Wheneverwelosesomethingorsomebodywelove,itisimportantforustotaketimeoutforourselvesandtrulyfeeltheweightofwhatweareexperiencing.Althoughitmayseemthatdoingsowillpushusintoadeeperprocess,allowingustosortthroughtherangeofemotionsthatarepresentinoureverydayexistence.Eventhoughitmaysometimesseemeasiertoinvolveourselvesinactivitiesthastateofsadness,trulygivingourselvespermissiontobewithwhateverarisesactuallycreatesspaceforustobeginthehealingprocess.Thisisbecausetheactofgrievingisanaturalttakeourmindsoffofoursadness,thiswillonlymaketheroutetohealingmoredifficult.Unlesswelistentowhereweareinthemoment,theemotionsweexperiencewillonlygrowinintensity,andourfeelingswillmanifestthemselvesinmorepowerfulandlesscomfortableways.Onceweconsciouslyacknowledgethattheseemotionsarepresent,however,wearemoreabletosoothethesorrowofthemoment.Insodoing,webecomemoreopentoournaturalabilitytohealourselves.

WillingnessToFeel

situationthatfeelsabsolutelyblackandwhite.Butlifeisnotthisway梚t抯thewaywearelookingatourexperiencesthatiscausingtheturmoilwithinus.Whenwebecomeawarethatthestrugglewearehavingiswithourselves,wecanturnourattentiontothesourceinordertosolvetheproblem,butwemustbebeingTherearetimeswhenwemayfindourselvesstrugglingorevenfightingwithourthoughtsandemotions.Wemayfeelthatsomethingmustbedoneinacertainwayornotatall,ortheremaybesomeotherwillingtolookwhereweneedtoandfeelemotionsthatmaymakeusuncomfortableatfirst.Thenwecanchoosetoreallyopenourselvestounderstandingalltheoptionswecanimagine.Wearelikelytodiscoverthatweareresistingsomethingbasedonalimitedunderstanding,andwemustthenopenourselvestowillingness.

Openingourselvestowillingnessmayfeellikewearesurrenderingorabandoningallthatwebelieved.Butatthesametimeitisanactofpowerandcouragebecauseitisaconsciouschoicewemakeabouthowtoapplyourpersonalwill.Beingwillingistobeinastateofwillingsomethingintocreation.Itisatonceallowingourselvestobewhilealsochoosingtodirectourenergyinafocusedway.Itisbeinganddoingfromaplaceofopenness,wherewecanworkwiththeuniverseratherthanresistit.Itisanopenhandratherthanonethatisclenchedintoafist.Whenwemakeasteptowardwillingness,weopenourselvestotruth,possibility,andthemovementofthewiseuniverseinandthroughourlives.

105.WorthTheTime

MeditatingMoreWhenOurPlatesAreFull

Ironically,whenwegetbusy,thefirstthingthattendstogetcutbackisourmeditationpractice.Wehavelesstimeandalotonourplates,soitmakessensethatthishappens,butintheenditdoesn’treallyhelpus.Mostofusknowfromexperiencethatwefunctionmuchbetterwhenwegiveourselvestimeeachdaytositinsilence.Andthemorewehavetodo,themoreweneedthatsolitary,quiettimeforthedayahead.Asaresult,whileitmaysoundcounterintuitive,itisduringbusytimesthatwemostneedtospendmoretimeinmeditationratherthanless.Bybeingquietandlisteningtotheuniverse,wewillbegivenwhatweneedtogetthroughourday.

Expandingourmorningmeditationbyjust10minutescanmakeabigdifference,ascantheadditionofshortmeditationsintoourdailyschedule.Thetruthis,nomatterhowbusyweare,unlessweareinthemidstofacrisiswealwayshavefiveor10minutestospare.Thekeyisconvincingourselvesthatspendingthattimeinmeditationisthemostfruitfulchoice.Wecouldbegettingourdishesdoneorheadingintoworkearlierinstead,soit’simportantthatwecometovaluetheimportanceofmeditationinthecontextofalltheotherthingscompetingforattentioninourlives.Allwehavetodotodiscoverwhetheritworkstomeditatemorewhenwearebusyistotryit.

Wecanstartbycreatingmoretimeinthemorning,eitherbygettingupearlierorbypreparingbreakfastthenightbeforeandusingtheextratimeformeditation.Wecanalsoaddshortmeditationbreaksintoourschedule,fromfiveminutesbeforeorafterlunchtoameditationatnightbeforewegotosleep.Whenwecomefromaplaceofcenteredcalm,wearemoreeffectiveinhandlingourbusyschedulesandmoreabletokeepitallinperspective.Ifmoretimeinmeditationmeanslesstimefeelinganxious,panicky,andoverwhelmed,thenit’scertainlyworththeextratime.

