3、ivealtarforChinesemonarchsduringtheMingandQingdynasties.ItwasdecreedthatrulersofsuccessivedynastieswouldplacealtarsintheirowncapitalstoworshipHeavenandprayforgoodharvest.Butwhy?TheancientChinesebelievedthatHeavenwasthesupremeruleroftheuniverseandthefateofmankind,andthusworshipingritesdedicatedtoHeav

4、encameintobeing.TheHeaventheancientChinesereferredtowasactuallytheUniverse,ornature.Inthosedays,therewerespecficritesofworship.ThiswasespeciallytrueduringtheMingandQingdynastieswhenelaborateceremonieswereheld.TheTempleofHeavenwasbuiltin1420duringthereignofEmperorYoungleoftheMingDynasty.Situatedinthe

5、southernpartofthecity,thisgrandsetofstructurescoversanareaof273hectares.Tobettersymbolizeheavenandearth,thenorthernpartoftheTempleiscircularwhilethesouthernpartissquare.Thewholecompoundisenclosedbytwowalls,asquarewalloutsidearoundone.Theouterareaischaracterizedbysuburbanscenery,whiletheinnerpartisus

6、edforsacrifices.TheinnerenclosureconsistsoftheHallofPrayerforGoodHarvestandtheCircularMoundAltar.(AlongtheImperialPassageleadingfromtheSouthernLatticeStarGateinfrontoftheCircularMoundAltar)theCircularMoundAltarisenclosedbytwowalls,eachcontainingfourgroupsofSouthernLatticeStarGate,eachinturnconsistin

7、gofthreedoors,with24marbledoorsaltogether.Standingonthepassagefacingnorth,youwillnoticethatwitheachpairofdoorsonisnarrowerthantheother.Thisreflectsthefeudalhierarchy:thewiderdoorwasreservedformonarchs,whilethenarroweronewasusedbycourtiers.Onthedayoftheceremony,theemperorwoulddonhisritualcostumeandbe

19、iccarvedmarbleramplaidinthestonestaircaseleadinguptothefrontentrance.Therampiscarvedin“TwodragonsPlayingwithapearl”designinrelief.Wewillenterthemainhallbygoingupthestonestaircaseontheeasternside.(Onthemarbleterraceofthemainhall)thearchofthehallisbuttressedby16giantpillarsontworings.Ontopofthepillars

20、therearegiltbracketssupportingacircularcaisson,orcoveredceiling.Theceilingischaracterizedbyagoldencoilingdragondesign.The8pillaroftheinnerringarepaintedscarletanddecoratedwithgoldenlotuses.Tothenorthofthehallthereisamarblepedestal.Atopit,upawoodenflightof9steps,iswherethemajortabletdedicatetoHeavenw

21、asenshrined.OneachflankfourtabletsareenshrinedinhonoroftheancestorsoftheQingemperors.IntheannexhallinhornoroftheancestorsoftheQingemperors.Intheannexhallsinthecourtyard,therearetabletsdedicatedtothedeitiesofthesun,moon,constellation,cloud,rain,windandthunder.(EchoWallandTriplesoundStones)Asidefromex

27、araisedpassage360meterslong,whichtheemperoralsotooktoproceedtothehall.Thisbroadnorth-southwalkway,calledDanbiqiao(RedStairwaybridge),connectsthetwosetsofmainbuildingintheTempleofHeavenandconstitutesasingleaxis.Thepassageisdividedintoleft,controlandrightpathsbythecrossarrangementofslabs.Thecentraland

40、ntsthe12monthsandtheouterringsthe12divisionsofthedayandnight.Betweenthetworingsthereare24partitionedspacestomarkthesolartermsoftheChineselunaryear.Thepillars,28innumber,alsorepresentthe28constellationsintheuniverse-theancientChinesebelievedthattherewere28constellationsthatmadeupthesky.Thecenterofthe
