ofanyothersinglethingthatrepresentsmodemAmericaaspowerfully
asthecompanythatcreatedMickeyMouse.Globally,brandsIikeCoca-
ColaandMcDonaldsmaybemorewidely-known,butneitherencapsulates
20th-centuryAmericainquitethesamewayasDisney.
ThereasonsforDisney'ssuccessarcvariedandnumerous,but
u11imateIythecreditbeIongstooneperson-themanwhocreatedthe
cartoonandbuiltthecompanyfromnothing,WaltDisney.Ironically,he
couldnotdrawparticularlywell.ButbewasageniusinpIentyofother
respects,inbusiness,hisgreatestskillswerehisinsightandhis
managementabiIity.AftersettinghimselfupinHo11ywoodrhesingle
-handedIypioneeredtheconceptsofbrandingandmerchandising-

SomecelebratedAmericanachievements-Disney'sveryfirstcartoon
PlaneCrazy,featuringasiIentMiekeyHouse,wasinspiredbyCharles
Lindbergh1sfIightacorsstheAtIantic.Others,IiketheThreelittle
pigsandSnowWhiteandtheSevenDwarves,showedhow,throughhardwork
andhelpingonesfeIlowman,ordinaryAmericanscouldsurvivesociaI
andeconomiccrisesIiketheGreatDepression.
Disney,sothergreatvirtuewasthefactthathiscompany-unlike
otherbigcorporations-hadahumanface.HisHo11ywoodstudio-the
pubIicheard-operatedjustIikeademocracy,whereeveryonewason
first-nametermsandhadastayinhowthingsshouIdberun.Hewasalso
regardedasagreatpatriotbecausenotonlydidhiscartoonscelebrate
America,but,duringWorldWarIIvhisstudiosmadetrainingfilmsfor

Thereality,ofcourse,waslessidyllic.AsthepubIicwouldlater
learn,Disney,spatriotismhadanunpleasantside.Afterastrikeby
cartoonistsin1941,hebecameconvineedthatHo11ywoodhadbeen
infiItratedbyCommunists.HeagreedtoworkfortheFBIasamole,
identifyingandspyingonco11eagueswhomhesuspectedweresubversives.
But,apartfromhisaffiIiationswiththeFBI,DisneywasmoreorIess
thegenuinearticle.Anewbook,TheMagicKingdom:WaltDisneyandthe
AmericanWayofLife,byStevenWatts,confirmsthathewasvery
definiteIyonthesideofordinaryAmericans-inthe30sand40shevoted
forFranklinRovsevelt,believinghewasachampionoftheworkers.Also.
DisneywasnotanapoIogistfortheFBI,assomehavesuggested.Infact,
hewasaIwayssuspiciousoflarge,bureaucraticorganisatious,asis
evidencedinfiImsIikeThatDarnedCat,inwhichheportrayedFBIagents
asbungIingincompetents.
Bythetimehediedin1966,WaltDisneywasaniconIikeThomasEdison
andtheWrightBrothers.TobusinesspeopIeandfiImmakers,hewasarole
modeI;tothepubIicatlarge,hewas“UncleWalt"-themanwhohad

computerizedaialtomography(CTorCAT)scansalongwithcomparative
anatomystudies.Forsample,thetheorythatTriceratopsandsimilar
dinosaurspecieshadcheekswasbasedonpastcomparisonswithmammaIs
suchassheep.ButWitmer1scarefulanalysisfoundthestructureofthe
triceratopsjawandskulImadeitmorelikelythatTriceratopshadabeak
Iikethatofaneagle.Witmersaidthatscientistsshouldusebirdsand
crocodilesasmodeIswhenresearchingtheappearanceofdinosaurs.
InearlyOctoberscientistsannouncedthattheyhadconfirmedthe

ceratopsiansoriginatedinNorthAmericaandmigratedtoAsiaratherthan
thereverse,paleontologistssaid.DougWolfenamedtheimportantnew
speciesofdinosaurZuniceratopschristopheriafterhisson.
AnexpeditionfromtheUniversitiesofAlaskainAnchorageand
FairbankshasdiscoveredaregioninremotenorthernAlaskasorichin
fossiIizeddinosaurtracksthatteammembersdubbeditthe”dino
expresswayn.Thetrampledareawasfoundduringthesummerof1998on
Alaska'sNorthSlopeneartheBrooksRange.
Theteamfound13newtracksitesandmadecastsfromtheprintsof
fivedifferenttypesofdinosaurs.Therockinwhichtheprintswerefound
