Intheearlypartofhiscareer,AlfredHitchcockwaswidely

consideredtobeBritain'sbestfilmdirector.Hissilentfilmswere

greetedwithgreatenthusiasmbycritics,and,atatimeof

expansionandincreasingexcitementfortheBritishfilmindustry,

theywereevidencethatBritishfilmshadreachedaninternational

standard.In1929,HitchcockwashailedbyBritishcriticsforafilm

whichusedsoundanddialoguewithmoreimaginationthanany

HollywoodorEuropeanfilmofthetime.Andinthemid-1930s,

Hitchcock'sfilmsgaveenergytothefilmindustrywiththeirfast

paceandBritishsenseofhumor.

AftertheoutbreakoftheSecondWorldWartheBritishpresssaid

hehad"goneHollywood".Throughoutthe1940sand1950s,British

criticsfavoredrealismoverallelse,andtheylookeddownuponthe

HollywoodstylethatcharacterizedmuchofHitchcocksworkduring

thistime.

Inthe1960sand1970s,whencriticscelebratedHitchcock'sfilms,it

wasmainlytheHollywoodHitchcockthattheyadmired,andthese

(largelyAmericanandFrench)criticshadlittleinterestinhisBritish

films.OfcourseHitchcock'spubliccharacterinhislateryearswas

stillverycloselyassociatedwithhisEnglishbackground,ashis

appearancesontheAlfredHitchcockPresentstelevisionprograms

demonstrated.Buthisdarksuits,manners,andhumorseemedto

bethestyleofapersonoverseas.

Itcanbesurprising,then,todiscovertherespectthatHitchcock

enjoyedinhisnativecountryduringhisfirstdozenyearsasa

director.Whenoneofhisfilmswasfirstshownin1926,itwas

declaredtobeagreatpieceofartanditsdirectorwasproclaimed

tobeayounggenius.Hitchcockwasalreadytwenty-sevenyears

oldatthetime,buthisrisedidseemtohavebeenremarkable.

Hitchcock'sstartinfilms

HewasbornontheeasternedgeofLondon,inLeytonstone,

Essex,on13th,August,1899,andhisfamilylivedaboveashopon

LeytonstoneHighRoadandlaterintheEastEndneighborhoodof

PoplarandStepney.Heleftschoolattheageoffourteen,and

workedasaclerkattheHenleyTelegraph(電報)Companyand

tookeveninglessonsindrawingattheUniversityofLondon.In

1919,thisskillenabledhimtogetajobasatitlecarddesignerwith

theAmericanproductioncompanyFamousPlayers-Laskywhenit

beganmakingfilmsinaconvertedpowerstationinIslington.

TheAmericansdidnotstaylonginIslington,butHitchcock'srise

quickenedwhenthestudiowastakenoverbyMichaelBalcon's

GainsboroughPicturesin1924.BalconallowedHitchcocktowork

atdifferentjobsforGainsborough:asasetdesigner,writer,editor

andastheassistantdirectortoGrahamCutts,whowasthen

Gainsborough'stopdirector.

Theyoungdirector

In1925,Hitchcockwasgivenhisownassignments,ashedirected

twofilmsthatwerefilmedinMunich'sEmelkaStudiosaspartofa

dealbetweenGainsboroughandtheGermanproducerErich

Pommer.Neitherfilmattractedmuchattention,anditwasnotuntil

histhirdfilm,TheLodger(房客),thatboththecriticsandthepublic

tooknoticeofHitchcock.

Indeed,TheLodgerseemedabletopleasejustabouteveryone.It

hadtechniquesinformedbytheinternationalartcinemaofthe

1920s,anarrativeformborrowedfromHollywood,andanEnglish

subjectmatter.Itwasaremarkablecombinationandagreat

exampleoflatesilentcinema.TheLodgera\sointroducedseveral

ofHitchcock'smostenduringstoryelements:aherowhosevirtueis

indoubt,alovefilledwithsuspicion,humor,andaninterestin

beautifulwomen.Theseelementswouldendureformanyyears.

