5、g Grottoes 第9頁/共36頁 Yunggang Grottoes is located in the north cliff of Wuzhoushan Mountain in west suburb of Datong city. The grotto was excavated by depending on the mountain and stretches for 1000m from east to west. Now remain 45 grottoes and in the whole grotto group are more than 1100 big and s

6、mall statues of Buddha, 252 big and small cavity niches and more than 51000 stone carved statues. The biggest statue of Buddha is up to 17m high and the smallest statue is only 2millimeters high第10頁/共36頁 It is one of ancient grotto groups of largest scale and one of the 3 main grotto groups in our c

7、ountry. The whole grotto group is divided into 3 parts, i.e. east part, middle part and west part. In the grottoes of the east part are mainly Buddha pagodas, also called pagoda cave. The Tanyao five grottoes are the grotto group excavated earliest and of largest grandeur among Yunggang grottoes and

Yunggang Grottoes are wellknown all over the world for their grand momentum, rich contents and

9、 exquisite carving. The fifth and sixth grottoes and wuhua cave are colorful in contents, majestic and magnificent. It is the essence of Yunggang art and also the artistic treasury well-known in the world . In the year of 2001, yunggang grotto was listed in the world culture heritage by UNESCO.第12頁/

It got its name because it was and remains a major temple of the Huayan sect, a sub-ca

11、tegory of the Buddhism popular in north China. The Huayan Temple is divided into two parts: the Upper Huayan Temple and Lower Huayan Temple which have their own gate and architecture respectively. 12、e features with a rang of gorgeously decorated buildings, the biggest and most illustrious of which is the Grand Hall (Da Xiong Bao Dian), the main hall of the temple. It is the main hall for preserving the Sutra where more than 18,000 Buddhist Sutra volumes and scripts are preserved.
