Ive been studying 16 for over 30 years, says Mihaly. My 17 in the subject came from my own experience as a child during World War II, when I saw many adults 18 by the terrible events. But there were always a few who 19 their courage, helped others, and were able to give a sense of 20 and meaning to their lives. But often their free time is also wasted. Many people are used to doing 26 things watching television, for example without using any skills. 27 , life goes past in a series of boring experiences. But it doesnt have to be this way. The professor has found that people are 28 when they get into something he calls flow. When people get involved in a task that they have chosen, and which is well-defined and challenging, they 29 flow,a state where they dont notice time passing. They also experience enjoyment. Professor Mihaly makes a contrast 30 enjoyment and pleasure. I used to think they were the same thing but theyre not! 31 is a big bowl of ice cream, or taking a hot bath on a cold day nothing bad at all! But enjoyment is about doing something and 32 something. She loved it so much that she saved her money for three years to buy her first small sailing boat. When she was 18, she sailed alone around Britain and won the Young Sailor of the Year award. But Ellen really became famous in 2001. Aged only 24, she was one of only two women who entered the Vendee Globe round the world solo race, which lasts 100 days. Despite many problems, she came second in the race out of 24 competitors and she was given a heroines welcome when she returned. Ambition and determination have always been a big part of Ellens personality. When she was younger, she lived in a kind of hut for three years while she was trying to get sponsorship to compete in a transatlantic race. Then she took a one-way ticket to France, bought a tiny seven metre Classe Mini yacht, slept under it while she was repairing it, and then she raced it 4,000 kilometres across the Atlantic in 1997, alone for 33 days. Ellen has had to learn many things, because sailing single-handed means that she has to be her own captain, electrician, sailmaker, engineer, doctor, journalist, cameraman and cook. She also has to be very fit, and because of the dangers of sleeping for long periods of time when shes in the middle of the ocean, she has trained herself to sleep for about 20 minutes a time. And she needs courage. Once, in the middle of the ocean, she had to climb the mast of her boat to repair the sails at four oclock in the morning, and with 100 kph winds blowing around her. It took her many hours to make the repairs; Ellen says: I was exhausted when I came down. Its hard to describe how it feels to be up there. Its like trying to hold onto a big pole, which for me is just too big to get my arms around, with someone kicking you all the time and trying to shake you off. But in her diary, Ellen also describe moments which make it all worthwhile: A beautiful sunrise started the day, with black clouds slowly lit by the bright yellow sun. I have a very strong feeling of pleasure, being out here on the ocean and having the chance to live this. I just feel lucky to be here.36. Ellen repaired the sails by herselfBLionel Messi became a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador in March 2010. What does that mean, you ask? Read and find out!In the 1950s, the United Nations had an idea: Why not use celebrities to help promote childrens rights? So they created the idea of UNICEF (the UN childrens fund) ambassadors. Ever since then, hundreds of sports, music and film stars have been seen spreading the word for the international peace organization at photo calls all over the world.A lot of stars are brought in independently by the various UN agencies. The UN Development Programme uses Ronaldo, the Brazilian footballer, to draw peoples attention to poor children. And the refugee (難民)agency UNHCR uses Angelina Jolie to focus on people made homeless because of war. These days, Angelina is probably as famous for her humanitarian work as she is for her acting! But perhaps the agency most represented by the stars is UNICEF. There are lots of stars who are Goodwill Ambassadors for UNICEF: for example, footballer David Beckham, singer Shakira and actor Susan Sarandon. There are also celebrities used to promote one-off projects every now and then: pop singer Robbie Williams has given several concerts for UNICEF even though he isnt Goodwill Ambassador. The UN has got offices in more than 200 countries, so of course its important that they are represented by an international mix of celebrities. And some of their most important stars, like West African singer, Angelique Kidjo, arent exactly household names in many parts of the world. They have to be very careful to choose the right people. UNICEF looks for celebrities who havent just made it big, but who are also probably going to stay famous for quite a few years to come. We cant have someone who has just enjoyed success for a few minutes and then disappeared, a spokeswoman said. In the same way, the star has to want to do more than just look caring in front of the camera. Our celebrities do it because they really care about children, says the spokeswoman. They should have the power to draw the cameras but without wanting the attention