10、anacles of segregationandthechainsofdiscrimination.onehundredyearslater,thenegrolives on a lonely island of poverty in the midst of avast ocean of material prosperity. one hundred yearslater, the negro is still languishing in the cornersof american society and finds himself an exile in hisown land.
11、so we have come here today to dramatize anappalling condition.in a sense we have come to our nations capital tocash a check.when thearchitectsofour republicwrotethemagnificentwordsoftheconstitutionandthedeclarationofindependence,theyweresigningapromissorynoteto whicheveryamericanwas to fallheir.this
12、notewas a promise thatallmen would be guaranteedtheinalienablerightsoflife,liberty,andthepursuit of happiness.it is obvious today that america has defaulted onthis promissory note insofar as her citizens of colorare concerned.insteadofhonoringthissacredobligation, america has given the negro people
13、a badcheck which has come back marked insufficient funds.but we refuse to believe that the bank of justice isbankrupt.werefuseto believethatthereareinsufficient funds in the great vaults of opportunityof this nation.so we have come to cash this check - a check thatwill give us upon demand the riches
14、 of freedom and thesecurity of justice.we have also come to this hallowed spot to remindamerica of the fierce urgency of now. this is no timeto engage in the luxury of cooling off or to take thetranquilizing drug of gradualism. now is the time torise from the dark and desolate valley of segregationt
