TheBigWildGoosePagoda大雁塔TheTempleofHeaven,literallytheAltarofHeaven(TraditionalChinese:天壇;SimplifiedChinese:天壇;pinyin:TiānTn)isacomplexofTaoistbuildingssituatedinsoutheasternurbanBeijing,inXuanwuDistrict.Constructionofthecomplexbeganin1420,andwasthereaftervisitedbyallsubsequentEmperorsoftheMingandQingdynasties.ItisregardedasaTaoisttemple,althoughtheworshipofHeaven,especiallybythereigningmonarchoftheday,pre-datesTaoism.

TheTemplegroundscovers2.73km??ofparkland,andcomprisesthreemaingroupsofconstructions,allbuiltaccordingtostrictphilosophicalrequirements:

TheEarthlyMount(圜丘壇)isthealtarproper.Itisanemptyplatformonthreelevelsofmarblestones,wheretheEmperorprayedforfavourableweather;

TheHouseofHeavenlyLord(皇穹宇),asingle-gabledcircularbuilding,builtonasinglelevelofmarblestonebase,wherethealtarswerehousedwhennotinuse;

TheHallofAnnualPrayer(祈年殿),amagnificenttriple-gabledcircularbuilding,builtonthreelevelsofmarblestonebase,wheretheEmperorprayedforgoodharvests.

InancientChina,theEmperorofChinawasregardedastheSonofHeaven,whoadministeredearthlymattersonbehalfof,andrepresenting,heavenlyauthority.Tobeseentobeshowingrespecttothesourceofhisauthority,intheformofsacrificestoheaven,wasextremelyimportant.Thetemplewasbuiltfortheseceremonies,mostlycomprisedofprayersforgoodharvests.

EachwintersolsticetheEmperorandallhisretinuewouldmovethroughthecitytoencampwithinthecomplex,wearingspecialrobesandabstainingfromeatingmeat;theretheEmperorwouldpersonallypraytoHeavenforgoodharvests.Theceremonyhadtobeperfectlycompleted;itwaswidelyheldthatthesmallestofmistakeswouldconstituteabadomenforthewholenationinthecomingyear.

InsidetheHallofAnnualPrayer.TheTempleofHeavenisthegrandestofthefourgreattempleslocatedinBeijing.TheotherprominenttemplesincludetheTempleofSunintheeast(日壇),theTempleofEarthinthenorth(地壇),andtheTempleofMooninthewest(月壇)。

AccordingtoXinhua,inearly2005,theTempleofHeavenunderwenta47millionyuan(5.9millionUSD)face-liftinpreparationforthe2008BeijingSummerOlympicsandtherestorationwascompletedonMay1st,2006.

DaCienTempleislocatedinthesouthernsuburbofXianCity,originallyJinchangLaneinthesoutheastofChanganCity,thecapitaloftheTangDynasty.ItwasthelargesttempleinChinasTangDynastyaswellasoneofthethreeBuddhistscripturestranslationplacesofChanganCityintheTangDynasty.DaCienTemplewasbuiltintheyear648oftheZhenguanreignoftheTangDynastybyCrownPrinceLizhiinordertomournforhismother.Therefore,itisnamedDaCien.SincetheTangDynasty,DaCienTemplehaskeptitsprosperityformorethan1,300years.Itshistoryislongandglorious.Now,theextantareaofthistempleisjustthatoftheWestPagodaYardintheTangDynasty.ThepresentDaCienTemplesitsbacktothenorthandfacestothesouth,andconsistsofthefollowingmainbuildings:GateoftheTemple,BellandDrumTowers,HallfortheGreatBuddha,etc.

In652AD,DayanPagodawasbuilttostorethesutrasandthefigurinesofBuddha,whichwerebroughtfromIndiabyafamousBuddhisttranslatorandtravelerTangSanzang,alsoknownbyhisBuddhistnameasXuanzang.XuanZangwenttoIndiatoresearchtheBuddhistdoctrinesin629AD,andthenhecamebackin645ADwithagreatdealofBuddhistscriptures.Inthetemple,hetranslatedlotsofchaptersoftheBuddhistscripturesintoChinese.InordertoprotecttheBuddhistScriptures,MonkXuanzangaskedforapagodatobebuilt.HedesignedthepagodalikeawildgooseashesawinIndia.SothispagodawascalledtheWildGoosePagodainmemoryofthefamousMonk.Itsfivestoreysare60metersinheight.Thedecayoftheearth-coredpagodacausedthenewconstructionofa10-storeypagodafrom701to704.Damagebythewarreducedittosevenstoreys,towhatitistoday.

Thestoryedpagodawasanarchitecturalmarvel.Itwasbuiltwithlayersofbricksbutwithoutanycementinbetween.ThebracketstyleintraditionalChinesearchitecturewasalsousedintheconstruction.Thegrandbodyofthepagodawithitssolemnappearance,simplestyleandhighstructure,isindeedagoodexampleofancientpeopleswisdomandtalent.WallsanddoorsarecarvedwithvividandexquisitefiguresofBuddha,reflectingtheprofundityinthepaintingsoftheTangDynasty.

IntheTangdynasty,everysuccessfulcandidatewhopassedtheimperialexaminationswouldhavetoclimbupDayanPagodaandwrotepoemsandinscriptionsthere.Thisritualwouldsymbolizeasoaringcareerinthefuture.ThefashionofwritingpoemsandleavinginscriptionsonthehorizontalbarsoverdoorsandstoneframeworksbysuccessfulcandidatesoftheimperialexaminationswentonasfarastheMingdynasty.Thesepoemsandinscriptionshavesurvivedtillthisdayasafinemirrortothecityspast.