106.AttitudeFollowsPerspective

ShiftingTheMood

Weallhavedayswhenwearefacedwithchores,errands,orresponsibilitiesthatwedon’twanttodo.Attimeslikethese,it’seasytogetintoabadmoodandstayinoneaswetacklethesetasks.However,giventhefactthatourbadmoodwillnotchangethefactthatwehavetodothesethings,andwillmostlikelymakethingsworse,wecouldalsotrytoshiftourattitude.Manywisepeoplehavepointedoutthatitisnotsomuchwhatwedoasitishowwedoitthatmakesthedifferenceinourlives.

It'simportantwhenwe'refacingsomethingthat'sreallyhardforus,whetherit'sdoingtaxes,payingbills,orvisitingachallengingrelative,thatwelovinglysupportourselvesthroughtheprocess.Themoresupportedwefeel,theeasieritistoopenourmindstotheideathatwecouldchangeourwayoflookingatthesituation.Intruth,mostofthechoreswedon'tlikedoingareintimatelyintertwinedwithourblessings.Whenwerememberthis,wefeelgratitude,whichmakesithardtostayinadarkmood.

Wecanshiftourattitudebyconsideringhowmuchweloveourhomeaswecleanitandhowluckywearetohavearoofoverourhead.Anytaskcanbetransformedfromaburdentoanecessaryaspectofcaringforsomethingwelove.Allwehavetodoisshiftourperspective,andourattitudefollowsshortlybehind.

107.EveryStepIsForward

NoGoingBack

Therearetimeswhenwefeelthatwearespinningourwheelsinthemudintermsofourspiritualprogress.Thiscanbeespeciallytruefollowingaperiodofmajorgrowthinwhichwefeelasifwe’vegainedalotofground.Infact,thisisthewaygrowthgoes—periodsofintenseforwardmovementgivewaytoperiodsofwhatseemslikestagnation.Inthosemomentswhenwefeeldiscouraged,it’shelpfultorememberthatwedon’teverreallygobackward.Itmaybethatweareatastandstillbecausethereisanewobstacleinourpaths,oranewlayertogetthrough,butthehardworkwehavedonecannotbeundone.

Everysteponthepathismeaningful,andevenonethatseemstotakeusbackwardisaforwardstepinthesensethatitiswhatwemustdotomovetothenextlevel.Inaddition,anintensegrowthspurtrequiresthatwerestforatimeinordertofullyintegratethenewenergiesthathavebeenliberatedbyourhardwork.Whenwefeelwearenotmakingprogress,wecanencourageourselvestotakeamomenttorest.Wecanmeditatemore,feedourselveswell,andgetextrasleep.Beforeweknowit,wewillbespurredontoworktowardthenextlevelofourdevelopment,andthisrestwillmakesensethenassomethingweneededinordertocontinue.

Oncethesunrises,itdoesn’tgobackwardbutinsteadfollowsitspathinonedirection.Itmayappeartostandstillforamomentintime,ortomovemoreslowlyatsomepointoranother,butreallyitissteadilymovingforwardonitspath.Wearethesameway,andoncewehavemovedthroughsomethingwecanneverreallygoback.Wemayberestingorrevisitingissuesthatseemold,andit’snaturaltofeelstuck,butintruthwearealwaystakingthenextimportantstepforwardonourpath.

108.GatheringOurStrayingThoughts

CenteringOurselves

Whenourthoughtsarescatteredinseveraldirectionsatonceandwearenolongerconsciousofwhatwearedoingorwhy,itistimetocenterourselves.Whenwecenterourselves,webeginbyacknowledgingthatwehavebecomespreadtoothinandwearenolongerunifiedinside.Ourthoughtsmightbeoutofsyncwithourfeelings,andouractionsmaybeoutofsyncwithboth.Themainsignsthatweneedtocenterourselvesarescatteredthoughtsandafeelingofdisconnectionornumbness,asifwearenolongerabletotakeanythingin.Inaddition,wemayfeelunfocusedandnotpresentinourbodies.Centeringourselvesisawayofcomingtotermswithallthedifferentenergieswithinusanddrawingthembackintoourselves.

