NewYear’sDayhasbeencelebratedforthousandsofyearsindifferentculturesaroundtheworld.TheearliestrecordedcelebrationsofthedaycanbetracedbacktoancientBabylon,wherethefirstofJanuarywasobservedasareligiousfestivaltohonorthegodMarduk.TheRomansalsocelebratedtheday,whichtheycalledtheCalendsofJanuary,withfeastingandgift-giving.

In1582,PopeGregoryXIIIintroducedtheGregoriancalendar,whichreplacedtheJuliancalendar.ThenewcalendardesignatedJanuary1stasthefirstdayoftheyear,andmostChristiannationsembracedthischange.However,manyculturesstillcelebrateNewYear’sDayaccordingtotheirtraditionalcalendars.

InChina,theLunarNewYeariscelebratedonadifferentdateeachyear,usuallybetweenlateJanuaryandmid-February.ThedayisalsoknownastheSpringFestival,anditisthebiggestholidayoftheyearinChina.Thecelebrationslastfor15daysandincludefamilygatherings,feasting,andfireworks.

InScotland,NewYear’sDayisknownasHogmanay,anditiscelebratedwithtraditionalScottishcustomslikedancing,singing,andtheexchangeofgifts.ThefirstpersontoenterahomeonNewYear’sDayisknownasthefirst-footandisthoughttobringgoodluckforthecomingyear.
