中國大學生英語即興演講中模糊限制語的人際意義研究AbstractAsChineseuniversitystudentshavemoreopportunitiestoengageinEnglishspeakingandexchangeactivities,theirabilitytoimprovisespeechesinEnglishhasbecomeincreasinglyimportant.Inthisstudy,wefocusedontheuseofvaguerestrictionlanguageinimpromptuspeechesandexploreditsinterpersonalsignificancethroughitspragmaticfunctions.Ourfindingssuggestthatvaguerestrictionlanguageinimpromptuspeechesservesasawayforspeakerstocreateaharmoniousrelationshipwiththeiraudienceandtoestablishtheirownidentityasaspeakerwhoisconsiderate,humble,andrespectfulofothers'opinions.Thestudyprovidesinsightsintotheimportanceofpragmaticcompetenceindevelopingsuccessfulinterculturalcommunicationskills.Keywords:impromptuspeech,vaguerestrictionlanguage,pragmaticcompetence,interculturalcommunicationIntroductionImpromptuspeechisacommonpracticeinvariouscontexts,suchasdebatecompetitions,jobinterviews,andpublicspeakingevents.Itrequiresspeakerstogiveaspeechonatopictheyhavenothadtimetopreparefor,relyingontheirabilitytoimproviseinthemoment.InChina,asEnglishlanguageeducationcontinuestogainimportance,ChineseuniversitystudentsareparticipatinginmoreandmoreEnglishimpromptuspeechcontests.However,duetoculturaldifferences,theymayencounterdifficultiesincommunicatingwithEnglish-speakingaudiences.Pragmaticcompetenceistheabilitytouselanguageinasociallyappropriateway,takingintoaccountvarioussituationalandculturalfactors.Itisessentialforsuccessfulinterculturalcommunication.Oneaspectofpragmaticcompetenceistheuseofvaguerestrictionlanguage,whichcanservevariouspragmaticfunctionsindiscourse,suchasshowingpolitenessandhumility,expressinguncertainty,andavoidingconfrontation(Eslami&Fathi,2017).However,littleresearchhasbeendoneontheuseofvaguerestrictionlanguageinthecontextofChineseuniversitystudents'impromptuspeechesinEnglish.Therefore,thisstudyaimstoinvestigatetheuseofvaguerestrictionlanguageinChineseuniversitystudents'impromptuspeechesinEnglishandexploreitsinterpersonalsignificanceindevelopingpragmaticcompetenceandsuccessfulinterculturalcommunicationskills.LiteratureReviewPragmaticcompetencereferstothespeakers'abilitytoapplycontext-dependentrulesinasociallyappropriatemanner,takingintoaccountvarioussituationalandculturalfactors(Bachman,1990).Oneaspectofpragmaticcompetenceistheuseofvaguerestrictionlanguage,whichcanbeseenasastrategytoavoidconflictsandmaintainpositiveinterpersonalrelationships(Fraser,1990;Eslami&Fathi,2017).Vaguerestrictionlanguag