Centeringyourselfmeansthatyouareworkingfromorbeingawareofthecoreofyourbeinginthesolarplexusareaofyourbody.Atfirstitmaynotmakesense,butasyouprogressyouwillunderstandwhatthisfeelslike.Wenaturallyknowhowtocenterourselveswhenwetakeadeepbreath,forexample,beforemakingabigannouncementordoingsomethingbig.Anotherwaytocenterourselvesistositdownandengageinbreathmeditation.Wecanstartbysimplygettingintoacomfortableuprightpositionandnoticingasourbreathentersandleavesourbodies.Ourbreathflowsintoourcenterandoutfromourcenter,andthisprocesscanserveasatemplateforallofourinteractionsintheworld.Inconversations,wecantakewhatourfriendsaresayingintothecenterofourbeingsandrespondfromthecenter.Ourwholelivesmirrorthisebbandflowofenergythatbeginsandendsatthecenterofourselves.Ifwefollowthisebbandflow,weareinharmonywiththeuniverse,andwhenwefindweareoutofharmony,wecanalwayscomebackintobalancebysittingdownandobservingourbreath.

Whenwesitdowntocenterourselveswecanimaginethatwearegatheringourstrayingthoughtsandenergiesbackintoourselves,thewayamotherduckgathersherbabiesaroundher.Wecanalsovisualizeourselvescastinganetandpullingallthedisparatepartsofourselvesbacktothecenterofourbeing,creatingasenseoffluidintegration.Fromthisplaceofcenteredness,wecanbeginagain,directingourselvesoutwardinamoreintentionalway.109.GrowingPains

DifficultTimes

Itcanbeverychallengingtomaintainapositiveattitudeandameasureoffaithwhenyouareinthemidstofdifficulttimes.Thisispartlybecausewetendtothinkthatiftheuniverselovesuswewillexperiencethatloveintheformofpositivecircumstances.However,wearelikechildren,andtheuniverseisourwisemotherwhoknowswhatoursoulsneedtothrivebetterthanwedo.Justasayoungchilddoesnotbenefitfromgettingeverythingshewants,wealsobenefitfromtimesofconstrictionanddifficultytohelpusgrowandlearn.Ifwekeepthisinmind,andcontinuetotrustthatwearelovedevenwhenthingsarehard,ithelpsusbearthedifficulttimewithgrace.

Thisperiodoftimeinhistoryisfullofdifficultyforalotofhumanbeings,andyoumayfeellessaloneknowingyouarenotbeingsingledout.Thereareextremeenergychangespulsingthroughtheuniverseateveryleveland,ofcourse,weareallpartofthegrowingprocessandthegrowingpains.Ithelpsifwerememberthatlifeisonephaseafteranotherandthatthisdifficulttimewillinevitablygivewaytosomethingnewanddifferent.Whenwefeeloverwhelmedwecancomfortourselveswiththewisesaying:Thistooshallpass.

Atthesametime,ifyoutrulyfeelthatnothingisgoingrightforyou,it’sneverabadideatoexamineyourlifeandseeiftherearesomechangesyoucanmaketoalleviatesomeofthedifficulty.Gentlyandcompassionatelyexploringtheareasgivingyouthemosttroublemayrevealthingsyouareholdingontoandneedtorelease:unprocessedemotions,unresolvedtransitions,ornegativewaysoflookingatyourselforreality.Asyoutakeresponsibilityforthethingsyoucanchange,youcanmoreeasilysurrendertothethingsyoucan’t,rememberingallthewhilethatthisphasewill,withoutdoubt,givewaytoanother.

110.TechnologyAsDistraction

ChoosingTrueConnections

Weareoftenluredbythepromiseofnewtechnologiestomakeourliveseasierandhelpconnectustoothers.Whiletheydosoinmanyways,theyalsopresenteachofuswithopportunitiestomakenewchoicesabouthowwespendourtimeandinvestourenergy.Mostgadgetsaregenerallymeanttoimprovethequalityofourlives,butitiswhenwespendtoomuchtimewiththemthattheyactuallydotheopposite.Byalwaysusingourportablee-mailers,cellphones,videogames,andsurfingtheInternet,weactuallybecomelessconnectedandmoredistracted.Bybecomingawareofthesetendencies,weharnessthepowertoovercomethemandmakebetterchoicesforourselvesandourfamilies.

Oncewedecidetoconsciouslyputourgadgetstoworkforus,webecomemastersofourtime.Wecangiveourfullattentiontowhateverwearedoingandnotletphoneconversationsandotherdistractionstaketheplaceofhumancontact.Eachofushastheabilitytoconsciouslychoosetobemorepresentinourlives.Wecandecideatanytimetoleaveourgadgetsbehindandbecomeawareofthesightsandsoundsaroundusinordertoexpandourawarenessandbefullypresentinourbodiesandoursurroundings.