for themselves. So, now you know thats what Goodwill Ambassadors do!40. UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador is intended for _ .A. people who help poor children around the worldB. footballers who can play as well as MessiC. celebrities who spread the name of UNICEF worldwideD. celebrities who care about childrens rights41. Angelina Jolie is famous for _ .A. being an ambassador of UNICEF B. drawing peoples attention to poor childrenC. raising money for good causes D. performing well in many films42. Angelique Kidjo is selected to represent UNICEF because _ .A. she is more famous than Susan Sarandon B. she is a world-known singerC. she is popular in West AfricaD. she did a lot to help poor childrenCMost people who move to a foreign country or culture may go through some form of culture shock, and its degree is determined bythe differences between cultures, the anxiety to adapt to a new culture and the familiarity with the new culture, etc. If you go, for example, to a culture that is far different from your own, youre likely to experience culture shock more sharply than those who move to a new culture knowing the language and the custom of it. It is important to understand and learn how to deal with culture shock if you are to adapt successfully to your new homes culture. There are four general stages of cultural adjustment, and being aware of them helps you understand that culture shock wont last long. It is just a process you are going through rather than a constant situation. The first stage is usually referred to as the “honeymoon stage”. Upon arriving in a new environment, youll be interested in the new culture, everything will seem thrilling and everyone will seem friendly and helpful. During this stage you are merely taking in these impressions passively. But it isnt long before the honeymoon stage gives way to the second stage “the withdrawal stage”. The excitement you felt before is gone and problems arise. The language is hard to learn, people are unusual and unpredictable, friends are hard to make, and simple things like shopping and going to the bank are challenges. It is at this stage that you are likely to feel anxious and homesick, and you will probably find yourself complaining about the new culture or country. This is the stage called “culture shock”.At some point, if you can manage it well, youll begin the transition into the next stage, “the recovery stage”, in which youll feel more confident functioning in the new culture. Customs and traditions are clearer and easier to understand. At this stage, youll deal with new challenges with humor rather than anxiety.43. According to the passage, culture shock can be _.A.reduced by learning the language alone B. dealt with more easily for some people C. avoided by knowing adjustment stages D. got rid of by learning just the custom44. The “honeymoon” stage probably refers to_.A. the first month after the wedding B. the holiday for a newly-married coupleC. the stage of adaptation D. the period of excitement45. What would be probably discussed in the paragraph that follows?A. Results of culture shock. B. The 4th stage of cultural adjustment.C. Preparations for a new culture.D. Challenges in a new country. Of the many unpleasant emotions we can experience, fear may top the list. 46 . Fear can also keep us from pursuing the things in life that really matter - like following our dreams, and developing important relationships. I have some ideas, though, of how to be free from fear.l Experience fear.I used to be very afraid of speaking in front of people. I would get sweaty palms and my stomach would be so tied up that I wouldnt be able to eat. However, each time I spoke, I noticed afterwards that it wasnt that bad. Things I fear are never as bad in reality as I make them out in my mind. 47 .l Create space. The first and most important step to being fearless is to create some space between ourselves and the emotion of fear. This isnt accomplished by ignoring the fear, or trying to talk ourselves out of it. 48 . In fact, a recent research shows that by simply admitting the emotion we actually begin to reverse the fight or flight(逃避) response in the body.l Control the breath and feel the fear.Once we acknowledge the presence of fear, the second step is to control the breathing so that it becomes slower and gentler. We try to make the breath just a little bit longer, and feel how fear manifests(展現(xiàn)) in the body. 49 . With practice, we can create enough space between us and the emotion of fear so that were able to replace a fearful thought with a positive one. 50 . For instance, before I get up to speak in front of a group of people, I imagine that the audience is positively impressed by what I say and that I manage to complete the speech successfully.A. Space is created only when we can honestly acknowledge that fear exists.B. We can imagine a positive outcome for whatever were about to do.C. Fear, if left uncontrolled, can even destroy our life.D. So one way to get rid of fear is to simply push ourselves to do things that we fear.E. When we can see a positive outcome in our mind, fear no longer holds us back.F. But fear is more than just physically unpleasant. G. As we pay attention to the physical symptoms of fear, we can see fear objectively.
