This language that resembles English is called Singaporean English or Singlish. The New York times calls Singlish a “patchwork” because Singapore consists of migrants(移民)from several countries including China, India and Malaysia, and they all speak their own versions of “English”.“Everyone who speaks it shapes it,” wrote the newspaper. For example, in Singapore, you can easily recognize influences from Chinese, including vocabulary such as “meesiam” and “da bao”. Sentence structures like “toilet where” also come from Chinese.Interesting and diverse as it may seem, the trend for Singlish is worrying Singapores government. It is concerned that the dialect is lowering the countrys English standard and may affect its relationship with visitors. It even started the Speak Good English Movement.Unfortunately, the problem was not solved. Instead, Singlish has boomed, especially among young people who think of it as a sign of being cool and a way of identifying themselves as Singaporeans. But this does not mean that standard English is being abandoned by young people. In fact, they are much more capable than the government gives them credit for they can speak both.“We are a nation good at code switching we know that the way we speak to friends or drivers must be different from how we present ourselves in the boardroom or at school,” wrote Cheryl, a Singaporean author, in Time magazine. “To actively urge us to give up a language that speaks to the very heart of who we are, that so beautifully represents the melting pot of the Chinese, Indians, Malaysians and Eurasians that we are, is short-sighted surely.”1. Why does Singapore have many different versions of English?A It is made up of migrants.B It is highly westernized.C It is influenced by Chinese.D It is affected by official languages.2. What is the purpose of starting the Speak Good English Movement?A To stop the new trend.B To better the relationship.C To keep the English standard.D To give the government credit.3. What can we learn from what Cheryl said?A Different people speak different styles of Singlish.B Singlish is a more beautiful language than others.C People speak Singlish only to friends and drivers.D People can use Singlish to express themselves well.BCareers in zoology are extremely varied and unique, and can provide incredible learning and work opportunities for anyone devoted to animal studies and welfare. Zoology, or the study of animals, is a wide field with many specialties, including research, conservation, veterinary(獸醫(yī)的) medicine, and the care of animals. For people with a love of animals and some training, dreams of careers in zoology may come true. Some careers in zoology focus on research and scientific studies. These careers may allow those with a good theoretical science background to develop and run studies that improve peoples understanding of the animal world. Research in zoology can help create safer and more effective products for animals or can teach humans more about animal behaviour in order to aid in conservation, breeding programmes, and habitat preservation.Careers in zoology that focus on conservation attach great importance to the continued survival and increased protection of animal species. Conservationists may work with political groups or governments to help make laws to protect and preserve animals, or may work in the fields gathering information on potential threats to the health of global ecosystems. Some conservationists work in educational fields, trying to improve human efforts to save animals from extinction.Animals are subject to illness and injury, and some careers in zoology help to create a safe, stable animal population. Veterinary medicine is an important specialty field, and may take several years of intensive training to qualify as a certified veterinarian. While many veterinarians focus on the small-animal practice of domestic pets, vets in rural areas often work with large farm animals and more adventurous veterinarians may work with exotic species in zoos and wildlife preserves.Humans love to observe animals, and modern-day zoos and wildlife preserves help meet that interest while providing facilities to assist with conservation programmes. Zoology careers in zoos can range from overseeing breeding programmes, to creating the proper diet for a deer, to cleaning the tigers cage. Many volunteer and entry-level jobs are available for people who love animals.4. What is the purpose of researching on animals in zoology?A To help governments make laws.B To improve researchers scientific knowledge.C To create safe and effective products for humans.D To educate people to protect animals.5. What can careers in zoology that focus on veterinary medicine help?A Better understand animals.B Protect the animals health.C Clean the animals cages.D Increase the number of animals.6. What does the passage mainly present?A Volunteers passion for zoology.B A new idea of careers in zoology.C Different types of careers in zoology.D Effective measures of animal protection.CWhen my daughter Sally was five, I bought Grimms Fairy Tales and read “Snow White ” to her one night. At the end of the original Grimm tale, Snow Whites stepmother is made to put on red-hot iron shoes and dance until