ADear Editor,I was surprised to read your recent article on the question of students parttime jobs. You appear to be making a lot of generalizations (歸納) on the basis of just one unfortunate incident (I assure you that not all young people who deliver newspapers are as foolish and dishonest as the two youths mentioned in your article)The first point I would like to make is that there are many jobs teenagers can do which give them useful experience of the working world. They are brought into contact with a variety of people, often older, and are given experience of expressing themselves clearly and fluently. I am thinking here of jobs such as travel guides and shop assistants.Another argument for schoolchildren and college students having holiday or weekend jobs is that many parents need the financial assistance. If we take, for example, a family in which the father is unemployed or perhaps a singleparent family on a low income, it seems logical and fair that a son or daughter should try to bring money into the family. One further thing I want to say is that a lot of jobs for the young can be both fun for the people who do them and useful to the community. Young people who help in schools and hospitals often get a great deal of pleasure and satisfaction as well as contributing something valuable to local society. In conclusion, I would add that when I was a girl, my father said my teens were a time for books, hobbies and academic studies. Thinking back, I feel I would have learned much more about myself, other people and life in general if he had allowed me to do a limited amount of real work. Certainly, when she is old enough, I shall encourage my own daughter to do so, rather than waste her time on soap operas and computer games. 1Why did Margaret write the letter to the editor?A. To ask for some advice.B. To express her support.C. To show her thankfulness.D. To give a different opinion. 2What was the editors attitude towards students parttime jobs?A. Supportive. B. Indifferent.C. Opposed. D. Tolerant. 3Margaret believes that students parttime jobs _.A. help improve their speaking abilityB. have a good influence on their studiesC. might cause higher unemploymentD. usually offer them very little pay答案與解析A細(xì)節(jié)理解題。根據(jù)第二段的“and are given experience of expressing themselves clearly and fluently”可知,Margaret Williams認(rèn)為學(xué)生從事兼職工作可以提高口語(yǔ)表達(dá)能力。4When Margaret was a student, her father _.A. encouraged her to support herselfB. didnt allow her to do parttime jobsC. thought she could do a little parttime workD. didnt let her spend too much time learning答案與解析B細(xì)節(jié)理解題。根據(jù)最后一段的“when I was a girl, my father said my teens were a time for books, hobbies and academic studies”和“if he had allowed me to do a limited amount of real work”可知, Margaret Williams的父親當(dāng)時(shí)不讓她從事兼職工作。BA group of boys wanted to help some orphans (孤兒). They planned to collect money for them so that they could go to school. They wanted to ask people for donations (捐款). The first man they turned to was a person sitting on a chair. They saw him through the door. He was scolding a boy for tearing a piece of unused paper into pieces. He was very angry and warned the boy not to waste paper.They_didnt_want_to_waste_their_time_there. When they were going away, the gentleman called them in. They were in two minds whether to go in or not. Finally, they all went in. The gentleman smiled and asked them to take a seat. They didnt know how to begin. They looked at one another when the gentleman asked the purpose of their visit. The boys gathered courage and explained to him the purpose of their visit. When they told him of the need to collect money for the orphans, he asked them to wait. As they were waiting, hot snacks were served to them. The gentleman pulled out an envelope from his pocket, gave it to them and asked them to open it and have a look. To their surprise, when they opened it, they saw a cheque for$l,000,000. He told them to make good use of it and to hand it over to the local schools. The gentleman knew that they were not going to enter the house when they saw him scolding his boy for wasting paper. He said to them, “I am not mean, but saving what we have is a good habit. We can spend every penny we save on the most important thing this way.” That day the boys were extremely delighted. They couldnt thank him enough. 5The children were collecting money because they wanted to _.A. help improve the local schoolsB. receive better education at schoolC. provide an opportunity for orphans to go to schoolD. help those children who were treated badly at home答案與解析C細(xì)節(jié)理解題。根據(jù)第一段的“A group of boys wanted to help some orphans (孤兒). They planned to collect money for them so that they could go to school.” 6What does the underlined sentence in Paragraph 3 tell us?A. The boys were extremely busy with their plan.B. The boys didnt think the man would give them money.C. The boys regretted having tried to carry out their plan.D. The boys didnt think the man was that boys father.
