Inadvocatingare-conceptualizationofIslamicArchitectureasacoherentyetfluid,multifaceted,andopen-mindedfieldofstudy,Iformulatethreequestions:Howcanwestudyaculturallydefinedarchitecturaltraditionwithoutreducingittoessentialandtimelesscategories?Howcanwecritiquethedominantarchitecturalparadigmwithouttotallydiscardingtheideaofparadigmitselforturningawayfromitsinstructiveexamples?HowcanwerethinktheperiodizationofIslamicarchitecturalhistoryinamorerepresentativewaywithoutcuttingitofffromacomparativehistoricalframework?Thesebroadprogramsofresearchinformmynextbookproject:writingacriticalhistoriographyofIslamicarchitecture,criticalnotonlyinpointingoutthebiasesandshortcomingsofpastinquires,butalsoinhighlightingthetheoreticalandideologicalpreconceptionsunderlyingpresentinquires.

MyaffiliationwiththeAgaKhanProgramforIslamicArchitecturetaughtmetoapproachIslamicarchitectureasascholarlyfieldintheprocessofredrawingitsepistemologicalandmethodologicalcontoursinordertobecomeamoreactiveandintegralcomponentofworldarchitecture.Thisviewisguidedbyapersonalsenseofresponsibilitytowardthedisciplineandbyabeliefthatthosewhospecializeinafieldofstudyshouldnotonlyquestionwhattheystudyorhowbutalsowhytheyarestudyingit.Tothisend,mylecturecoursesandseminarspresentarchitectureinwaysthatilluminateitsinteractionwithcultureandsocietyandstresstheroleofhumanagencyinshapingandreshapingthatinterplay.

IalsoseetheAgaKhanProgramasauniquevehicletoassess,adjust,andredefineourroleaseducatorsinafastchangingglobalsettingandtofosteracademiclinkswiththeproducersandinterpretersofarchitectureindifferentpartsoftheIslamicworldtoday.WhatIhavebeentryingtoorganizeisacommunityofinterestthatbringstogetherthemembersofoursmallgroupatMIT—studentsandfaculty—withcolleaguesacrossthedepartmentofarchitectureandtheInstituteaswellasincentersofstudyandresearchintheUSandabroad.

Thisobjectivehasinformedmypolicyinchoosingtheparticipantsinthethreeextra-academicprogramsIsupervise:thespeakersatAKPIA’s“AnEveningWith”lectureseries,therecipientsofourtravelgrants,andthepostdoctoralresearchersinourvisitingscholarsprograms.Inthisintellectualnetwork,therolethatIassignedtomyselfsomeyearsagoasinterpreterofIslamicarchitectureandurbanismpastandpresenthasexpandedinscopeandmethodsbutitcertainlyhasnotlostitsstronghumanisticgrounding.

TofurthemyeducationiplanttotakeadvantageofavolnteerbasedschemecalledCoralCAyConvservationnextsummer,whcihwillinvolvethreeweeksinthebayislandsofhondurascollectingresearchdataontheorganismsthatlieonandarundthereefthere.Whilstinhondurasiwillgainmyadvancedopenwatercertificate,learnalabouthecoralsandfishthatlivethereandhaveatasteofwhatconservationworkisabout

MyresponsibilitiesascompanysecretaryandITdeputyforouryoungenterprisecompany,Isis,havetaughtmetheimportanceofgoodorgnisationandefficientrecordkeepingtoensurethecompanyrunsefectivlyandsmoothly.havingtofillinformssuchasmemorandumsandarticlesofassociationalsotaughtmetheimportanceofteamwork.Atschoolihavehadseveralresponsibilitiesincludingcanteendutyandstairdutywhichinvolvedorganisingtheyoungermembersoftheschooltohelpthecanteenstaffandavoidaccidentsonthestairs

Outsieschoolienjoytrampoliningandcurrentlycompetewiththecityofsheffieldsquad.ihavealsocmpetedfortheschoolteam.takingpartinthedukeofedinburghawardschemewasalsosomethingthathasgivenegraetsatisfaction.IhavecompletedbronzeandsilverandamcurrentlyworkingtowardsthegolIalsoundertookthetridentschemewhichinvolvesaworkexperienceplcement,apersoanlchallengeandcommunityinvolvement

IhavealsoundertakenworkexperienceatGreosideprimaryschoolwhereispenttwoweeksworkingwithaY1classandaY2class,helpingwithreadingwritingandnumber.iwasalsoresponsibleforagroupofthreechioldrenonaschoo,triptoCusworthHall.ienjoyedworkingwithboththestaffandchildrenasitincreasedmyinterpersonalskillsandhelpemegaininconfidence.otherjobsihaveundertakenhavebeenatarestaurantwhreiworkedasawaitress,andinapharmacywhereihelpedtaeinprescriptionsandgetthemreadyaswellasworkinontheshopfloorservingcustomersandhelpingwithnyqueriescustomersmayhavehad.Boththesejobsinvolvealotofworkwithpeoplewhichienjoyed.
