DNAtestingrevealsthegenesofeachindividualperson.Sincetheearlytwentiethcentury
scientistshaveknownthatallhumancharacteristicsarecontainedinaperson'sgenesandare
passedfromparentstochildren.Genesworkasachemicalinstructionmanualforeachpartand
eachfunctionofthebody.TheirbasicchemicalelementiscalledDNA,acopyofwhichcanbe
foundineverycell.TheexistenceofgenesandthechemicalstructureofDNAwereunderstoodby
themid-1900s,butscientistshaveonlyrecentlybeenabletoidentifyapersonfromjustadropof
bloodorasinglehair.
OneofthemostimportantusesofDNAtestingisincriminalinvestigation.Theveryfirstuse
ofDNAtestinginacriminalcasewasin1985inGreatBritain,whenamanconfessedtokillinga
youngwomanintheEnglishcountryside.Becausepolicehadfoundsamplesofthekiller'sDNAat
thesceneofthecrime,abiologistsuggestedthatitmightbepossibletocomparethatDNAto
somefromtheconfessor'sblood.Toeveryone'ssurprise,thetestsshowedthathewasnotthekiller.
Norwasheguiltyofasimilarmurderthathadhappenedsometimeearlier.Atthatpointhe

5,000localmenforsamplesoftheirblood,andDNAtestingrevealedthatoneofthemwasthe
realmurderer,sothefirstmanwassetfree.
In1992,twolawprofessors,PeterNeufeldandBarryScheck,decidedtouseDNAevidence
tohelpsetfreesuchmistakenlyconvictedprisoners.Withthehelpoftheirstudents,theycreateda
not-for-profitorganizationcalledtheInnocenceProject.Mostoftheirclientsarepoormen,many
fromracialandethnicminorities.Infact,studieshaveshownthatU.S.judgesandjuriesareoften
influencedbyracialandethnicbackground,andthatpeoplefromminoritygroupsaremorelikely
tobeconvicted.Someofthesemenhadbeensentencedtodeath,aformofpunishmentusedin
thirtyeightstatesoutoffifty(asof2006)。Formostoftheseprisoners,theironlyhopewas
anothertrialinwhichDNAtestingcouldbeusedtoprovetheirinnocence.
Between1992and2006,theInnocenceProjecthelpedfree100men.Someoftheseprisoners
hadbeeninjailforten,twentyyearsormoreforcrimestheydidnotcommit.However,thegoal
oftheInnocenceProjectisnotsimplytosetfreethosewhoarewrongfullyinjail.Theyalsohope
tobringaboutrealchangesinthecriminaljusticesystem.
Illinoisinthelate1990s,agroupofjournalismstudentsatNorthwesternUniversitywere
abletobringaboutsuchachangeinthatstate.TheybeganinvestigatingsomeIllinoisprisoners
whoclaimedtobeinnocent.ThroughDNAtesting,thestudentswereabletoprovethatinfactthe
prisonerswerenotguiltyofthecrimestheyhadbeenaccusedof.Thirteenofthesemenwereset
free,andin2000,GovernorRyanofIllinoisdecidedtostopcarryingoutdeathsentencesuntil