TheHitchcocktouch

DuringtheseearlyyearsHitchcockwasknownprimarilyforthe

visualcreativityofhisfilms.TheGermandirectorF.W.Murnauwas

astronginfluenceinthisregard.WhilefilminginGermanyin1924,

HitchcockvisitedMurnau.Itwasakeymomentinhisdevelopment

asafilmmaker.Murnau'sinterestinan"unchained"cameraandin

a"purecinema'*(tellingthestoryinvisualtermsalone)wouldbe

thelifelonginterestofHitchcock'stoo.Hewasalsoamemberof

theLondonFilmSociety,anditsscreeningofFrench,Germanand

Sovietartfilms,aswellasearlyandpioneeringAmericanfilms,

providedauniqueforumfortheconsiderationoffilmformand

technique,andonethatinfluencedHitchcockandmanyother

Britishfilmmakersofthetime.

OnecanfurtherpointtoHitchcock'sinterestindrawingasafactor

thatenrichedandenhancedthevisualdynamic(強度)ofhisfilms.

Inhissilentfilms,thiswassostrikingthatcriticsregularlydiscussed

"theHitchcocktouch",referringtothevisuallydramaticsequences

thatdistinguishedhiswork.Suchmomentsmightconveyan

amusing,darkorromanticstoryplot(故事情節(jié)),ortheymight

explainthemeaningofthestory,buttheyalwaysdemonstratedthe

director'sabilitytotellthestorywithoutrelyingondialoguesor

explanations.

Britain'sfinest

In1927HitchcockleftGainsboroughforthelargerBritish

InternationalPictures(BIP),andhisnewcontractmadehimthe

highestpaiddirectorinBritain.BeingassignedtodirectBIP'sfirst

talkingfilmwasanothersignofhisstatus,andthefilmprovedthat

suchregardwasfullydeserved.Atthetime,manypeople

interestedincinemathoughtthattheuseofspeechwouldreduce

cinematobeingonly"picturesofpeopletalking",butHitchcock's

inventiveuseofsounddemonstratedthatthenewtechnology

actuallyopenedanewworldofpossibilities.

ManyhavesaidthatHitchcockfoundhistruecallingwiththe1930s

thrillers,whileforothersthisconcentrationononetypeoffilm

representedalimitationofHitchcock'stalentsandinterests.Either

way,theirpopularityensuredthathewasinvitedtoHollywood,and

in1939hetookupacontractwiththeproducerDavidO.Selznick.

Thisopportunitymusthavelookedgreat.Inthelate1930s,the

Britishfilmindustryhadenteredafinancialcrisis,anditsdifficulties

wouldonlybecomelargerwiththestartofwar.Yetitisevidentthat

HitchcockwaseagertoholdontotieswithBritain.Hereturnedin

wartimetomaketwoshortfilmsfortheMinistryofInformation.

Intheimmediatepost-warperiod,heformedaproductioncompany

thatwasdesignedtoenablehimtomakefilmsinBritain,andtofree

himfromtheinterferenceofHollywoodproducerssuchasSelznick.

Ofthecompany'stwofilmsonlyonewasfilmedinBritain,and

althoughbotharerememberedfortheirboldexperimentationwith

longtakesanddeepfocus,neitherwasapopularsuccess.His

companysoonfolded,andHitchcocksubsequentlyworkedwitha

rangeofHollywoodstudios.

HemadeonlytwofurtherfilmsinBritain.Thefirstwasathrillerset

intheWestEndtheatreworldthathadexcitedhiminhisyouth,but

thefilm'ssenseoftimeandplacewasweakenedbyitsinternational

castanditscuriouslylimiteduseoflocationshooting.Thesecond,

shownin1972,seemedtohitmuchclosertohomeandcouldbe

seentorepresentaremakeofTheLodger.Thestorywascentered

onamanwhowaswronglybelievedtobeakillerofwomen,andit

wasfilmedwithalargelyBritishcastandinaLondonsetting,the

oldCoventGardenmarket.ThisisnotHitchcock'slastfilm,butit

canbeseenasarevisitingofhiscareer'sdramaticbeginningsin

Britainandasahomecomingforadirectorwhofoundhisgreatest

successandpopularityabroad.
