AdemonstrationoftelevisionwasheldattheNewYorkWorld’sFairin1939,andduringthe1940snetworkswereestablishedandtelevisionsetsbegantobesold.But,forawhile,radiostillhadcompletecontroloftheentertainmentindustry.BACKItwasinthe1950sthattelevisionstartedtotaketheplaceofradiointheUnitedStates,andintheearly1960sover750TVstationsweretelecastingtoabout52millionsetswiththeresultthattheAmericanTVaudienceincludedalmosteveryfamily.BACKTheBigThreeofthenetworks---theNationalBroadcastingCompany(NBC),theColumbiaBroadcastingSystem(CBS),andtheAmericanBroadcastingCompany(ABC)---introducealargenumberofnewshows,whicharerelayedthroughouttheUnitedStatesandareoftensoldabroad.BACK

TheBigThreeofthenetworks---theNationalBroadcastingCompany(NBC),theColumbiaBroadcastingSystem(CBS),andtheAmericanBroadcastingCompany(ABC)---introducealargenumberofnewshows,whicharerelayedthroughouttheUnitedStatesandareoftensoldabroad.BACK2.Thegenerationgap
