Please go ahead.Z: Dont step on the threshold in temples, because they are Buddhas shoulders according to the Buddhist s

3、cripture. And one more thing, wed better show our respect to Buddha here even if you may not believe in any religions. J: Its very nice of you to tell me that! Zhang, what is this temple built for?Z: It was built in 1755, the 20th year of Emperor Qianlongs reign in Qing dynasty, to commemorate the v

4、ictory of putting down the rebellions of the minority Zhun Ge Er Tribe of Elute Mongolia. J: I got it. You know, this is my first time here, could you please tell me more about this temple?Z: Sure, that is my job. Let me start from the name of the temple. Puning, means universal peace reflecting the

5、 Emperor Qianlongs wish that there were no more rebellions in his country and his subjects could have a happy and peaceful life forever. And our local people also call this temple Great Bodhisattva Temple, because of the ten-thousand armed and ten-thousand eyed Bodhisattva, which is the largest gold

6、 lacquered and wood-carved Buddha existing in the world. The whole temple covers an area of 33,000 square meters, and in architecture, it is a combination of traditional Han style and Tibetan style. J: that is interesting! What is the difference between the two different architectural styles, Zhang?

7、Z: Please look at the panorama, the frontal part of this temple is in traditional Han style, we say Qielan Qitang in Chinese. Qielan is a courtyard where lamas live, and Qitang refers to the seven main buildings including Mountain Gate, the Bell Tower, the Drum Tower, the Hall of Heavenly Kings, the

8、 Hall of Great Buddha, the Eastside Hall and the Westside Hall. And all the constructions are built along the central axis symmetrically. The rear part of the temple is in Tibetan style, all the buildings are on the 8.92-meter high platform, and we can go up there through 42 steps, modeling after th

9、e Sanmoye Temple in Tibet. Later, we can see the architectural form of Mandela and the Great Buddha in detail.J: I cant wait. 10、u got it! It is the vehicle that Buddha uses to release all the living creatures from sufferings. And more, according to the Buddhist cosmology, it symbolizes Sumeru Mountain, which is the center of the universe. Inside the hall, there is the ten-thousand armed and ten-thousand eyed Bodhisattva. It

11、is carved by five kinds of wood; they are pine, cypress, elm, linden, and fir, weighing 110 tons. J: Why does the Bodhisattva have the so-called name?Z: Except the three eyes on her face and the two hands clapping together, on both sides of the Buddha, she has 40 arms, and inside each palm, there is

12、 an eye. Each palm and eye represents 25 retributions, so 25 times 40, that is 1,000. The three eyes show that Buddha could see the past, the present and the future. Since Sui dynasty, the system of imperial competitive examination came into being, and gradually it became the most important approach for the government to select the elites to work in the imperial co

20、urt. Therefore, all the students wanted to stand out and to bring honor to their families. How to make it come true? Hardworking was a must, and moreover, they would like to pray for good luck from Kuixing before the examination. Kuixing, a name of constellation-Big Dapper and also a mythological fi

21、gure in Daoism, took charge of academic study. Now, you see, even some students would take the picture of Kuixing with them when taking part in the imperial examination.T: Woo, thats interesting! What does Kuixing look like?M: I have to say that Kuixing is absolutely not handsome man, but ugly. Acco

22、rding to the legend in history, he was a lame person with pockmarks on his face; however, he was a talented person, so he was appointed to be Zhuangyuan-number one scholar, by emperor himself. Here in Chengde, we started the imperial examination until 1738, the 3rd year of Emperor Qianlongs reign in Qing dynasty, and then the atmosphere of learning prevailed. In that situation, Haizhong-the magistrate of Chengde, built this Kuixing Temple, which was the largest one in China.
