoftheStandardforPolymericMaterials-UseinElectricalEquipmentEvaluations,UL746C.

7.10Therequirementsforsupplementalinsulation(e.g.tape,sleevingortubing)arenotspecifiedunlesstheinsulationordeviceisrequiredtofulfll7.1-7.4oraperformancerequirementofthisstandard.Insuchcases:

a)InsulatingtapeshallcomplywiththeStandardforPolyvinylChloride,Polyethylene,andRubberInsulatingTape,UL510;

b)SleevingshallcomplywiththeStandardforCoatedElectricalSleeving,UL1441;

c)TubingshallcomplywiththeStandardforExtrudedInsulatingTubing,UL224.

8Spacings

8.1Exceptasindicatedin8.2-8.4,oversurfaceandthrough-airspacingsnosmallerthan1/16inch(1.6

mm)shallbemaintainedfromuninsulatedlivepartsto:a)Uninsulatedlivepartsofoppositepolarity;andb)Accessiblemetalparts.

Exception:Thespacingsmaybelessthanspecifiedin8.1ifincompliancewiththeStandardforInsulationCoordinationIncludingClearancesandCreepageDistancesforElectricalEquipmentUL840.Thefollowingparametersshallbeusedunlessthemicroenvironmentisfurtherevaluatedandfoundtocomplywithotherparameters:

a)OvervoltageshallbeIl;

b)PollutionDegreeshallbe2;andREPRCc)MaterialGrouplHb.DISTRIB

IfacircuitemploysavoltagelimitingdeviceforapplicationoftherequirementsintheStandardforInsulationCoordinationIncludingClearancesandCreepageDistancesforElectricalEquipmentUL840,thedeviceshallcomplywiththeStandardforSurgeProtectiveDevices,UL1449.

8.2Withinathermostat,exceptatthecontacts,thespacingsbetweenuninsulatedlivepartsonoppositesidesofthecontactsshallnotbelessthan1/32inch(0.8mm)throughairand3/64inch(1.2mm)overthesurfaceofinsulatingmaterial.

8.3Thespacingsmentionedin8.1and8.2donotapplytotheinherentspacingsofacomponent.Suchspacingsaretobeconsideredundertherequirementsforthecomponentinquestion.

8.4Atclosed-inpointsonly,suchasthescrew-and-washerconstructionofaninsulatedterminalmountedinmetal,aspacingof3/64inch(1.2mm)isacceptable.

9TemperatureLimitation

9.1Beddingshallbeprovidedwithmeanstoprecludetheattainmentofunacceptabletemperatures,see

19.1.1-19.1.3and31.1.1,onanypartofthebedding.

9.2Meanstoaverttheattainmentofunacceptabletemperaturesmaybeinherentintheconstructionofbedding-suchasalow-wattageheatingelement-thusnecessitatingnothermostatsorexternalcontrol.

9.3Thermostatsshallbedurable,reliable,uniforminoperation,andsufficientlysensitivefortheirintendeduseasdeterminedbycompliancewithThermostatsinBedding,Section37,andotherapplicablerequirements.

9.4Ifproperperformanceofathermostatdependsupontheintegrityofaclosedchamber,theconstructionshallprecludemoistureleaks,whichmayaffecttheuniformityandreliabilityofoperation.

9.5Athermostatinthebeddingshallnotbeadjustablebytheuserofthebeddingandshallbecoveredorsealedtoprecludetheentranceofdirtandlint.

9.6Materialsemployedinathermostatshallnotbeaffectedadverselybyanyoperatingconditionspresentedbythetestsdescribedintheserequirements.

9.7Platedsteel,exceptthatthebimetalneednotbeplated,maybeusedforacurrent-carryingpartinathermostatprovidedthatthepartisprotectedbysupplementarymeans(suchassealedsleeving)against

anyconditionsinvolvingmoisturetowhichthethermostatmaybesubjectedduringuseandcleaningofthebedding.

9.8Ifthermostatsorothertypesofdiscretetemperaturesensingdevicesareusedinthebeddingitself,theyshallbesufficientinnumberinaccordancewith9.10,andshallbeappropriatelylocatedtoenablethebeddingtocomplywith9.9,19.1.1-19.1.3,31.1.1,31.4.1-31.4.3,31.6.1-31.6.4,31.6.6,and31.6.7.Nosectionoftheheatingelementshallbeinserieswithfewerthantwodiscretesensingdeviceswhenthermostatsorothertypesofdiscretesensingdevicesareemployed.

9.9Compliancewiththerequirementin9.8istobedeterminedbyappropriatetestingthat,inthecaseofasheet,overblanket,quilt,orcomforter,istoincludethebunchingtestdescribedin31.6.1-31.6.4,31.6.6and31.6.7.

9.10Ablanket,sheet,quilt,orcomforterincorporatingdiscretesensingdevicesandintendedforuseon

atwin,double,queenorking-sizebedshallcomplywitheachofthefollowing:DFCRFURTHER

b)Thetoprowofdiscretesensingdevicesinasizeintendedforatwinbed,inasizeintendedforadoubleorqueenbed,andineachhalfofasizeintendedforaking-sizebedistobesecuredagainstmigrationduringuse,handling,andcleaningoftheproduct.