111.CreateTimeForSelf-Compassion

BeingGentleWithOurselves

Duringthosetimeswhenourlivesarefilledwithwhatseemstobeconstantchangeandgrowth,itisimportanttorememberthatweneedtobegentlewithourselves.Sinceitcanbeeasytouseourenergytokeepupwiththemomentumofourlives,wemaynotbeawareofthefactthatwearemuchmorelikelytorunourselvesdown.Whenthingsseemtobemovingquickly,itisespeciallyessentialthatwemakeapointtoslowdownandbegentlewithourselves.

Itmightbedifficulttonoticewhatishappeningtousforwemaybesocaughtupinthewhirlwindofourlivesthatwelosesightofthedirectioninwhichthingsareheading.Beinggentlewithourselvesdoesn’tmeanthatwedon’taccomplishthings.Insteaditmeansthatwehonorourselvesonanongoingbasisandtakecareoftheneedsofourbodies.

Thismeansdifferentthingstodifferentpeople.Forinstance,itcouldmeanhavingasessionwithahealer;takingaremedy,herbs,orvitamins;orgettingextrasleep.Puttingourenergyintoourselvesinthiswayhelpscreatespaceforamorepositive,loving,andacceptingviewofourlives.Bysettingtheintentiontodoso,wewillbemorecognizantofourenergylevelsonadailybasisandmoreabletoreplenishthemasneeded.

Themoreweareabletotreatourbodieswithgentleness,themoretendernessandcompassionwewillcallforthintoourlives.Learningtounderstandandpayattentiontowhatourselfneedswillinturnallowustofillourliveswithunlimitedlovingandhealingenergyandtotrulytakecareofthethingsthatmeanthemosttous.112.NotAloneInTheDark

LookingAtWhatWeDon’tWantToSee

Itisoneoflife'sgreatparadoxesthatthethingswedon'twanttolookatinourselvesaretheverythingsweneedtolookatinordertoknowourselvesbetterandtobecomemorefullywhoweare.Thefeelingsthatmakeuswanttorunawayareburiedtreasurefullofenergyandinspirationifwearewillingtolook.Thesefeelingscomeinmanyforms,fromstrangeimagesorsnippetsofinformationtorecurringdreamsandfeelingsthatriseupseeminglywithoutareason.Whatevershapetheycomein,andnomatterhowscarytheyseem,thesemessengersbringtheinformationweneedinordertogrow.

Whenwearetiredofpushingsomethingdown,ortryingtorunawayfromit,agoodfirststepistowritedownwhatwethinkweareavoiding.Oftenthisturnsouttobeonlythesurfaceoftheissueorasymbolofsomethingelse.Expressingourselvesfullyonpaperisasafewaytobeginexploringthemurkyterritoryoftheunconscious.Thecoolnessoftheintellectcangiveusthedistanceweneedtoreadwhatwehavewrittenandfeellessafraidofit.Ithelpsifwerememberthatnomatterhowdarkornegativeourthoughtsorfeelingsmaybe,theseareenergiessharedbyallhumanity.Wearenotaloneinthedark,andallthegurusandteachersweadmirehadtogothroughtheirownunprocessedemotionalterritoryinordertocomeouttheothersidebrighterandwiser.Thiscangiveusthecourageweneedtoopenthetreasurechestofwhatwehavebeenavoiding.

Withinthepartsofourselvesthatwedon'twanttolookat,thereareemotionsthatneedtobefelt.Unfeltemotionsarestuckenergy,andwhenweleaveemotionsunprocessed,wedepriveourselvesofaccesstothatenergy.Whenwefeelstrongenough,wecanbegintheprocessoffeelingthoseemotions,onourownorwithguidancefromaspiritualcounselor.Itisthroughthisworkthattheburiedtreasureofenergyandinspirationwillpourforthfromourhearts,givingusthecouragetolookatallthepartsofourselveswithinsightandcompassion.

113.RepeatingPatternsOfMeaning

Numbers

Glancingattheclockmaycauseustolookagainsometimes,especiallywhenwenoticethatwe’vecaughtitatthesametimeoverandoveragain.Maybeweseethesamenumberpatternechoedeverywherewelook—whetheronlicenseplatesorappliances—overaperiodofhoursorevendays.Whenweacceptthattherearenocoincidences,weknowthereisamessageinthenumbersforus,andweknowtopayattentiontotherepeatingpatternsandsearchfortheirtruemeaning.
