3、tistchurchintulsa,oklahoma,since1983.itisaverywarmpartofmylifeatthepresenttime.formyundergraduatework,iwenttooklahomastateuniversityandgraduatedfromtherein1977.iamattachingtothisstatementacopyofmyresumeforfurtherdetailsofmyeducation.igraduatedfromtheuniversitywithacademichonorsandproceededtotheyalel

4、awschool,whereireceivedmyjddegreein1980.upongraduationfromlawschool,ibecameapracticinglawyerwiththewashington,dc,firmofward,hardraker,andross.in1981,iwasintroducedtonowjudgethomasbyamutualfriend.judgethomastoldmethathewasanticipatingapoliticalappointment,andheaskedifiwouldbeinterestedinworkingwithhi

5、m.hewas,infact,appointedasassistantsecretaryofeducationforcivilrights.afterhehadtakenthatpost,heaskedifiwouldbecomehisassistant,andiacceptedthatposition.inmyearlyperiodthere,ihadtwomajorprojects.thefirstwasanarticleiwroteforjudgethomassignatureontheeducationofminoritystudents.thesecondwastheorganiza

6、tionofaseminaronhigh-riskstudentswhichwasabandonedbecausejudgethomastransferredtotheeeocwherehebecamethechairmanofthatoffice.duringthisperiodatthedepartmentofeducation,myworkingrelationshipwithjudgethomaswaspositive.ihadagooddealofresponsibilityandindependence.ithoughtherespectedmyworkandthathetrust

7、edmyjudgment.afterapproximatelythreemonthsofworkingthere,heaskedmetogooutsociallywithhim.whathappenednextandtellingtheworldaboutitarethetwomostdifficultthings-experiencesofmylife.itisonlyafteragreatdealofagonizingconsiderationandsleeplessnumber-agreatnumberofsleeplessnightsthatiamabletotalkoftheseun

8、pleasantmatterstoanyonebutmyclosefriends.ideclinedtheinvitationtogooutsociallywithhimandexplainedtohimthatithoughtitwouldjeopardizewhatatthetimeiconsideredtobeaverygoodworkingrelationship.ihadanormalsociallifewithothermenoutsideoftheoffice.ibelievedthen,asnow,thathavingasocialrelationshipwithaperson

9、whowassupervisingmyworkwouldbeill-advised.iwasveryuncomfortablewiththeideaandtoldhimso.ithoughtthatbysayingnoandexplainingmyreasonsmyemployerwouldabandonhissocialsuggestions.however,tomyregret,inthefollowingfewweeks,hecontinuedtoaskmeoutonseveraloccasions.hepressedmetojustifymyreasonsforsayingnotohi

10、m.theseincidentstookplaceinhisofficeormine.theywereintheformofprivateconversationswhichwouldnothavebeenoverheardbyanyoneelse.myworkingrelationshipbecameevenmorestrainedwhenjudgethomasbegantouseworksituationstodiscusssex.ontheseoccasions,hewouldcallmeintohisofficeforreportsoneducationissuesandproject

11、s,orhemightsuggestthat,becauseofthetimepressuresofhisschedule,wegotolunchtoagovernmentcafeteria.afterabriefdiscussionofwork,hewouldturntheconversationtoadiscussionofsexualmatters.hisconversationswereveryvivid.hespokeaboutactsthathehadseeninpornographicfilmsinvolvingsuchmattersaswomenhavingsexwithani

12、malsandfilmsshowinggroupsexorrapescenes.hetalkedaboutpornographicmaterialsdepictingindividualswithlargepenisesorlargebreastsinvolvedinvarioussexacts.onseveraloccasions,thomastoldmegraphicallyofhisownsexualprowess.becauseiwasextremelyuncomfortabletalkingaboutsexwithhimatallandparticularlyinsuchagraph

13、icway,itoldhimthatididnotwanttotalkaboutthesesubjects.iwouldalsotrytochangethesubjecttoeducationmattersortononsexualpersonalmatterssuchashisbackgroundorhisbeliefs.myeffortstochangethesubjectwererarelysuccessful.throughouttheperiodoftheseconversations,healsofromtimetotimeaskedmeforsocialengagements.m

14、yreactiontotheseconversationswastoavoidthembyeliminatingopportunitiesforustoengageinextendedconversations.thiswasdifficultbecauseatthetimeiwashisonlyassistantattheofficeofeducation-orofficeforcivilrights.duringthelatterpartofmytimeatthedepartmentofeducation,thesocialpressuresandanyconversationofhiso

15、ffensivebehaviorended.ibeganbothtobelieveandhopethatourworkingrelationshipcouldbeaproper,cordial,andprofessionalone.whenjudgethomaswasmadechairoftheeeoc,ineededtofacethequestionofwhethertogowithhim.iwasaskedtodoso,andidid.theworkitselfwasinteresting,andatthattimeitappearedthatthesexualovertureswhich

16、hadsotroubledmehadended.ialsofacedtherealisticfactthatihadnoalternativejob.whileimighthavegonebacktoprivatepractice,perhapsinmyoldfirmoratanother,iwasdedicatedtocivilrightswork,andmyfirstchoicewastobeinthatfield.moreover,thedepartmentofeducationitselfwasadubiousventure.presidentreaganwasseekingtoabo

17、lishtheentiredepartment.formyfirstmonthsattheeeoc,whereicontinuedtobeanassistanttojudgethomas,therewerenosexualconversationsorovertures.however,duringthefallandwinterof1982,thesebeganagain.thecommentswererandomandrangedfrompressingmeaboutwhyididntgooutwithhimtoremarksaboutmypersonalappearance.iremem

18、berhissayingthatsomedayiwouldhavetotellhimtherealreasonthatiwouldntgooutwithhim.hebegantoshowdispleasureinhistoneandvoiceandhisdemeanorandhiscontinuedpressureforanexplanation.hecommentedonwhatiwaswearingintermsofwhetheritmadememoreorlesssexuallyattractive.theincidentsoccurredinhisinnerofficeattheeeo

19、c.oneoftheoddestepisodesirememberwasanoccasioninwhichthomaswasdrinkingacokeinhisoffice.hegotupfromthetableatwhichwewereworking,wentovertohisdesktogetthecoke,lookedatthecanandasked,whohaspubichaironmycoke?onotheroccasions,hereferredtothesizeofhisownpenisasbeinglargerthannormal,andhealsospokeonsomeocc

20、asionsofthepleasureshehadgiventowomenwithoralsex.atthispoint,late1982,ibegantofeelseverestressonthejob.ibegantobeconcernedthatclarencethomasmighttakeouthisangerwithmebydegradingmeornotgivingmeimportantassignments.ialsothoughtthathemightfindanexcusefordismissingme.injanuaryof1983,ibeganlookingforanot

24、inningatoralrobertsuniversity.iagreedtotakethejobinlargepartbecauseofmydesiretoescapethepressuresifeltattheeeocduetojudgethomas.wheniinformedhimthatiwasleavinginjuly,irecallthathisresponsewasthatnowiwouldnolongerhaveanexcusefornotgoingoutwithhim.itoldhimthatistillpreferrednottodoso.atsometimeafterthatmeeting,heaskedifhecouldtakemetodinnerattheendoftheterm.whenideclined,heassuredmethatthedinnerwasaprofessionalcourtesyonlyandnotasocialinvitation.ireluctantlyagreedtoacceptthatinvitation,butonlyifitwasattheeveryendofaworkingday.on,asirecall,thelastdayofmyemploymentattheeeocinthesummerof1983,i
