Sleepinertia(慣性)isanothertermforgrogginess.Itmeansapersonhasaheavyfeelingwhenwakingup,andhastroublegettingmovingagainaftersleeping.McFarlanesaidpeopleneedtobetterunderstandsleepinertia’sharmfuleffectsonhumanperformancelaterintheday.
Noteveryonewillexperiencethefulleffect.Butforthosewhodo,“careshouldbetaken”whenperformingdutiesthatrequireatopperformancewithinthisperiod,hesaid.Thisincludes“dangeroustaskslikedrivingorridingourbikes”shortlyafterwakingup.Thesameistrueforpeoplewhoworkindangeroussituationsshortlyaftertheywake,includingfirefightersandpilots.
