OliverTwist,oneofthemostfamousworksofCharlesDickens,isanovelreflectingthetragicfactofthelifeinBritainin18thcentury.

Theauthorwhohimselfwasborninapoorfamilywrotethisnovelinhistwentieswithaviewtorevealtheuglymasksofthosecruelcriminalsandtoe*posethehorrorandviolencehiddenunderneaththenarrowanddirtystreetsinLondon.

TheheroofthisnovelwasOliverTwist,anorphan,whowasthrownintoaworldfullofpovertyandcrime.Hesufferedenormouspain,suchashunger,thirst,beatingandabuse.Whilereadingthetragice*periencesofthelittleOliver,Iwasshockedbyhissufferings.Ifeltforthepoorboy,butatthesametimeIdetestedtheevilFaginandthebrutalBill.Tomyrelief,aswaswritteninallthebeststories,thegoodnesseventuallyconquereddevilandOliverlivedahappylifeintheend.Oneoftheplotsthatattractedmemostisthatafterthetheft,littleOliverwasallowedtorecoverinthekindcareofMrs.MaylieandRoseandbegananewlife.Hewentforwalkswiththem,orRosereadtohim,andheworkedhardathislessons.Hefeltasifhehadleftbehindforevertheworldofcrimeandhardshipandpoverty.

Howcansuchalittleboywhohadalreadysufferedoppressiveafflictionremainpureinbodyandmind?Thereasonisthenatureofgoodness.IthinkitisthemostimportantinformationimpliedinthenovelbyDickens-hebelievedthatgoodnesscouldconquereverydifficulty.AlthoughIdontthinkgoodnessisomnipotent,yetIdobelievethatthosewhoarekind-heartedlivemorehappilythanthosewhoareevil-minded.

Forme,thenatureofgoodnessisoneofthemostnecessarycharacterforaperson.Goodnessistohumanswhatwateristofish.Hewhoiswithoutgoodnessisanutterlyworthlessperson.Onthecontrary,asthefamoussayinggoes,Thefragrancealwaysstaysinthehandthatgivestherose,hewhoiswithgoodnessundoubtedlyisahappyandusefulperson.Peoplereceivinghishelparegratefultohimandhealsogetsgratifiedfromwhathehasdone,andthushecandogoodtoboththepeoplehehashelpedandhimself.

Tomydisappointment,nowadayssomepeopleseemtodoubtthee*istenceofthegoodnessinhumanity.Theylookdownonpeopleshonestyandkindness,thinkingitfoolishofpeopletobewarm-hearted.Asaresult,theyshownosympathytothosewhoareintroubleandseldomoffertohelpothers.Ontheotherhand,theyattachimportancetomoneyandbenefit.Intheiropinion,moneyistheonlyrealobjectwhileemotionsandmoralityarenihility.Iftheycannotgetprofitfromshowingtheirkindness,theydrawbackwhenothersarefacedwithtroubleandevenhitamanwhenheisdown.TheyareoneofthesortsthatIreallydetest.

FrancisBaconsaidinhisessay,Goodness,ofallvirtuesanddignitiesofthemind,isthegreatest,beingthecharacteroftheDeity,andwithoutit,manisabusy,mischievous,wretchedthing,nobetterthanakindofvermin.

Thatistosayapersonwithoutgoodnessisdestinedtoloseeverything.Therefore,I,akindperson,wanttotellthosevermin-to-betolearnfromthekindOliverandregainthenatureofgoodness.

Thisisastoryaboutaspecialandunreservedwomanwhohasbeene*posedtoahostileenvironmentbutcontinuouslyandfearlesslystrugglingforherideallife.Thestorycanbeinterpretedasasymboloftheindependentspirit.

Itseemstomethatmanyreaders’Englishreadinge*periencestartswithJaneEyer.Iamofnoe*ception.Aswerefertothemovie“JaneEyer”,itisnotsurprisingtofindsomedifferencesbecauseofitsbeingfilmizedandretoldinanewway,butthespiritofthenovelremainstobeanindependentperson,bothphysicallyandmentally.

JaneEyerwasabornresister,whoseparentswentoffwhenshewasveryyoung,andheraunt,theonlyrelativeshehad,treatedherasbadlyasaragtag.SinceJane’seducationinLowwoodOrphanagebegan,shedidn’tgetwhatshehadbeene*pecting——simplybeingregardedasacommonperson,justthesameasanyothergirlaround.ThesuffersfrombeinghumiliatedanddevastatedteachJanetobeperseveringandprizedignityoveranythingelse.Asarewardofrevoltingtheruthleoppression,JanegotachancetobeatutorinThornfieldGarden.

ThereshemadetheacquaintanceoflovelyAdeleandthatgarden’sowner,Rochester,amanwithwarmheartdespiteacoldfaceoutside.Janee*pectedtochangethelifefromthenon,butfatehaddecidedotherwise:AfterJaneandRochesterfellinlovewitheachotherandgotdowntogetmarry,sheunfortunatelycametoknowinfactRochesterhadgotalegalwife,whoseemedtobetheshadowfollowingRochesterandledtohismoodineallthetimeRochesterwasalsoadespairingpersoninneedofsalvation.Janedidwanttogivehimahand,however,shemadeuphermindtoleave,becauseshedidn’twanttobetrayherownprinciples,becauseshewasJaneEyer.Thefilmhasfinallygotasymbolistend:Janeinheritedalargenumberoflegaciesandfinallyreturned.AfterfindingRochester’smisfortunebroughtbyhisoriginalmadwife,Janechosetostaywithhimforever.

Idon’tknowwhatothersfeel,butfranklyspeaking,IwouldratherregardthesectionthatJanebeganherteachingjobinThornfieldasthefilm’sendespeciallywhenIheardJane’swords“NeverinmylifehaveIbeenawakensohappily.”Foronething,thisidealandbrand-newbeginningoflifewaswhatJanehadbeenimaginingforlongasasufferingperson;foranother,thisshouldbewhattheaudienceswithmyviewshopedhertoget.Buttheprofessionaljudgmentofproducingfilmsremindedmetowaitforatotallydifferentresult:Theremustbesomethingwrongcomingwiththee*cellenceperhapsnotonlyshouldanothersectionbeaddedtoenrichthestory,butalsowemayseefromthene*ttransitionofJane’slifethat“Lifeislikeabo*ofchocolates,youneverknowwhatyouwouldget.”(ByForrestGump’smother,inthefilm“ForrestGump”)
