6、 and so I spend a lot oftime look ing words up in my dicti on ary. This makesreading difficult for me because by the time I elooked up the word in my dicti on ary, I e forgotte nwhat the rest of the sentence was about. That mytrouble really I rely too much on my dicti on ary.B: Well, why don you try

7、 to read a text withoutusing your dictionary the first time you read it? Youprobably be able to understand most of it and guesswhat some of the words mea n.2. A: I have to read a lot of books and articles inEnglish for my work I m a consultant in bus in essman ageme nt. What I find most difficult is

8、 finding themain point in an article or a paragraph. I always try totake no tes whe n I m readi ng and so sometimes Ifind that I m almost copying out the whole articlebecause I can decide what the really importa nt points are.B: It might help if you read through the book orarticle very quickly first

9、 just to get an idea of what itabout. I think it difficult to read something for thefirst time and take notes as well.3. A: I like reading novels and short stories in myown Ianguage and in English, but thereone thing Ifind very difficult in English. Inever quite sure if thewriter is being serious or

10、 not. Several times Ie readsomething I thought was serious and later Ie foundout it was supposed to be funny.B: I have exactly the same problem. I suppose theonly thing to do is to read as much as possible.The none day perhaps wellunderstand the British sense of humor.4. A: I have to read a lot in E

11、n glish in my studies andthis is causing me problems. I read too slowly inEnglish. Do you think I can train myself to readquickly and at the same time understand what I mreading?B: Well, there are special courses in speedreading, I think. But you could probably help yourselfif you set yourself a tim

12、e limit and try to read as muchas you can with in the time. It was mainly because of himthat I went on to study Ianguages French andGerman at university. I mean, French was reallythe fi

14、rst Ianguage I ever learned. Well, I don countLati n, because I n ever man aged to speak any Latinat all. Er, well, this . this teacher didn make iteasy . he didn make it easy at all, but I found thatwith him I really learned a lot.When I think back, I . don really know why Iliked him so much, becau

15、se he was very strict withus. He made us work very hard I mean, lots ofgrammar exercises, vocabulary tests, that sort of thing er, and he was n very friendly either, for thefirst two or three years. Oh, as well as that, he didnreally try to make the classes in teresti ngI mea n,no no video, of cours

16、e, i n those days, nocassettes . but, er we had a few films in Frenchevery term. No, i n fact, the only time we reallypracticed trying to speak French was, er, was withthe wife of one of the music teachers, who was French, er, and she gave us an hourcon versati on classevery week. But, you know, bec

17、ause of that mansome people might say in spite of him . no, thatwouldnbe fair, nobut quite a lot of us bega n tolike France and the French a lot, and, er, to visitFrance in the summer holidays to see it forourselves.(Part II)Yes, I thi nk with him I lear ned that whe n youlearn a foreign Ianguage .

18、its, it . well, it likeopening a door or awindowinto a foreign country.And that good for you, I think, because you begin tosee that the way they do things and think in yourcountry is, um, isnnecessarily the only way or,indeed, the best way. It funny, I still have a veryclear picture of that teacher.

19、 He was English but hedidn look English somehow, cos he had very, veryblack hair and very dark eyes, and he wore glasseswith black frames, but you could see his eyes verywell, and every one in the class always had thefeeling that he was looking at them. And he had verythick, bushy eyebrows that made

Oh, I wan ted to get my own back you see onold Mr. Goodman the chap we used to call . er .Goody” so I put this bucket of water over theclassroom door but it fell on him and he got soaked,you see. I remember her well, shewas called Miss Brown and she was our historyteacher. Oh, she really made history come to life,she really did.Presenter: Were there any

32、 bad moments? youhave a worst teacher?Shirley: Aye, I did and I can remember nametoo. Her name was Mrs. Sharpe and taughtmath. Oh, she had no patie nee. 45、azingly late, and, er, she didn really start work until, er, in the evening I think, an then she liked to have rock music on really loud anshe used to, you know, play records really loud rightthrough untilsort of very lateat night, you know, into the small hours (Oh God!)and I was, sort of, well I w

46、as just the opposite and er,well, the only way I could ever get any work donewas to make myself wake up in credibly early andwell, the n work a bit and have some breakfast and,the n, well, you know,I sort of potter about a bit and then I go and do myshopping and things, well that be about getting ontowards midday, but then in the after noon I have arest and whe n I woke up I think about eating and Isuppose