she falls down dead. This came as something of a shock. I always thought fairy tales had happy endings. And I didnt want my five-year-old daughter going to sleep thinking: “Thank goodness they tortured (折磨) that old woman to death.” Thats when I decided to write fairy tales. In the years that followed, I wrote tales non-stop and read them to Sally at bedtime. The Corn Dolly was based on a child who was always complaining; The Silly King was just a silly story Sally loved; I wrote The Witch and The Rainbow Cat for Sally because of her enormous appetite for stories about witches while Dr Bonocoluss Devil is a new version of the Faust legend. Nicobobinus, however, was different. I wrote this book when Sally was older and took up all things girls have to dowhos friends with who, who suck a sticker on the back of whose boyfriend, or whatever thing she felt funny.Nicobobinus, a boy who could do anything, came out of my desire for a more innocent world. He lived a long time ago, in a city called Venice. Only his best friend, Rosie, knew he could, and nobody took any notice of anything Rosie said, because she was always having wild ideas anyway. Nicobobinus was so different that it turned out to be an instant hit. The Times called me “an author setting out to rival the classic fairy tales”. I asked Sally what she thought of Nicobobinus. She said it was her favourite.7. What led the writer to start writing fairy tales for his daughter?A The frightening ends of the past fairy tales.B His daughters strong interest in fairy tales.C His desire to let his daughter know more stories.D His attempt to fill his daughters bedtime with something.8. We can infer from the third paragraph that the writer_.A was a very productive fairy tale writerB based all his stories on some old legendsC never described witches in his fairy talesD created his stories out of his own interest9. When creating Nicobobinus, the first thing the writer considered was _.A what stories the publisher wanted to getB the changes of his daughters interestsC the ways to keep his daughter innocentD the difference of the story from other stories10. The underlined word “rival” in the last paragraph can be replaced by _.A followB exploreC challengeD recommend第二節(jié):(共5小題,每小題2分,滿分10分)根據(jù)短文內(nèi)容,從短文后的選項中選出能填入空白處的最佳選項。選項中的兩項為多途選項。(注:選E 涂AB ; 選F涂AC; 選G涂AD)Test anxiety can be a real problem if youre so stressed out over a test that you cant get past the nervousness to focus on the test questions and do your best work. Feeling ready to meet the challenge can keep test anxiety at a manageable level.Be prepared. Some students think that going to class is all it takes to do well on tests. 11 You will find your test anxiety eases when you start to study more regularly. The reason is that the more you know the material, the more confident youll feel. Having confidence going into a test means you expect to do well.Watch what youre thinking. If expecting to do well on a text can help you relax, what about if you expect that you wont do well? 12 They can contribute to your anxiety. Your teacher or your school guidance counselor(顧問)can be good people to talk to.Take care of yourself. For some people, this might mean learning a simple breathing exercise. Practise breathing exercise regularly when you feel stressed. 15 Then you can calm yourself down and get centred.A Ask for help.B Learn to praise yourself.C This helps your body receive a signal to relax.D But good study habits and skills are more important.E So its time to regard small failures as valuable experiences.F Then you will become more interested in asking questions.G You may send yourself some negative messages about the test. Madison Williams was studying in her bedroom when the door burst open. Every summer she and her brother Jamal came to stay with their grandmother for the month of July.It was a hot afternoon. Suddenly it occurred to Lisa that there might be some secrets in the attic(閣樓), so she decided to take a look around there.Up in the attic, Lisa found everything was covered in a fine layer(層)of dust. The heat in the house rose upwards. Lisa thought briefly about turning around and heading downstairs. But something pushed her to investigate the attic further. She had the sense that in these dusty boxes something important was waiting for her.As Lisa began going through the boxes, she came across a picture of a pretty girl with “Maud” written across the bottom. She stared at the photograph. Maud was her grandmother, and it was hard to believe that the wrinkled woman downstairs had been this laughing, lovely girl.“Lisa honey!” she heard her grandmother call. “Come take a break and have some tea. ”Lisa went downstairs and took the picture with her. “Grandma, is this really you?”Her grandmother laughed. “What, you cant believe it? Yes, thats me; it was taken almost sixty years ago.”“Youd be surprised, Lisa, ”her grandmother responded. “Adults, all of us, were once young and irresponsible like you.”“I dont think Mom was ever like that.”said Lisa. Her mother held the family together and took care of Lisa and Jamal.“Your mother.”her grandmothers voice faded(逐漸消失)as she carefully chose her words. “When your father died in the service, your mother was just a girl herself.
