Nevertheless,IassureyouthatinourdeliberationsonthatlovelyislandwesoughttoinvokethosesamegreatconceptsofuniversalpeaceandhumandignitywhicharesocleanlyetchedinyourCharter.Neitherwoulditbeameasureofthisgreatopportunitymerelytorecite,howeverhopefully,piousplatitudes.

Nineteenyearsago,almosttotheday,welostthreeastronautsinaterribleaccidentontheground.Butwe'veneverlostanastronautinflight.We'veneverhadatragedylikethis.Andperhapswe'veforgottenthecourageittookforthecrewoftheshuttle.Butthey,theChallengerSeven,wereawareofthedangers,butovercamethemanddidtheirjobsbrilliantly.Wemournsevenheroes:MichaelSmith,DickScobee,JudithResnik,RonaldMcNair,EllisonOnizuka,GregoryJarvis,andChristaMcAuliffe.Wemourntheirloasanationtogether.

AndIwanttosaysomethingtotheschoolchildrenofwhowerewatchingthelivecoverageoftheshuttle'stake-off.Iknowit'shardtounderstand,butsometimespainfulthingslikethishappen.It'sallpartoftheproceofe*plorationanddiscovery.It'sallpartoftakingachanceande*pandingman'shorizons.Thefuturedoesn'tbelongtothefainthearted;itbelongstothebrave.TheChallengercrewwaspullingusintothefuture,andwe'llcontinuetofollowthem.
