Thoughsugarydrinksareeverywhere,somepeoplefindthemhardertoresistandthefirststudy,conductedbyprofessorJoshuaMcGreenatFlindersUniversity,soughttounderstandwhy.Fortheresearch,128youngadultsof17to25completedacomputertestevaluatingtheirattitudesaboutsoftdrinks,measuredagainsttheirsoftdrinkconsumption.Thestudyshowedthatthemoreunconsciouspositivejudgmentsindividualshadofsoftdrinkadvertising,themoresoftdrinktheyconsumed.Italsofoundthatalackofinhibitorycontrol,whichisthecognitiveprocessthatallowsustocontrolourdesires—say,tobuyanice—tastingsoftdrinkeventhoughweknowit’sunhealthy—wasalsoafactorinincreasedconsumption.
Asecondstudyprovidescluesaboutwhoismoreeasilyinfluencedbythemarketingstrategies.Thestudyfoundthatsoftdrinkcompanies,likeCoca-ColaandPepsiCo,havemulti-billiondollaradvertisingandmarketingbudgetsaimedto“create,maintainandincreaseconsumerdemandaroundbenefitsrelatedtohappiness,socialstatusetc.”.Thesecampaignsare“increasinglybeingdirectedatdisadvantagedgroups”,includingchildrenandadolescentsgenerally,andpeoplelivingindisadvantagedneighborhoods.
