George’sFeast

George’smotherwasverypoor.Insteadofhavingbright,blazing(熊熊燃燒的)firesinwinter,shehad

nothingtoburnbutdrysticks,whichGeorgepickedupfromunderthetreesandhedges.

OnefinedayinJuly,shesentGeorgetothewoods,whichwereabouttwomilesfromthevillageinwhichshe

lived.Hewastostaythereallday,togetasmuchwoodashecouldcollect.

Itwasabright,sunnyday,andGeorgeworkedveryhardsothatbythetimethesunwashigh,hewashot,and

wishedforacoolplacewherehemightrestforawhileandeathisdinner.

Whilehehuntedaroundthebankofthestream,hesawamongthemoss(苔蘚)somefinewildstrawberries,

whichwereabrightredwithripeness(成熟).

“Howgoodthesewillbewithmybreadandbutter!”thoughtGeorge.Lining(墊在……里)hislittlecapwith

leaves.hesettoworkeagerly(急切地)togatherallhecouldfind,andthenseatedhimselfbythebrook.

Itwasapleasantplace,andGeorgefelthappyandcontented.Hethoughthowmuchhismotherwouldliketo

seehimthere,andtobethereherselfinsteadofinherdark,closeroominthevillage.Ceorgethoughtofallthisand

justashewasliftingthefirststrawberrytohismouth,hesaidtohimself,“HowmuchMomwouldlikethese!”He

stoppedandputthestrawberrybackagain.

“ShallIsavethemforher?”saidGeorge,thinkinghowmuchtheywouldrefreshhissickmother,yetstill

lookingatthemwithalongingeye.“Iwilleathalfandtaketheotherhalftoher,”saidheatlastandhedivided

themintotwopiles.Buteachpilelookedsosmallthatheputthemtogetheragain.

“Iwillonlytasteone,”thoughthe;but,asheagainliftedittohismouth,hesawthathehadtakenthefinest,

andheputitback.“Iwillkeepthemallforher,”saidhe,andhecoveredthemupnicelytillheshouldgohome.

ThenitwasLaborDay,youknow,theextradayoffthatKaylawassolookingforwardto.ButKaylawasawakened

earlythatmorningbyherdad.HetoldKaylathatincelebrationofLaborDay,thefamilywoulddosomelabour

work.Kaylacouldn’tbelieveit.Thiswasaholiday!Adaywhenshewassupposedtobeenjoyingfreshlysqueezed

lemonadewhileplayinginhertreehouse.AsKaylawipedhereyes,shebegantowonderifthiswasjustabad

dream.

“Kayla,yourbreakfastisready.Wehavealotofworktodotoday.Let’sgetamoveon,”saidKayla’smom.

Asshesatdownatthekitchentable,Kaylaaskedherparents,“Areyouseriousaboutworkingtoday?Isn’tLabor
