SothefirstpointIwanttomakeisthatEnglishpronunciationmustbetaught;theteachershouldbepreparedtodevotesomeofthelessontimetothis,andbyhiswholeattitudetothesubjectshouldgetthestudenttofeel,thathereisamatterworthyofreceivinghiscloseattention.So,thereshouldbeoccasions,whenotheraspectsofEnglish,suchasgrammarorspelling,areallowedforthemomenttotakesecondplace.

Apartfromthisquestionofthetimegiventopronunciation,therearetwootherrequirementsfortheteacher:thefirst,knowledge;thesecond,technique.

Itisimportantthattheteachershouldbeinpossessionofthenecessaryinformation.Thiscangenerallybeobtainedfrombooks.Itispossibletogetfrombookssomeideaofthemechanicsofspeech,andofwhatwecallgeneralphonetictheory.Itisalsopossibleinthiswaytogetaclearmentalpictureoftherelationshipbetweenthesoundsofdifferentlanguages,betweenthespeechhabitsofEnglishpeopleandthose,say,ofyourstudents.Unlesstheteacherhassuchapicture,anycommentshemaymakeonhisstudentspronunciationareunlikelytobeofmuchuse,andlessontimespentonpronunciationmaywellbetimewasted.
