formyparents,plansforourfutureswereverysimple.weweretogetgoodgrades,gotogoodcolleges,andbecomegoodscientists,mathematicians,orengineers.ithadtodowithbeingchinese.butmysistersandirejectedthatfuture,andtheyearicamehomewithhonorsinenglish,historyanddebatewasayearofdisillusionformyparents.itwasnotthattheyweren’tproudofmyaccomplishments,butmerelythattheyhadcertainideasofwhatwassafeandsolid,whatwedidinlife.physics,math,turninginhomework,andcrossingthestreetwhenharekrishnaswereonourside—thosethingsweresafe.butthehumanitiesweleftforpureamericans.

unfortunatelyformyparents,however,thesecurityofthatworldissimplynotenoughforme,andihavescaredthemmorethanoncewithwhattheycallmy“wild”treksintounfamiliarareas.ispentoneafternooninterviewingtheharekrishnasforourschoolnewspaper—andtheynearlycalledthepolice.then,tomakethingsworse,idecidedtoenterthecrystalspringsdramacontest.formyparents,actingwassomethingchinesegirlsdidnotdo.itsmackedofthebohemian,andwasbutashortsteptodrugs,debauchery,andallthedark,illicitfacetsoflife.theyneverdidapproveoftheexperience—evendespitemysecondplaceatcrystalspringsandmyassurancesthatactingwas,afterall,nomorethanawhim.
